..... first, news of the Lecture on Thursday 20th July....

  Bringing Grandma to Tea!

Speaker: Barry Venning

Barry - a historian of British Art - has a particular interest in Turner on whom he has published widely.  His interests and his teaching extend from medieval architecture to contemporary British art.  Modern art is often considered difficult, but it is much less so when seen through the eyes of some of the

greatest cartoonists of the last 150 years, who provide a humorous and sceptical but instructive guide to modern art from Courbet to the Britart of the 1990s. Thus, in his talk next week, Barry will give us all the chance to enjoy the insight and cartoons of the immortal Giles which makes for an absorbing, illuminating and, above all, funny lecture!
Carl Giles, pictured here, once said that he loved his creation, Grandma Giles – that fearsome, black-clad, gambling, drinking battleaxe – because she allowed him to say things through his cartoons that he was too polite to say in person. She helped him to poke fun at authority in all its forms, from Hitler to traffic wardens and even his employers at the Daily Express (who didn’t trust him) and
sub-editors scouring his cartoons for subversive background details. His admirers included Prince Charles, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Tommy Cooper, and it was no surprise when he was voted Britain’s best-loved cartoonist in 2000. Few people realise, however, that this likeable and humane satirist was also a war
correspondent who witnessed the horrors of Belsen, where he found that the camp commandant, Josef Kramer, was also a great fan of his work. Giles gave us a remarkable picture of a half-century of British life.
As his editor John Gordon put it, he was 'a spreader of happiness’ and ‘a genius…with the common touch’. So we should have a real treat in store next week.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS!
The glorious flower arrangements at our meetings are probably something we all tend to take for granted. Every month the most wonderful displays are produced by members of a special team led by Jane Buttery, but the flowers are only in place for a very short time before they’re ‘dismantled’ and distributed to members who perhaps are a bit under the weather. Each month, Keith Lawrence photographs
the displays and we thought it might be nice to feature the previous month’s arrangement in THE NEWSLETTER so that you may have the chance to see them again, or indeed for the first time.        In June the flowers, pictured here, were beautifully arranged by Sheila Ashley-Smith (right, photo by Jill Bray) - well done Sheila!

And now a closing message from our Chairman in holiday mood

We all enjoyed a splendid Members’ Lunch at the June meeting and, on behalf of the membership,  I would like to thank Jill and all her team of wine pourers, meal servers, coffee ladies & table layers very much for a splendid meal, not of course forgetting the caterers. Some of the team are here: Marion Tremlett is adding the flowers and, whilst it doesn't look like it, there were some men involved too.
For instance there's the chap who tells you when to actually get your food - but we’ll forget him. I would also like to thank everyone who was there, for making it such an enjoyable day and, as we adjourn for the holiday season (and of course there’s NO meeting in August), I should like to wish all of you who may be going away in the next few weeks, perhaps with family, a very happy time.

RICHARD SEYMOUR - CHAIRMAN

Food glorious food
A well earned break!

and finally.....

There will be no NEWSLETTER in August as there is no meeting. So the next edition is scheduled for September. However, it will possibly arrive a bit earlier than usual as yours truly is planning to be with our party of 46 other intrepid travellers in Budapest from 10-16th. Meanwhile I look forward to seeing you next week and to enjoying the lecture on Giles, especially as one of his nephews was in my form at school and often talked about him - but he never mentioned his grandma.

With very best wishes.
