Welcome to the Downtown Alpena e-newsletter!

If you're receiving this e-mail, you have successfully subscribed to receive the latest and greatest downtown news, hot off the press and delivered straight to your inbox. In it, we'll cover:
  • Downtown news and events
  • What the DDA and Director are up to
  • Opportunities to give feedback about downtown events and plans

What's on the docket this month:

- Proposed parking changes to 2nd Avenue: At its board meeting yesterday, the DDA Board approved an adapted version of the two-way street plan that would keep parking on both sides of the street & reduce lane widths. The plan must go before and be approved by City Council to be adapted. Any feedback on the plan should go to City Council members.

-Sidewalk Sales: Sidewalk sales are scheduled for July 20-22nd to coordinate with the end of the Brown Trout Festival. Many merchants have already confirmed they are participating, so spread the word

-The first Art Walk of the season was a success! Over 60 "leave-behinds" were turned in by visitors who visited all six official stops. The second Art Walk is planned for Friday, July 28th from 5-8 pm. Like Alpena Art Walks on Facebook for details.

- Planning for Chowder Cook-off 2017: Have feedback on past Chowder Cook-offs? We're just beginning to plan, so reach out to Anne at 989.356.6422 anneg@alpena.mi.us.

- Speaking of event planning... The Promotions Committee is assessing what types of events are valuable to the downtown. Stay tuned for ways to give your feedback.

From the director's desk...

Is there any better place to celebrate the Fourth of July than Alpena? Walking through downtown on July 3rd, I could feel the buzz of activity, of merchants serving new swarms of customers, of waitstaff running from table to table, of families wondering where to go in next, of people that maybe grew up here and only have the fortune to visit over holidays commenting on what's changed, on what's grown.

If you're like me and spend every day downtown, it's easy to not notice all of the changes happening. New businesses opening, expanding, moving, renovating. Parks being updated, seating being added. New owners, new employees, new faces. But when taken in accumulation-- imagine if you hadn't been downtown since last July-- imagine what you may say when visiting this fourth.

It's always rejuvenating to hear friends' and family's reactions who haven't been here for awhile-- to remind me to step back every once in awhile, to remind me that all of the seemingly little things add up to something much bigger happening in our downtown.

And of course, to be thankful that I get to enjoy this beautiful downtown and community every day-- not just on the holidays.
