Greenbusch staff is traveling up north to Alaska for the summer!

GBG has an exciting new hydroacoustics project in the small city of Unalakleet and we are excited to share our travels and progress as the project advances.
The River Revetment Phase III Project will install a sheet pile bulkhead (partition) on the north spit at the mouth of the Unalakleet River in Unalakleet, Alaska. Greenbusch will be providing Underwater Sound Pressure Monitoring and Control Measure for fish habitat. Greenbusch monitoring staff will be living near the worksite at Browns Lodge and be present on-site measuring underwater sound levels generated by pile driving to assess compliance with the Project’s underwater sound level limits. Greenbusch will provide the contractor with daily reports.
A total of 532 sheet piles, 11 termination piles, 9 wye piles and pipe piles of varying diameter (11 18-inch, 12 8 5/8-inch and two 24-inch) are scheduled for installation over the duration of the Project.

Stay tuned for our future updates on this unique project! Greenbusch also celebrated the Fourth of July in Unalakleet and we will be sharing the festivities in our next newsletter!

Quick Facts:

  • Unalakleet is a city in Nome Census Area, Alaska, United States, in the western part of the state.
  • 2010 US Census recorded the population was 688.
  • Unalakleet is the first checkpoint on the Norton Sound in the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race 851 miles from the starting point in Anchorage.
The crane is used to move piles into place before they are installed.
End of the day progress. The last two remaining sheet piles sticking up were later drove further down.

Highlight of the Week

Authentic beaver hat! A tribal elder came by to visit the crew after dinner. She was selling a variety of animal fur hats, including the beaver hat (pictured right) and otter hats. A member of the crew purchased a hat and several others ordered slippers. Fur has a cultural and historical significance in the region.
