Your news, views and important updates

Welcome to your July 2017 bulletin from the Diocese of Hereford

We've done it!

Hereford Diocese has successfully secured £525,000 in Strategic Development Funding from the Church Commissioners towards supporting our shared priority of spiritual and numerical growth.

The award will pay for six new Intergenerational Missioners, who will work in our poorest communities and three of our market towns to ensure our church congregations are more reflective of the areas they serve.

They will focus on reaching people who have never attended church and children and young adults.

A key responsibility will also be to develop the faith of newcomers along with that of regular churchgoers who want to deepen their Christian Commitment.

Signing support for our Armed Forces

Bishop Richard and the Dean, Michael Tavinor have made a commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant by signing the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the diocese and the cathedral. They signed on Flag Raising Day in Hereford (19th June). Keep Reading

First Armed Forces Champion

Prayers were led at the Flag Raising by the first Armed Forces Champion for the Diocese of Hereford, the Revd Paul Roberts, Assistant Curate of the Bartestree Cross Group of Churches.

Mr Roberts said; “It’s a great privilege to be asked to be Hereford Diocese’s first Armed Forces Champion.”

“As a former member of the Territorial Army I know the importance of honouring the selfless commitment made by the members of our armed forces.”

“My new role does, however, give a stronger voice to veteran’s issues within the church, which can only be a good thing.”

Parish Offer Submissions

Thank you to every PCC that has met to consider prayerfully how much to contribute to the Common Fund for next year.  It’s encouraging to see many making generous commitments to sustain parish ministry across our Diocese.

30 June is the final day for submitting Parish Offers for 2018.  If your PCC’s offer is still outstanding, would the PCC Secretary or Treasurer please send the commitment form straight away to your Deanery Treasurer, with a copy to the diocesan office in Hereford preferably by email to finance@hereford.anglican.org.  Thank you for your support.

Treasurer Training proves popular

40 people attended a workshop for PCC treasurers in Ludlow last month. The sessions are great for those new to the role or anyone who'd like to get some top tips for this important position. Interested in attending?
It was a baking hot Royal Three Counties Show this year - which meant much interest in the church tent for refreshments!  There was also some dancing by this unlikely pair to one of the fantastic performances from our church schools. The tent is a brilliant joint enterprise with our friends in Worcester and Gloucester dioceses. You can see some photos of the day on the Worcester Diocese Facebook page here and here.
Fit for Function, Fit for the Future, the diocese is partnering with Worcester and Lichfield dioceses and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham to host a one day conference looking at church buildings. 'Fit for Function, Fit for the Future' is in Wolverhampton on Thursday 20th July. You can read more here or book your tickets on Eventbrite.

Are you a member of the Hereford Prayer Hub?

Set up by Revd Anna Branston in South Wye it's a Facebook group for Christians offering prayer across the city all day, every day.  With members from all denominations you can ask for prayer, share prayer requests for others (with their permission!) or bring your own testimonies to the group. Join it here.

News in brief

  • Clergy Emergency Response Team
More members are needed for the voluntary interdenominational Clergy Emergency Response Team (CERT). Retirements and relocations mean that numbers for our diocese are quite low. Some new volunteers have come forward but more are needed to ensure good geographical spread. CERT members make themselves available for call out by the civil authorities to respond to a large scale domestic emergency.  If you are interested please email the Archdeacon of Hereford, Paddy Benson.

  • Requiem for Aleppo
Colwall St James has won a major grant award in the One Friday project managed by St John's College at Durham. It encourages churches to develop new creative ways of telling the Easter story for their local communities. The award was for the Colwall Requiem for Aleppo which was performed in the church on Passion Sunday. Read more about the music here.

  • Updated contacts for Community Partnership and Funding
If you are involved in or thinking of a church building project please make sure you have the correct contact details for the Community Partnership and Funding Office. You can check them here.

  • Church sketches
Are you interested in art and churches? We're looking for someone to help put on an art show featuring 400+ sketches of our churches. They have taken artist, Reg Portman 15 years to complete after he started the voluntary project for therapy after an illness. If you would like to help with this please email Communications Assistant, Cheryl Combstock.
