All You Need to Know to Choose the Best Grass for Your Lawn

Achieving a lush lawn over the summer calls for careful grass selection, regular watering, nutrition, and proper maintenance.

Summer is here; however, despite the sunny and warm climate, summer heat stress can be a problem to your yard, especially during the months of July and August. As a result, your yard might not currently look as green and lush as you might like. The heat paired with wet weather, and increased foot traffic are some of the major sources of stress for your yard. Your yard's condition, however, depends on the grass you pick. We know you want to choose the best grass for your lawn.

fescue grassFirst, you need to know what type of grass you currently have. If your grass is currently starting to brown, it's likely that you have Fescue Grass, which used to be quite popular in the Carolinas. Despite its popularity the grass doesn't always perform well in our climate. On the USDA Plan Hardiness Zone, we are currently right on the cusp between zones 6 and 7. Fescue is rated for up to zone 6 which means our climate is often too hot for this type of grass. This grass has a tendency to develop brown patches which can be due to Brown Patch Fungus, a lack of moisture or even your dog's favorite watering zone. Although these patches are treatable, they are not curable. By and large, if the culprit is Brown Patch Fungus, our clients opt to just wait until we aerate and reseed in the Fall rather than treat it because of the expense.

Choosing the Best Grass For Your Lawn

A lush green yard creates an unmatched ambiance. Achieving this over summer calls for a careful grass selection coupled with regular watering, nutrition, and proper maintenance.

Here's a compilation of some grass types you should be looking into, along with their pros and cons.

Fescue grass
As we mentioned above, fescue grass is not a hardy or low-maintenance grass. Not only do we water our client's yard an average of a dozen times more per year with this type of grass, it also doesn't sprout back once its uprooted which means we need to reseed to keep your yard nicely filled in. This grass is okay for yards that don't get a lot of full sun but it takes a beating from foot traffic and often inherits bald or brown patches in the summer when you want your yard to look pristine.

Zoysia
zoysia grassWith its lush, soft texture and dark green hues, this is our top seller. Unlike other grasses, it's more drought resistant than the cool season grasses used in the North. Additionally, it performs well in hot and dry conditions, keeping its green shade throughout the summer. Once established, it fills in and makes a thick and dense turf, which effectively chokes out weeds and can support heavy foot traffic. No reseeding or aerating is needed with this grass. This type of grass will brown out and go dormant in the winter months much like the rest of your yard, but starts to green up again as soon as spring hits. This means less mowing throughout our colder months.

Bermudagrass
If you're looking for grass to spruce up your lawn this summer, this is our second top seller. Bermudagrass is extremely durable and can do well in warm Southern regions as it loves full sunlight. This type of grass also browns out and goes dormant over the winter meaning less mowing and maintenance for you.

Process of replacing grass

Thinking of replacing the grass in your yard? Below is a step-by-step procedure we take to add new sod for a fresh, green lawn:

  1. Spray and kill the current yard. This may take up to 2-3 weeks before the yard is completely clear and ready for new ground cover.
  2. Till and prepare the yard for sod.
  3. Cover the yard with sod. No seeding necessary for Zoysia or Bermuda grasses.
  4. You will find that you can do your first mowing of your new grass within 3-4 weeks!

As you enjoy outdoor activities during the summer, consider how your grass is performing. For approximately $1.50 per square foot, you could have a lawn that feels soft and welcoming underfoot.
