Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann, alongside key media journalist Deitsch, takes a look at yesterday's departure of Fox Sports Prez Horowitz with allegations swirling of a sexual harassment investigation. Breach of contract & defamation angles explored. Also, "Still, Fox and Horowitz might be motivated to resolve any legal differences out of court, such as through private mediation. Both sides may have concerns about the possibility of damaging disclosures—whether in emails or in witness testimonies—that could become public during litigation. For good or bad, a lawsuit is a public way of resolving a disagreement and thus poses reputational risks to all involved." (link)
Louisiana Monroe Prez Bruno back on the wire with comments on his AD search, "Well, the [Athletic Director search] is going to crank off this week. And, look at it, there are some reports there's a favorite candidate, which is false. As the president would say, 'fake news.' It was not accurate. We do have some good candidates coming in and I would hope, at least, we can offer that position sometime next week, sometime after the holidays." (link)
USC Upstate will officially introduce new AD Freire on Thursday morning. Chancellor Kelly: "This is an exciting day for the future of Spartans Athletics. I’m excited for the opportunity to work with Julio. He brings a tremendous amount of energy, experience in Division I intercollegiate athletics and the vision needed to further advance our athletics programs. He also truly understands the lasting value of college athletics in preparing young people to experience success in competition, in the classroom and most importantly in life." Freire says he's "honored" and "impressed by the people & community." (link)
Looks like there's more competition coming for the FB search firm landscape as SportSource Analytics is promoting the addition of former longtime NFL executive Lombardi as part of its organization. "With Michael on our team, we can bring a unique prospective of truly understanding the four characteristics of leadership and how they look in action. Having worked for some of the greatest coaches in sports, Michael Lombardi will assist in finding the right leader for your program as well as helping the university prepare for the most important part of the process - the interview." $45K is the price point to have Lombardi involved in a search to go along with access to SSA's platform & Coach Analysis Evaluations. (link)
New Cal Chancellor Christ says her athletic department will have a balanced budget by 2020, "I think it’s corrosive for any unit to exist with a deficit that the campus ignores for decades." Christ goes on to indicate an external entity will take a look at fiscal operations of the Golden Bears with an eye on maximizing revenue opportunities. Further, "I don’t think that there are going to be decisions made this summer about reducing the size and scope of the athletics program and there are a lot of prior decisions that need to be made before we get to that one […] You either have to rebudget the unit so that they’re working within a realistic budget or you have to increase revenues or reduce expenditures so that the budget is balanced." (link)
Sports Illustrated's Staples writes on the NCAA working group that is rethinking transfer regulations. "The members of the working group have dared their colleagues to try to stop a new package of transfer rules that would strip power from the coaches to use the scholarship as a weapon to keep players trapped at their school or keep them away from a school that might eventually beat them on the field. […] The working group also suggested that perhaps penalties should be stronger for coaches caught attempting to recruit players from other schools before those players receive permission to be contacted. That might help curb tampering more than the current system in which coaches simply block the player from transferring on scholarship if they even suspect another school got in touch too early." Ultimately, Staples believes undergrads should have to sit a year, but cannot be blocked from transferring to any institution. Graduates, on the other hand, should receive a one-time exception to transfer, but could get scholarships revoked after graduation. (link)
Few schools have had as much early success in a new league as Western Kentucky in Conference USA. Toppers AD Stewart: "We knew that we needed to get off to a good start. Now you fast forward three years later and we’ve actually led the conference in conference championships each of the three years we’ve been in the league. We won eight the first year, six the second year, seven this year. Obviously, the 21 over three years is the most. [...] not only do we have 21 (championships), but the next closest school has 10." And, one of WKU's most traditionally strong programs, MBB, has been a laggard, which Stewart believes is changing under HC Stansbury. (link)
