BLACK MAGIC DISCO:
TOM TRAGO
FRI 30 JUN
Rush Hour Records’ Tom Trago heads up Black Magic Disco tonight to get us all back in the mood for disco to the small hours. With three critically acclaimed albums under his belt at Rush Hour and his own Voyage Direct label, Trago’s reputation as a world-renowned DJ and producer is well earned. He’ll be joined by Canada’s The Mole, who is a stalwart in the house scene and a welcome newcomer to BMD’s disco flex. To top it off? Fellow Canadian Dane comes with a sterling reputation from his label Common Edits. He’s spent the last few years leading a house and disco resurgence in Western Canada so we’re expecting a whole lot of rare edits and barely-heard cuts.

WILL HEARD
TUE 12 SEP
Will Heard’s been on our radar for some time, and the London singer is now headlining his own show here on 12th September. Having played sax from the age of ten, he’s spent the past few years honing his own take on soulful, jazz-infused vocals. Fans of previous VU headliners Jorja Smith and Samm Henshaw should listen up.

FLOORPLAN
SAT 5 AUG
Superstition returns for this summer edition with father-daughter duo Robert Hood and Lyric as Floorplan on 5th August. Disco and gospel-infused house and techno rule the roost chez Hood, and we’re more than ready for that party to swing into town. Joining them for another Superstition-sized line-up will be Berghain resident Efdemin and Planet Rhythm affiliate Jamie Haus.

CLS: MODERN MYSTICS - THE BOOK OF HOURS
WED 22 NOV
City of London Sinfonia brings a sonic trilogy to VU this autumn. Modern Mystics is one of three linked concerts exploring belief, faith and our common human experience. On 22nd November, our warehouse will be transformed into a theatre for sound, where the audience will settle into a cushion or informally stand, within touching distance of the CLS musicians. They’ll be exploring music as a timeless force, linking the modern day to forgotten eras, combining live orchestra, recordings and lighting.

VESSELS
WED 4 OCT
Vessels return to Village Underground this year with Deflect the Light, the latest track to be taken from the Leeds-based five piece’s upcoming album The Great Distraction. And the boys aren’t messing about. For the lead single, they’ve teamed up with the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne to supply some crystalline synths against whirring drum beats. Read more about the collaboration here.

FOREST SWORDS
WED 18 OCT
New album Compassion is currently earning Forest Swords’ Matthew Barnes all sorts of well-deserved praise. We like how The Line of Best Fit sums it up: “[Matthew Barne’s] obsession with both ancient sounds and computer-generated music results in a haunting kind of gothic dub that is all the more spellbinding when experienced live”.

LTJ Bukem will be here on 20th October with Dynamite MC and another special guest- whether it’s your first time or your first of countless times, you’re not going to want to miss it.

CHRISTIAN LÖFFLER
TUE 31 OCT
As a youngster Christian Löffler started programming and arranging music on his computer for his ears alone - he created sound banks of field recordings and taught himself instruments because he wanted to hear them. That was until a close friend Steffen Kirchhoff approached him to start a label and together they founded Ki Records. His second album Mare returns to an organic approach, reminiscent of the days of self-recorded instruments from his childhood. Catch him here, performing with Mohna at the end of October.

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW
MON 24 JUL +
TUE 25 JUL
Fun fact! James Vincent McMorrow is playing as many dates here as he has names, and Wednesday 26th already sold out. That leaves you with the two glorious summer night options with JVM in residence here. For each show, James will be playing one whole set of True Care in full, and then a set spanning his career to date. Just picture it - temperatures rising on the streets of Shoreditch and JVM playing you into the week.
