Sports Personality of the Year 2017
Congratulations to Liberty Hartley and Charlie Levick who were awarded the 2017 Sports Personality of the Year Awards. They were chosen from many incredible nominations, who all received awards for their outstanding participation.

Other awards included our Year 11 football team who won the Team of the Year title, following their County Cup win and run to the last 16 of the ESFA National Cup. Year 10 pupil Sidney Stuart was recognised for his Leadership work on Saturday mornings, and Yassie Edgson took home the Ros Bastian Award for her commitment and effort in so many areas of the school’s Study Support Programme. There was also recognition for Georgia Davies, who was the inaugural winner of the Marie Hunter Award.

The customary male PE staff v female PE staff challenges took place between awards, this year taking the form of ‘Question of Sport’. The challenge culminated in an 18-17 win for the boys, and both teams received full marks for entertainment! The audience was also treated to wonderful performances from our School Games Street Dance crew 'Sladies', and a singing and piano solo piece from former year 11 student Bex Hamilton.

It was a special evening, befitting of the incredible year it has been for the pupils and teams at Penryn College.

Year 9s Graduate!
Last week we celebrated the achievements of our year 9 pupils as they graduated from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4.

We were thrilled to welcome Shelly Peters, Mayor of Penryn, as the evening's Guest Speaker. During the evening, students put on some fantastic performances including a live band, Tea-themed poetry readings and a solo performance from Hollie Davis.

Congratulations to all our winners, and welcome to Key Stage 4!

From the School Business Manager:
Is your child eligible for Free School Meals?

Your child may be eligible for free school meals if you (or the child themselves in their own right) is in receipt of any of the following benefits.
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Job Seekers' Allowance (Income-Based) and equal based Job Seekers Allowance.
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA-IR) and equal based Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC) with an Annual income of less than £16,190.
  • Guarantee Element of Pension Credit (GPC)
  • Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (IAA) Support
  • Universal Credit
Please note that anyone claiming Working Tax Credit, Contribution-Based Job Seeker's Allowance and/or Contribution-Based Employment and Support Allowance is NOT eligible for free school meals, regardless of what other benefits/credits are being claimed. However, you will be temporarily eligible to claim free school meals if you receive a Working Tax Credit run-on, which is the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit.

If you believe you are eligible then you can apply here:
School Meals - Cornwall Council

Under the proposed new National Funding Formula for all schools across the UK which is due to come into force in 2 years’ time, the college will receive extra funding to assist those children who are in receipt of free school meals.  If you believe you may be entitled, I would encourage you to apply.
Awesome Art!
We've recently seen these wonderful displays on show along our main corridor.

The mobiles were created by our Year 9s, and inspired by Kandinsky and Synaesthesia: "the hearing of a certain sound induces the visualisation of a certain colour".
Summer Reading!

When they've been reading all year at school, it's not surprising children want to run around frantically outside and have some fun when summer finally arrives. But the long holidays are also an ideal time to build on good reading habits, relax and foster a real life-long love of books away from the classroom...

For fantastic new reads please  take a look at the document on the Literacy page.

They could even take part in your local library’s teen reading challenge.

The following websites have some great suggestions too for the perfect summer read:

Assistance Needed

Following his 2 weeks volunteering at a zoo in Belize over Christmas 2015, Dave Cunningham, the School Business Manager, and his partner Leanne are to spend 2 weeks in August volunteering at the Lanta Animal Welfare Centre in Thailand, helping look after abandoned and sick dogs and cats.

You can find details of the Centre at:  http://www.lantaanimalwelfare.com/.  The centre needs lots of help as it is voluntarily funded and so Dave and Leanne are asking if anyone has any dog or cat collars, harnesses, leads or toys in reasonable condition lying around that they no longer need they would be willing to donate.

The plan is to fill one of their two 30kg suitcases just with items for the centre. Items can be dropped into a box next to Reception any time or by staff or pupils at Dave’s office in the library. Thank you for any support you are able to offer