From HBR: Bain & Company partner Garton points to company research that shows one single characteristic as most important for inspirational leadership: centeredness. "This is a state of mindfulness that enables leaders to remain calm under stress, empathize, listen deeply, and remain present." Additional qualities of note for inspirational leaders: a) Your key strength has to match how your organization creates value ("For example, an organization that makes its money out-marketing the competition isn’t likely to be inspired by a leader whose best talent is cost management."); and, b) You have to behave differently if you want your employees to do so (“We found that leaders who both inspire people and generate results find ways to constructively disrupt established behaviors to help employees break out of culture-weakening routines.”) More. (link)

UCLA will host both Real Madrid & Manchester United for training this summer as each club commences a U.S. pre-season tour. LA2024 chairman Wasserman, also a major Bruins donor, points to UCLA's facilities as a major advantage for Olympics integration when the time comes. (link); Sticking with the Bruins, you can be sure MBB is leveraging this on social media: Kanye West & 2 Chainz stopped by to work out with the team yesterday. (link); Lastly, here's a FB hype video promoting the new UCLA-Under Armour relationship. (link)

ESPN's Hale says Clemson & Cal are leading the way with career preparations for student-athletes. Tigers' Asst. AD for Football Player Relations Davis has a sign above his door in the new complex that reads, "The House of Truth." Davis' playing career gives him immediate credibility with Tiger student-athletes & he leads a team of three "dedicated exclusively to providing off-field experiences to the football team." Director of Career & Professional Development Waymyers, who left a job in nuclear procurement to join CU, "I've had players leave this office crying, giving me high-fives, hugs, lifting me off my feet because they got the interview of a lifetime." In Berkeley, Director of Player Development Coccimiglio leads the charge & gets the attention of freshmen student-athletes early during their time on campus by sitting them all down & showing social media posts from those in the room, "I feel a little bad, but it's actually quite amusing what some of these young kids are doing." Leveraging a deep roster of notable leaders with Golden Bear ties is a key ingredient for Coccimiglio. Lots more. (link)
Duquesne AD Harper believes his MBB program is aligned well under new HC Dambrot & the "three Cs." Conference: The A-10 commonly sends multiple bids to the NCAA Tourney, "There is a platform for success that if you do well in the conference, you can get into meaningful postseason play." Commitment: "We have reallocated resources. We added resources to do so. We're resourcing now with the ability to compete at the top of the conference." And, of course, Coaching. Harper also says the $42M facilities fundraising push by the Dukes is nearly complete. (link)
Florida Gulf Coast's upgrades to Alico Arena should be complete within a month's time & this piece has a number of pictures of the progress. Eagles AD Kavanagh: "The larger area (throughout the expansion) gives us the opportunity to serve more student-athletes on a daily basis and in a much better fashion." (link); The transformation of Maryland's Cole Fieldhouse from legendary hoops arena to FB practice facility is coming along nicely. The Terps are over the $100M mark in a push to raise $155M for complete venue renovations. Live shot of the construction shows turf being laid inside Cole. (link)
DePaul AD Lenti Ponsetto promotes Asst. Director of Academic Advising Hollembeak to Senior Assoc. AD/SWA for the Blue Demons. Lenti Ponsetto: "Her strong skills as an outstanding administrator, collaborator and decision maker along with her experience as a highly successful coach and accomplished world-class athlete covers every dimension of what DePaul athletics requires to move our programs to the next level." Prior to joining DePaul in 2005, Hollembeak was an administrator at Illinois State & earlier led the highly-successful Women's Gymnastics program. (link)
Michigan State AD Hollis turns to Valparaiso Senior Assoc. AD for Finance & Administration Anthony as the new Assoc. AD for Sport Management in East Lansing. Anthony will report up through Spartans Executive Assoc. AD Applebaum. Anthony spent the last 19 years with the Crusaders, including a 10-year stretch from 1998 to 2008 as the Women's Soccer HC. (link)
If today's holiday allows you catch-up on some learning, AthleticDirectorU posted a conversation with Big East Commish Ackerman from the NCAA Convention in Nashville from earlier this year. Ackerman reviewed how her team keeps different constituency groups appraised of developments within the league, how decisions are made well before all parties sit down for conference meetings, how she handles disagreements within the leadership group & lots more. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
