Inside Vaughn Williams' Decision to Return to Boston College
Kennesaw State AD Williams will exit the Owls department after six years to join Boston College AD Jarmond in Chestnut Hill as Senior Assoc. AD for Administration. Williams is plenty familiar with BC after previously serving on the Eagles staff from 1998 to 2004. Jarmond further solidified his executive staff with the hire of USF Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Fisher Gates for the same role on the Heights. (link); Williams penned for AthleticDirectorU on why he's excited to return to Boston, "With Martin at Boston College, they’re looking to get things done, to bring a new passion, new energy and new purpose to the athletic department and our 750 student-athletes. Everything I’ve known about the Eagles has been centered around the holistic development of a student-athlete in order to be a servant. Everything is done through possessing a servant mentality and making servant leaders. That’s in the fabric of Boston College. It’s more than just being a student-athlete. And it is at the core of who I am as a person and a leader." More. (link)
Boston College AD Jarmond also profiled by the Boston Globe's Benbow starting with an exchange Jarmond had with the father of a prospective FB student-athlete who had concerns about the racial diversity of the city. Jarmond: "Let me tell you this: I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think it could work. Make no mistake, if your son comes here, he is going to be OK, because I’m going to make sure he’s OK." Former UNC Wilmington MBB HC Wainwright recounts Jarmond's skill set during his time with the Seahawks, knew he had the makeup to lead, influence people & raise money. Ohio State AD Smith: "Frankly, I was an athletic director at the age of 29, and I was very much like Martin, and I could see that in him. Just constantly on the go, constantly trying to get better, constantly trying to connect with different types of people. That’s so important in what we do." More. (link)
"I can't say that I ever contemplated but if you told me back then, 'do you see 10 years?' I'd probably say, 'probably not' but this is a phenomenal place and I get to work with such remarkable people that I'm not looking to do anything else and I thoroughly enjoy what I have the opportunity to do here." That's Notre Dame AD Swarbrick who adds that he never envisioned being an AD, but was super impressed with Prez Jenkins once the pair first met. Hopes his greatest success in South Bend is upgrading the student experience, also points to ACC & College FB Playoff inclusion as key accomplishments during his tenure. (link); Swarbrick also believes the NCAA appeals process in connection to some academic issues for FB should be resolved by the end of the year, but offers no expectation on the outcome. "The irony here--and it's sort of at the crux of what is a pretty technical debate--is if we'd expel the students we wouldn't have an NCAA violation, that's crazy." (link)
Iowa AD Barta stands behind previous decisions that led to the high-profile settlements involving former Senior Assoc. AD Meyer & former Field Hockey HC Griesbaum, "...very confident with the decisions that we made and that I made. Tactically, I suppose you could always think of things that could have been improved upon." Says he hasn't considered resigning & has the full support of Prez Harreld. "I love what college athletics stands for. I’m not going to start making decisions based on what’s legally going to protect me the most. I’m going to do what I’ve tried to do for 30 years. I’m going to try to do what I think is right." Bullish on Big Ten TV money no matter where the market goes, expects one more year of a budget deficit, then wants to buoy the Hawkeyes reserve fund that will be down to $3M at the end of the year. (link)
Big 12: The Dallas Morning News continues its series, notes key takeaways from an interview with former Texas A&M Prez Loftin, "It was clear to me that as long as DeLoss Dodds was the AD at Texas, he really wanted to punish Texas A&M for leaving the Big 12. He said that. He said some very bad things about us." Further, "not sure" if there's a big financial benefit to A&M & Texas getting back on the gridiron against one another. (link); Fox Sports analyst Klatt: "The pressure on Lincoln Riley and Tom Herman is immense -- not only for the schools, the alumni bases, the senses of pride and tradition but also for the health of the Big 12. If one or the other falter, it would put the Big 12 in a desperate scenario in the next five or six years." Commish Bowlsby says Herman reminds him of a young Jim Harbaugh. Bowlsby should know, given he hired Harbaugh at Stanford. (link); More, this piece centers on the infiltration of the SEC brand into the state of Texas. (link)
SEC: Yahoo's Forde wonders if any FB programs in the East can help to balance the overall league. Points specifically to Georgia, Florida &Tennessee. Gators HC McElwain takes exception, "Will somebody at least say we exist? That would be nice." (link); CBS Sports' Dodd says it's up to Florida's offense to prove it belongs in the national conversation. (link); Commish Sankey says it's possible SEC Media Days could move from Hoover. Potential locations: Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas. (link)
The NCAA releases a statement on the eligibility of top-ranked Texas MBB frosh Bomba after some tension over the past two weeks: "After evaluating all available information, the NCAA determined the assistance Greer Love provides to Mohammad Bomba does not violate the rules. Bomba remains certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center." (link)
North Carolina & IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions are declaring the first year of their partnership a success after generating more than $2.5M in new ticket sales revenue and helping the Rams Club raise more than $85K in new donation revenue. In addition to season and promotional ticket sales, the Carolina Ticket Sales team has focused on group packages, generating over $350K. UNC AD Cunningham: "IMG-Learfield Ticket Solutions has done an outstanding job since joining our team one year ago. They represent Carolina in an impeccable way, have been a terrific addition to our team and have helped us generate a significant amount of incremental revenue to support our sport programs. We look forward to progressing even more with this partnership in the years to come." (link)
