Ask a Traffic Engineer
Q. Why doesn't the flashing yellow light work on northbound Wadsworth turning west onto 20th Avenue? The signal was updated with a yellow flashing arrow and it USED to flash yellow. It even has a sign indicating that you can turn on the flashing yellow, but it doesn't flash.

A. You are right. The flashing yellow arrow used to come on throughout the day at 20th Avenue and Wadsworth. However, due to numerous crashes at that intersection, we had to make an adjustment. Drivers were misjudging the gap between cars and crashing while attempting to make a left turn. These crashes were endangering drivers' safety and increasing other commuters' travel time.
The left turn flashing arrow does not operate at several intersections (about a dozen) throughout the city from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. During this time drivers making a left turn will get a protected green arrow.
Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., both directions flash due to lighter traffic conditions. On weekends, the schedule for the flashing yellow arrow varies by intersection depending on the traffic volume.
The new flashing yellow arrow turn signals are popular; however, they can only be used in certain scenarios and traffic engineers must strive to balance roadway efficiency with the safety of drivers.
Hopefully, this information helps explain how the flashing yellow arrow is used in Lakewood.
