Poetry at Fox
Fox has recently participated in training on 'The Power of Poetry' - a course organised by the CLPE and funded by the Arts Council, which involves five days of creative training from poets Roger McGough, Valerie Bloom, AF Harold, Sarah Crossan and anthologist, Allie Esiri. The project involves action-research in school which has been focused this term on developing a new unit of work in Year 4 based on John Lyon's poetry collection 'Dancing in the Rain'. The unit of work has focused on the exploration and expression of identity and place through poetry and during the second half of the unit looked particularly at the Notting Hill Carnival. As part of the project, children have kept poetry journals - just like the well-known poets who led the course - which they have used at home and at school to record their inspiration, draft poems and explore the interplay of drawing and writing. Their recent writing has been extraordinary:

Glowing embers slither

across the emptiness

of the sky

when

the big bottle of coke spills

across the blue glass

swimming

like an invasion.
Lois Montagut

As the darkness flows across the sky,

stillness emerges

from dark ash.

The sun's rays break the heat limits

making everyone whine

and it beats down on us like an angry dragon

in a tantrum

burning the ground

until it's lava hot.

Rory De Carteret

Thunderous, booming footsteps...

marine, blue oceans

shining in the sun,

cars vanishing mysteriously,

deafening crows shouting,

glowing lilies on rivers,

sailing away,

in flaming anger and ear piercing noises.

Instrumental lessons 2017-2018
Mrs Hardisty is in the process of organising instrumental lessons before she goes on maternity leave in September. Children who will be in years 3-6 in 2018-18 can learn violin, cello, brass or guitar. Please see the attached letter for details and complete the form and hand it into the office if you would like your child to start an instrument. Please also inform the office if your child is planning on giving up lessons at the end of this academic year so that their place can be allocated to someone else and return any instruments to school before the end of term.

Fox Book Club

Thank you to everyone who attended the last Book Club of the year. With lots of parents, staff and children from Years 4, 5 and 6 attending, it was a huge success. We really enjoyed discussing ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by Ross Mackenzie and were so impressed by the high quality of the children’s responses. The children certainly ‘brought their imagination’ to the session and designed their own ‘Wonder’: a room filled with clouds; a room where whatever you thought of appeared in front of you; and a room of endless possibilities.  We look forward to seeing you at Book Club next year!

Late bookings and Autumn Clubs

I would like to thank parents who have paid their late fines. However, we still have a number of outstanding fines due. If these are not paid by the beginning of next term, the School Gateway payment system will not allow parents to book Clubs or Fox Play. Please ensure that you settle any outstanding payments, including dinner money, before the end of term.
We have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of children being picked up late at the end of the day and from Fox Play. Parents are now consistently using School Gateway to book children into Fox Play. This has made  a big difference to the day to day running of Fox Play.
The Autumn 2017 Club list will be sent out on Monday. We are very excited to offer a wide range of clubs. We will take bookings for these in September.

Additional cello lesson - Tuesday 18th July

Due to the number of cello lessons missed due to inset and bank holidays, there will be an additional cello lesson for all children learning cello on Tuesday 18th July, following the normal lesson times, to ensure that children have their full quota for the term. Please ensure they have their cello and practice book on Tuesday.

Children’s Opening party- Wednesday 19th July

On Wednesday 19th July, the pupils will be celebrating the new building with a school party in the afternoon.  As part of this, we will be having afternoon games and activities.  To help us celebrate this, we are asking parents and carers to donate some ‘party food’ for us to share during the afternoon.  You may decide to coordinate this through your class representative.  As you are aware we are a nut free school, so please ensure all food is nut free.  Children can wear their best ‘party’ clothes if they like!
If you are able to send food in, please send in with your child in the morning.

Thank you for all your support during this year.

Levels of Attainemnt

Expected Levels of Attainment:

The reported attainment in your child's school reports is in relation to the standards set by the new national curriculum.  These are raised standards from previously.   It is normal across Key Stage 2 for pupils to move between the 'towards' and 'at' category for attainment, or between the 'at' and depth' due to the broad nature of the curriculum.  Please speak with your class teacher to find out about the specific targets that will help your child move from one band to another.

Maths Attainment:

As a National Maths Hub, we have focused on the research and best practice in teaching in this subject for the past 3 years.  Specifically, we have been at the forefront of the introduction of Mastery teaching, through our exchange with Shanghai - both at Fox and Ashburnham.  We are seeing the results of these improved teaching approaches across the whole school, with standards in maths at the highest levels they have ever been.  We are very proud of our Year 6 pupils.  100% of the Year 6 achieved the expected standard of the 100 scaled score or higher (compared to 77% nationally) and 69% of our pupils achieved a scaled score of 110 or more - a fantastic achievement.

Ms Madden recommends:

I’ve recently been reading ‘The No 1 Car Spotter’ series by Atinuke.  Atinuke was born in Nigeria and grew up in both Africa and the UK.  She now lives in Wales.  The books are very funny and engaging.  ‘No 1.’ is a great character, determined and ingenious.  My favourite part was when No.1 meets an American child who is technology obsessed and speaks rudely to his own father, No. 1 says ‘Is everything backwards in America?  Is everything upside-down?  There the fathers carry the bags for their children!” Above all, I think the books provide a great insight into how people live in other parts of the world.
I’d recommend this series to read to children in Key Stage 1, or for pupils in Y2 –Y4 to read independently.

Fox Fun Run

We raised £4,000 from the fun run - Thank you Fox Community!

An extra special thank you to Maja and Christian Neske for once again organising a fabulous day out for all the Fox families.
The money raised is going to be used to pay for the new line markings in both playgrounds. We are looking to have running feet around the school, enabling children to run laps of the school.

Summer Fair Success!

Thank you to all who donated your time, talents and money to help make the Summer Fair a great success! We raised more than £21,000, of which the silent auction alone raised more than £12,500!  Special thanks to all the class reps and stall owners for your leadership, and to our amazing auction and raffle teams for phenomenal effort and results.

Of the money raised, £2,100 from the Justin Bieber ticket raffle and the toy stall will be donated to an organization called EPIC to benefit those affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster. Epic works in our local community to break down barriers for all children and young people so they can have the best life chances possible. In the wake of Grenfell they opened the youth centres to serve as refuges and went out into the community to counsel children from the tower and the surrounding estates. Epic will use the Fox donation to provide a summer programme to help young people channel their anger and frustration in a way that brings about positive and lasting change. They are incredibly grateful for the support of the Fox community.

Thank you again for all your hard work on the summer fair. The FSA looks forward to meeting again in September and invites all interested in getting involved or more involved to contact us at fsasecretary1@gmail.com.

Have a fantastic summer break!
