UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD 2017 awarded to winners from Jordan, UK and Zimbabwe

The three winners of this year’s UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) were awarded at a ceremony in November. They are: the social enterprise Zikra from Jordan, the Hard Rain Project from the United Kingdom and Sihlengeni Primary School from Zimbabwe. More >>


At COP23, UNESCO advocates for climate change education
The UN climate conference (COP23), which started in Bonn, Germany this Monday, will dedicate an entire thematic day to education on Thursday, 16 November. UNESCO will organize a series of discussions and roundtables highlighting the central role of ESD in climate responses throughout the day. More >>

UN General Assembly discusses findings from UNESCO’s ESD report

A new project aims to improve the development of policies to further ESD in Central American countries, in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Primary school in Zimbabwe creates ‘green oasis’ for teachers, students and community
A "whole-institution" approach to sustainable development has turned a primary school in an arid stretch of Zimbabwe into an oasis with a rehabilitated forest, fruit trees, nutrition garden and livestock. Its permaculture programme has improved the local environment while generating income for community members.  More >>
Launch of guide to embed ESD in textbooks
The UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development has launched a guidebook on embedding concepts of sustainability in school manuals for core subjects: "Textbooks for Sustainable Development: A Guide to Embedding". It offers concrete guidance for authors of mathematics, science, language and geography textbooks on how to "embed" peace, sustainable development and global citizenship in textbook content. More >>

Sustainability begins with teachers: workshop in Central Asia held
In the framework of the UNESCO Global Action Programme on ESD (GAP), Almaty hosted a workshop for teacher educators of Central Asian countries. The workshop introduced a new methodology whereby each participating institution conducted a self-assessment on ESD and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) beforehand. During the workshop, participants explored a variety of methods and approaches and subsequently developed action plans for teacher education and training systems in the region. More >>   
Sustainable Development Goals reach children's audience
How to talk about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with children? UNESCO Brazil and Ministries of Education and the Environment have created a series of videos addressing 9 of the 17 SDGs which help teachers talk about sustainable development in primary schools. In each video, children themselves explain the SDG. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of ESD. More >>   

Raising future leaders’ awareness with dazzling mix of arts and science

Featuring world-class photo exhibitions, a film, books, a documentary talk and educational materials, the UK-based organization brings together art and science to engage audiences, particularly young people as the leaders of tomorrow, in dealing with the challenges around sustainable development. Arab youth participate in ESD Leadership Training
The two-day GAP training programme for youth leaders has a double objective: empower young people to inspire and mobilize others to take action towards building more sustainable communities; and build a youth-led ESD network for exchange and collaboration. It is being implemented in all world regions throughout 2017. The workshop for the Arab region was held in Beirut in August, for 41 participants from 17 countries. More >>
Youth in Latin America and Caribbean train to be ESD key players
The regional GAP youth leadership training for Latin America and the Caribbean took place in Brazil in September. The 44 participants from 13 countries engaged in interactive discussions on varied SDG topics. Skills addressed included systems thinking, leadership, conflict solving, networking and community visioning. More >>

Zikra boosts and empowers marginalized communities in Jordan
“We have so much to learn about sustainability from local knowledge ” says Lama Khatieb, co-founder of Zikra for Popular Learning. The social enterprise empowers community members to revalue their identity and culture, through the cultivation and sharing of their local knowledge in relation to sustainable solutions.  More >>
Okayama City: a sustainable revolution put into practice
Okayama City, famed in Japan for its high quality of living, has another claim. It is a world leader in ESD, which is implemented through a ‘whole-city’ approach involving the government, schools, corporations, NGOs and more than 260 groups of citizens of all ages. The key to success is that all learning is reinforced with practical application.   More >>

Test shows how aware students are about SDG challenges
The Sustainable Literacy Test evaluates knowledge about the SDGs among students in higher education. The findings of its 2017 report emphasize a relative homogeneity in the level of awareness about the 17 SDGs, even if significant differences are identified with average scores of expected correct answers ranging from 34% to 67%. Eastern Africa workshop on how to embed SDG 4.7 in national policy
In the framework of the 2030 Education Agenda, the UNESCO Nairobi organized a regional technical workshop under the umbrella of ESD and global citizenship education (GCED) to support member states unpacking SDG 4.7 in their national policies and practices. More >>
Youth ready and willing to act for SDG 4 on Quality Education
How can we engage youth? The YouthSpeak Survey explores youth’s hopes and the challenges to their taking action and contributing to a better world, questioning more than 160,000 young people in over 120 countries. The findings indicate that youth’s biggest fears are war, climate change, lack of resources and corruption. However, youth are willing to get involved to solve the most pressing issues, with a particular desire to act on Quality Education (48%). More >>

...achievements of the first half of the GAP!
UNESCO has just released a brochure illustrating the key findings and achievements from a monitoring exercise of the Global Action Programme on ESD (GAP). The data show remarkable progress made by the network of around 90 GAP Key Partners, which includes governments, civil society organizations and stakeholders from the private sector and academia. A clear learning agenda has emerged that will inform the second part of the programme, and help ensure that ESD evolves, stays relevant and adds value to the full spectrum of the SDGs.
