Strategic Partnership Between GIZ and energypedia

Strategic partnership between GIZ and energypedia In June 2017, Robert Heine, energypedia’s Managing Director and Bernhard Zymla, Head of Energy and Transport Section at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), signed a strategic partnership agreement, “Digitalization and Energy”.
This strategic partnership will facilitate increased collaboration between energypedia and GIZ energy projects in the following areas: global knowledge management, digital documentation of knowledge generated and communication of good practices from GIZ projects, joint webinars and answering questions from GIZ projects through the energypedia community (crowdsourcing).

Mini-grid Webinar Series: Productive End Use of Mini-Grids Using Micro/Mini Hydro

This is the third in a series of three webinars on mini-grids and will focus on Productive End Use (PEU) of mini-grids using micro/mini hydro. The webinar will feature case studies from Indonesia, Myanmar and Nepal and will focus on the social and technical pre-conditions for PEU and pros and cons of electrifying "existing activities” versus “new businesses”. This webinar is a collaboration between energypedia, the Hydro Empowerment Network and the Skat Foundation.

Energypedia at the Off-grid Power Conference – Intersolar 2017

Energypedia had a number of interesting talks with potential and frequent energypedia authors at the Intersolar 2017 (booth of BSW/GIZ/BMZ), in June in Munich. During the “Off-grid Power Conference 2017”, which was part of Intersolar, participants had the chance to discuss topics like mini-grids, investment and financing opportunities, off-grid solutions for humanitarian settings, and for agricultural purposes. “Pay-as-you-go” for Cooking Fuel

Traditionally, one of the barriers for promoting clean cooking fuel is the initial high cost of the stove and the inaccessibility of small quantities of fuel. To address this question, few companies such as KOKO networks and PayGo Energy in Nairobi; KopaGas in Tanzania; and Environfit are launching pay-per-use services, to allow the customers to pay for LPG over time via mobile money.

African Development Bank (AfDB) Commits USD 12 Billion for Africa

AfDB has committed USD 12 billion to enhance electricity access to over 350 million African people in the next five years. The Bank plans to connect 130 million people to the grid, provide electricity to over 75 million via off-grid systems and also provide 150 million people with clean cooking energy. The bank will also leverage USD 45-50 billion from private sectors to electrify Africa.

G20 Energy Efficiency Investment Toolkit launched

The G20 Energy Efficiency Investment Toolkit provides a set of voluntary options for policy makers to scale up energy efficiency policies and financing tools. It includes assessment of current energy efficiency investments by sector and region, good practices and case studies on instruments and approaches to encourage energy efficiency investments among different sectors. The toolkit was launched during the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial in Beijing, China.

China to Lend USD 123 Million to Cameroon

The Bank of China has agreed to lend USD 123 million to Cameroon government to finance the phase II of the solar rural electrification program launched by the government. Under Phase II, 32 kW of off-grid PV capacity will be installed to provide access to more than 350 communities. Overall, this program is targeting 1,000 communities (including 150,000 people). Currently, only 48% of Cameroon’s population has access to power.

Ashden Award Winners Announced

On 15 June 2017, 13 international organizations were awarded the Ashden Award for their ground-breaking work in promoting access to clean and sustainable energy all around the globe. The winners included organizations such as Ecolibrium Energy, Empower Generation, Futurepump, Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT), Hangzhou Bicycle Service, Mobilsol, Pamir Energy and PEG Africa.

Milk Cooling System Wins Intersolar Award

Phaesun and the University of Hohenheim won the Intersolar Award 2017 in the category "Outstanding Solar Projects" with their innovative milk cooling system for farmers in rural areas. This cooling system with the help of solar energy, allows farmers to cool their milk in poorly developed infrastructures.

Electricity for All – A Driver for Development in Africa?

This Impact Note by RWI and Leibniz Institute for Economic Research presents recent research results and policy recommendations regarding electrification strategies for rural Africa in a nutshell.
Effects on income, health and education in newly connected communities are low. Moreover, the poorest households are lacking funds to get connected. This calls for a stronger focus on electrification through low-cost off-grid technologies, which could improve the cost-benefit balance.

Crowd Power – Mapping the Market for Energy Access

This report by GVEP provides an overview of the crowdfunding for energy access market to date. Growing from a little known concept at the beginning of this century to an industry worth over $140 billion globally in 2015, crowdfunding is now ubiquitous. However, crowdfunding for energy access is still a niche market segment, with $3.4 million raised for individuals, charities, NGOs and social enterprises in Africa and Asia in 2015. The off-grid solar sector alone raised in total $276 million in investments across both regions in 2015.

Renewables 2017 Global Status Report

This year’s edition reveals a global energy transition well underway with record new additions on installed renewable energy capacity, rapidly falling costs, and the decoupling of economic growth and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions for the third year running. But despite these positive trends the pace of the transition is not on track to achieve the goals established in the Paris Agreement. The report is published by REN21.

Global Bioenergy Statistics 2017 

In 2014, the supply of biomass globally has increased to 59.2 EJ – a 2.6% increase compared to 2013. Overall, this accounted for 10.3% of the global energy supply. Biomass supply accounts for three quarters of the total renewable energy supply. Forestry continues to be a key part of biomass supply accounting for 87% of the total biomass supply providing woodfuel, wood industry residues, recovered wood, charcoal etc. Agriculture sector contributes 10% via use of animal byproducts, agricultural byproducts and energy crops.
The report was launched by the World Bioenergy Association.

Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review 2017

According to this report by IRENA, in 2016, 9.8 million people had renewable energy jobs. The report shows that solar photovoltaic (PV) was the largest employer in 2016, with 3.1 million jobs — up 12% from 2015 — mainly in China, the United States and India. New wind installations contributed to a 7% increase in global wind employment, raising it up to 1.2 million jobs. Brazil, China, the United States and India also proved to be key bioenergy job markets, with biofuels accounting for 1.7 million jobs, biomass 0.7 million, and biogas 0.3 million.
