Predict when your hard drive will fail

There's technology built into most hard drives that can warn you of imminent failure. In this article I show you how to find the information, and explain what it means so you can make an educated decision about the future of your computer.

How old is that computer? When should I replace it?

Here I give the answers to a couple of the most common questions I get. Spoiler alert: it's subjective! But again, I try to arm you with the best information so you can make an informed decision.

Tech Tip

If your computer is still running Windows Vista, it's time to upgrade to a new system. Microsoft's support for Vista has ended, so that operating system will only become less secure over time. Hackers will find ways to exploit the OS, and Microsoft won't patch any of the holes they find. The same thing happened to Windows XP users a couple years ago. Please replace your computer if you have either XP or Vista.

If you don't know whether you have Vista or not, here's a way to find out. On your keyboard, hold down the Windows key (looks like four wavy boxes) and on the other side of the keyboard towards the top, tap the "Pause|Break" key (if you have one). Alternatively, you can open any folder on your computer, and on the left where it lists things like "Desktop" and "Documents," right-click on "Computer" and then left-click on "properties."
