Our Best in Children’s Books – Capitalising on the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults

by Stella Chrysostomou

The New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults are our premier awards for children’s books. The shortlist was announced on June 7 and there are some excellent finalists this year. With plenty of social media and an eye-catching design for this year’s Awards, it’s time to get behind the best in New Zealand children’s titles.

To find out what’s happening on the ground and why these Awards are important to booksellers, Stella Chrysostomou from the Book Awards Trust and VOLUME talked to Jemma Pirrie, Manager at McLeods Booksellers, John Vallely of Paper Plus Lower Hutt, Children’s Book Specialist Charlotte Molloy at UBS Otago and Helen and Mary Wadsworth, owners of Dorothy Butler Children’s Bookshop in Ponsonby. Read on.

The NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults shortlists were announced recently. Here are our reviews of the finalists for the Picture Book category. NB: All reviews of these books written by Sarah Forster were written prior to her selection as a judge for the awards.

Fuzzy Doodle, by Melinda Szymanik, illustrated by Donovan Bixley (Scholastic NZ)
'From the first squiggle to the final page, Fuzzy the doodle leads you on a playful word adventure as he grows…and grows…and grows.'

Gwendolyn! by Juliette MacIver, illustrated by Terri Rose Baynton, (HarperCollins Publishers)
'I think it will delight children and adults alike and become a treasured favourite. It’s a great tale about friendship and how we don’t have to be the same to get along.'

My Grandpa is a Dinosaur, by Richard Fairgray and Terry Jones, illustrated by Richard Fairgray (Penguin Random House)
'A brilliant message, and a brilliantly well-executed book. And most importantly, a lot of fun.'

That’s Not a Hippopotamus! by Juliette MacIver, illustrated by Sarah Davis (Gecko Press)
'It would make a perfect introduction to a study of wildlife (the notion of big, small, colourful are all explored), or a book to hype the class up for an outing to the zoo.'

The Singing Dolphin/Te Aihe i Waiata, by Mere Whaanga (Scholastic NZ)
'The lyrical text and rich illustrations draw you into the tale and invoke familiar legends and songs; so much so that in your head you can hear strong kuia calling, and stirring waiata mixing with sounds of the forest and shore.'