On his podcast, Georgia Tech AD Stansbury confirmed that the school is negotiating with Adidas, Nike and Under Armour with a decision being made "the sooner, the better." Thinks Tech's international reputation, its innovation/corporate community and its location in Atlanta are positives for any potential partner, but that the three companies each have different positives to contribute on their ends, so long as the chosen one "reinforces the brand," he will be happy. Anticipates more apparel availability for fans. More notes from his latest pod from the AJC's Sugiura. (link)
South Carolina AD Tanner, who took over in Columbia in 2012, didn't have a high-profile HC search in his first three years as he promoted then-AC Holbrook to HC for Baseball. 24/7 Sports analyzes his FB and Baseball hirings since, with both following a similar script: 1. Target the best possible coach initially; 2. Go with your gut and culture fit if it's not going to work out with the best possible coach (i.e. former Houston FB HC Herman and Florida Baseball HC O'Sullivan). "South Carolina has never, ever finessed its way to anything when it comes to success in athletics. It’s always been about toughness here. Tanner didn’t win any sort of perception prize in conducting these two searches and gut calls sometimes work and sometimes do not work ... Should Muschamp and Kingston both work out in major ways, the narrative on Tanner’s 'gut' as an athletic director will quickly go from being met with skepticism to being met with respect and praise. The great hiring athletics directors across the country- [Florida's] Foley, Louisville’s Tom Jurich and others, all have earned that respect for their gut through years of making hires that worked out. At the very least, Tanner has made hires based on what has worked at Carolina in the past and now has the foundation of that previous success across the board in the four major sports culturally." A bit more. (link)
Penn State has sued former FB DC Shoop, who currently holds the same role at Tennessee, for $900K stemming from an unpaid buyout ($891,856 to be exact). Yesterday, the case was moved to the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Back when the Vols hired Shoop, former UT AD Hart made it clear Shoop was taking responsibility for his own buyout, "(I)t’s a very, very loud statement about how bad Bob wanted to be a part of what is going on here in our football program." The filing from PSU says Shoop has not made any payment & has indicated he does not intend to do so. (link)
The Seattle Times profiles Washington MBB HC Hopkins, who was hired 104 (but who is counting) days ago and already "flexed his east-coast muscle" and compiled a top-20 recruiting class, as well as retained many current Huskies. "Still, the difference between captain and first mate is monumental in the coaching world. That 18-inch slide to the head coach’s chair has made idiots out of previously brilliant assistants. So we’ll have to wait and see. Make no mistake: This is a rebuild. It’s going to take time. The first couple years probably won’t likely be drawing too much applause. These first hundred days, on the other hand? I think you have to give Hopkins a hand." (link)
Entrepreneur of the Year awarded Learfield Prez & CEO Brown as its 2017 winner from the Southwest region in the Technology & Media Services category. Brown says it's a reflection of the people within his company & the quality campus relationships built over the years. With the 'W' Brown's firm now advances to national-level competition to be decided in November in Palm Springs. "The awards are the culminating event of the Strategic Growth ForumTM, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies." (link)
Also Noticed: Samford MBB HC Padgett gets a five-year extension that could keep him in Birmingham through the 2021-22 season. (link); Richmond Men's Tennis HC Johnson steps-down after seven years of leading the Spiders, including the most recent that saw his squad reel off a record-setting 25-4 record. (link); Full chart of price points for Ohio State FB games this season. (link); ESPN's Shulman won't decrease his college hoops schedule, but has decided that this will be his last season anchoring the network's live MLB coverage. (link); SI quickly hires college FB journalist Feldman, who will continue to be in front of the camera this year for Fox & Fox Sports. (link); Given FB's new mantra under HC Fleck, Minnesota had fans decorate their own oars & bring them to this year's spring game. Now comes the taks of installing all the oars in TCF Bank Stadium. Here's a pic. (link)
Given the success of Western Kentucky in Conference USA, noted above, a couple of months back Hilltoppers AD Todd Stewart rapped on the topics of HC hiring strategies, communication within hiring processes, feedback for those not chosen for a job, as well as how he handles a current WKU HC who may be in the running for a step up the food chain. Listen: Part I (link). Part II (link).
