Bike Share Rolls Into Oakland

Yippee! The Bay Area bike share program expanded service this week to Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley with 400 bikes at 40 stations. And we'll have have 1,500 bikes throughout the East Bay by Labor Day. Pick up a bike at one location and leave at another when you get to your destination, all without having to worry about fixing a flat or lugging a lock. Available 24/7 so you can drive less, stretch your legs and explore!

Visit FordGoBike.com to find a list of stations and learn how to sign up. Grab your ride with your clipper card and go. Or stop by Fruitvale BART and Oakland Main Library to pay by cash. Pricing is $3 per ride, $9.95 a day or $124 a year. Low income discount passes are $5 the first year and $5/month in following years.

TransForm, a transportation advocacy group, and Bike East Bay successfully advocated for expanding the station map to include the neighborhoods around West Oakland and Fruitvale BART from initial proposed locations. But that still leaves out much of East Oakland. Learn more about how these groups are working on lowering barriers to shared mobility in underserved areas. Bike share should be a part of improving transportation equity across all of Oakland and available to all regardless of income and race.

Don't Miss Pedalfest

Pedalfest is Bike East Bay’s free celebration of cycling, family, food and fun. Roll by Jack London Square on July 22, 11am-6pm for a day of bicycle shenanigans. Enjoy dare-devil stunts, art bikes, and live music on a pedal-powered stage. Test ride wild, wacky and wonderful bikes at the eBike test track, Whymcycles corral and kid's bike rodeo. The Amphibious Bike Race starts at 11am! Stop by WOBO's booth to bling out your bike.

Oakland Tour de Fat

Grab your tickets and start planning for the Oakland Tour de Fat. Expect to experience the unexpected. Fat Tire is bringing the party with Hollis Brown and the Tour de Fat ensemble cast of performers. Ready your eyes and ears for a mix of musicians, circus performers, vaudeville acts, magicians, comedians, and mind-blowing provocateurs. Costumes are highly encouraged (and a mindset to party is mandatory).

You can also sign up to volunteer and get in for free.

Ride Like a Girl Bike Camping

The 2017 Ride Like a Girl season closer is a bike camping trip to Coyote Hills Regional Park!

Ride from Oakland (30 miles) or Union City (6 miles) with a group to enjoy an intro to bike camping experience. Learn how to pack gear on your bike and get comfortable biking with gear at a pre-trip orientation.

Prior bike camping (or camping) experience is not required for the trip, but we ask that all participants be comfortable biking for the distance they pick and be confident on their bikes while carrying weight and riding as a group. Participants will be responsible for their own food and drink. Water, bathrooms, campfire and s'mores provided.

Suggested donation of $15 to cover campsite fees and safety gear. WOBO and Bike East Bay members ride for free!

Pilot Plaza Projects

In May, the City of Oakland opened up a survey to collect community interests about how neighbors might want to improve their local streets and public spaces with low-cost, community-led ideas. Over 130 ideas were submitted from all over Oakland.

Nearly one-fifth of the responses were for creative crosswalks, where artist get busy making intersections more visible and beautiful. Other ideas included glittery sidewalks, art-filled underpasses and tiny homes.  Check out the full survey results

Looks like the survey is still open so keep sending fun ideas.
