NZRA Board nominations

Are you one of recreation's champions? Do you have the leadership skills to motivate and inspire? If so, the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) needs you on its Board. NZRA is a charitable body governed by a national Board of seven people. Four Board positions are elected by the membership and three positions are appointed by NZRA's Board Appointments Panel. Two of our current board members have served their first term, so we are now open for nominations for those positions. Each position is for a three-year term and elected Board members must be members of NZRA.
Nominations close 18 August, and the election process will follow. New Board members will be announced at the NZRA AGM during National Conference in November.

Let's Celebrate

NZOIA turns 30 this year!

Way back in the good old days circa 1987 there was a growing pressure on outdoor instructors to have a set of standards to go by which would result in professionalising the industry.  The concept of an association of outdoor instructors who would monitor their own standards was formed.  The inaugural General Meeting of NZOIA was held in Wellington with 130 passionate people debating what their new association would look like.  If you have ever been to a NZOIA AGM you can well imagine what this meeting entailed.  Getting a whole pile of leaders in one room and trying to come to an agreement can be an interesting process.  Eventually the outcome was an endorsed constitution and the birth of NZOIA.  30 strong years later NZOIA has a membership of 1138 people and assesses 27 qualifications and endorsements for the industry.

NZOIA is run by the industry for the industry; when you are a member of NZOIA you are NZOIA.

So...Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday dear NZOIA, Happy Birthday to us.  Thanks for keeping NZOIA alive and well.

FAQ

Q: Why do I have to retain Associate membership at $60 a year to put my qualification on hold?

A: A lot can happen within the industry while you're on hold – look at how the Health and Safety at Work Act and Adventure Activity Regulations have affected us over the last few years. Maintaining your NZOIA membership ensures that you are kept informed of important industry updates through the weekly 4YA newsletter and the Quarterly magazine.  Down-grading to an Associate Membership makes this affordable.  While you’re away overseas or nurturing a wee one, NZOIA continues to develop and review qualifications and advocate on behalf of its members with input into things like the Tertiary Review of Qualifications (TRoQ), representing members viewpoints through the implementation of the Adventure Activity Regulations and input into Activity Specific Guidelines. NZOIA is very fortunate to have a bunch of highly skilled and passionate people who volunteer time to help out in different areas but at the end of the day, it is a not-for-profit organisation and it relies on your membership fees and external funding in order to exist.

Well into the second half of the year, and time to take a break. I'm at the NZOIA Board meeting today in Christchurch, then off to hit the slopes for the next few weeks with the family. I'll leave it to Pip and Penny to write the next couple of weeks 4YA's!
