Comrades! Greetings from Michael Sorkin Studio, Terreform, and UR (Urban Research). As summer begins, so do new projects. It's an exciting time for us—Sorkin Studio just completed a project in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and are about to start a new one in Xi’an, China. Terreform turned heads with its presentation of Home Grown at the Mundaneum Conference in San Jose, Costa Rica. We are also in the beginning stages of a new book project entitled Unsettlement and are eager to meet with interested collaborators. Furthermore, UR is pleased to announce its latest title, Downward Spiral, is ready for pre-order and will be a feature event this week. We hope you'll join us on our endeavors! Read on for details.
Mixed Use Development, Corporation Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Sorkin Studio has completed a study of central Belfast, commissioned by the Northern Ireland government, to propose strategies for its revitalization. The work is focused on bringing mixed-use projects to three sites under public ownership, each of which is to include government offices, commercial space, housing, and cultural facilities.
Urban Design Competition of Baima River Area, Fengxi New City, Xi'an, China
Sorkin Studio won first place in the Baima River Urban Design Competition.

Excerpt from project text: "The circular form allows us to inscribe a powerful morphology that forms an exception to an over-dominant grid and helps to organize a large architectural element: a great crescent of building. Like many other urban parks, the one will create a special edge that—added to the edge facing the Baima River—will yield especially desirable views and urban character."

Unsettlement
Terreform is pleased to announce a new book project analyzing the spatial and cultural dimensions of the refugee camp. As a morphology, refugee camps are now widely seen by international organizations and many governments as ineffective and even harmful to refugee populations. Unsettlement will feature contributions from architects, social scientists, and urbanists interested in the spatial transformations and interventions required to incorporate populations from a broad range of “unsettled sites” into the fabric of cities.
