Welcome to the Windsor Update.

This e-newsletter is provided by the Corporation of the City of Windsor.  Our hope is to share a selection of stories that Windsorites either need to know, should know, or might just like to know about in our community.

The Windsor Update joins our website citywindsor.ca, municipal Facebook page, Twitter account, and YouTube channel as some of the ways we’re engaging with you and communicating the great things happening in our city. We encourage you to create your own direct connection by signing up, “friending,” “following” and “liking” each of these opportunities for engagement.

Meet Cris Cross! Windsor’s Train Safety Ambassador

Expect to be seeing a lot of this little guy around town. Cris Cross, the new ambassador of Windsor’s Train Safety Campaign, is a personable railway sign, technically called a crossbuck, will be the centre piece of a two-year education campaign about train safety, primarily aimed at elementary aged youth and young teens.

The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness in the public around train safety and the dangers of playing near tracks or trespassing on rail property. The City’s Corporate Communications Department will be working with a number of partners during the two-year campaign, including the Windsor Police Service and the Children’s Safety Village. These partners will help share any information produced during the campaign with the thousands of young people they meet and teach each year.

You will also see Cris Cross on local billboards, on social media, in various marketing pieces, on the City’s website and starring in his very own video.  Funding for the public awareness campaign comes from a Transport Canada grant and matching funds from the City of Windsor.

Open Streets Windsor Volunteers Wanted

An estimated 10,000 people enjoyed each of our first Open Streets Windsor events in July and September of 2016, and now the next event is just around the corner! Open Streets Windsor – Ontario 150 Celebration takes place Sunday, September 17, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (new extended hours).

We owe our success last year in large part to the fantastic fleet of volunteers who helped out during the event, many of whom came from our devoted staff here at the City of Windsor. With that in mind, we are asking for your help again for the big event in 2017. Would you or someone you know like to be part of this incredible celebration of our community and Ontario’s milestone 150th anniversary? We’re looking for volunteers who are fun, friendly and excited about making a difference.

The 8-kilometre route will once again extend from Sandwich Town to Ford City, and the entire length will be closed to vehicular traffic but open to pedestrians, bicycles, wheelchairs, rollerblades and more.

If you’d like to join the team on Sunday, September 17 please visit our Volunteers page to learn more and sign up online. Volunteer shifts run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For more information, please visit the Open Streets web page or join the Open Streets Windsor – Ontario 150 Celebration Facebook event page.

City Increasing Frequency for Bulk Furniture Pickup

Windsor Residents will be able to access the bulk item collection system more frequently starting August 1, 2017.

The current collection system, which will remain in place through the month of July, offers collections one Friday per month in each zone on a schedule broken down into four collection zones:  Zone 1 collection is the first Friday of the month, zone 2 is the second Friday, etc.

As of August 1, collection will be done in Zones 1 and 2 on the first and third Friday of the month, and Zones 3 and 4 will be done on the second and fourth Fridays.  There is no bulk collection on a fifth Friday.

“We feel with the more frequent collection we’ll be able to better accommodate those residents who need us but forget to sign up until it’s too late,” said Environmental Services Manager Anne Marie Albidone. “Now when residents see that first week of pickup at a neighbour’s they might be reminded and have time to call and make the second week instead.”

Specific criteria outlining what items are acceptable and not acceptable are outlined on the City of Windsor website in the Residential Bulk Furniture Collection pages.

There is a maximum of two items per pickup, and the cost for the service is $20 per item.

To book a pickup, call 311 Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays, and 311 staff will advise you of available dates.  A credit card will be accepted over the phone, or cash and debit can be accepted at our Customer Care Centres though appointments must still be booked first by calling 311.

For complete details, including schedules, tips and restrictions, visit our Residential Bulk Furniture Collection pages.

Museum Windsor - What is this?

The Directory and Gazetteer of the County of Essex, 1866-67 says “Windsor enjoys excellent facilities for manufactures and commerce, being the western terminus of the Great Western Railway.”

The Great Western Railway arrived in downtown Windsor in 1854 and resulted in great growth for the town. This image from 1870 shows the Great Western Railway Yards looking west parallel with Sandwich St. E. (now Riverside Dr. E.).
The City of Windsor conducts surveys as a means of soliciting ideas and opinions from residents so we can better serve the community as a whole.  Check back often to see if a new survey is ready for your input.