Ohio Asst. AD for Marketing & Sales Bolon resigned from his position late last month & pleaded guilty to tampering with records connected to a university investigation. "The police report stated that on Nov. 5, 2015, OUPD met with OU administration about suspicious financial activities. After an investigation, OUPD met with the university’s internal auditor, the Athens County Prosecutor’s office and Bolon." No further comment from the university. (link)
Verizon CEO McAdam was asked in Sun Valley if the rumors were true that his company was interested in a deal for Disney, "No." CBS boss Moonves, New England Patriots owner Kraft, Viacom vice chair Redstone & investment guru Buffet were a selection of executives who arrived in Idaho yesterday. Discovery boss Zaslav: "The challenge for all of us is to figure out which is the great content that people are going to want on all platforms...to figure out how to get more of our content and have a bigger market share on each of those platforms." (link)

Before last night's MLB All-Star Game, a contest full of international talent, Commish Manfred addressed the state of the game, specifically commenting on the length of games. The average time of nine-inning games this season has risen to 3 hours and 5 minutes, which would be the longest in history. Manfred: "Where it gets troubling, from a fan perspective, is tons and tons of strikeouts, no action, lots of pitching changes. That combination is troubling to me." (link); ESPN college baseball analyst & former Tennessee stand-out Burke during last night's All-Star Game, "So if my math/research is correct 12 out of 15 American born #AllStarGame2017 starters played College Baseball!" (link)

New Mexico Interim Prez Abdallah gives VP for Institutional Support Services Vallejos oversight duties of the athletic department's finances after the latest issue for the Lobos. Vallejos & members of his staff will do a thorough review of athletics in the next three to four weeks. Vallejos: "I think what’s happened in athletics, in NCAA athletics across the country, coaches and their administrators are so competitive. They stay focused on being competitive, and if they don’t get their equipment money and don’t get their uniform money, if they don’t get their traveling and recruiting money, they kind of say, 'Well, we’ll spend it, but you administrators go find it.'" (link); Part of the story in Albuquerque may be a result of the Lobos going over a year without a CFO since the exit of former Assoc. AD for Finance/CFO Marcelli in May of last year. (link)
While he doesn't officially start until later this month, newly hired Eastern Michigan AD Wetherbee is the featured AD in this fourth edition of a Q&A series with the Detroit News. On having big brother Michigan around the corner, "You know, I just don’t think we need to even compare ourselves to them. We’re focused on being the best in the Mid-American Conference, focused on trying to strengthen our brand within the region so people are proud of going to Eastern. I’m going to focus on what we can control. They (Michigan) are always going to be right there, I can’t move them. We’ll embrace that part of it." Says he will come in "eyes wide open" and get creative to boost attendance at Eagles games, especially football. Looks forward to returning to his home state and being closer to family. (link)
Old Dominion's budget numbers are on another level from C-USA peers, as in $10M more than runner-up North Texas, but still pale in comparison to 'Power 5' schools. The Virginian-Pilot's Minium puts it another way, "The Power 5 are like Amazon, gorging themselves on ever larger shares of revenue, while mid-major leagues fall further behind." Monarchs AD Selig agrees: "The Power 5 are getting new TV contacts and new revenue streams the rest of us can only dream about. It’s going to make it harder and harder for us to compete. Not just in football and basketball, but across the board." Adds, "It’s very difficult and very challenging. But no matter how much they spend, as long as the scholarship limits are untouched, they can’t corner the market on every athlete. There are enough outstanding athletes to go around." More. (link)
LEAD1 Association sat with McGuire Woods partner Phillips, who is an expert in employment law. Phillips reviews the Brown University case, in which a previous National Labor Relations Board decision was reversed to find that GAs are not employees, and the NLRB decision at Northwestern, to decline jurisdiction based on concerns of competitive balance, "Which is interesting because we don’t really see the Board being concerned about unions creating a competitive disadvantage in other industries although clearly employers believe that they do." Says the interpretation of how much time is spent obtaining a degree vs focusing on sports were key factors in both decisions."If athletes are employees, then what is compensable time? In other words, how do you define when an athlete is 'working?' Games and organized practices are pretty easy examples but what about when players are lifting weights at a university facility? What about if the quarterback and receivers on the football team are running routes at the stadium outside of practice? Players need to go to class to stay eligible so could that be compensable time." On potential tax implications, if student-athletes become employees: "Probably the Tax Code would need to be changed before the IRS could tax qualified scholarships as income or treat a college student as employed for employment tax purposes. But if student-athletes are receiving substantial compensation from their sports, that’s a possibility." Lots more, including his opinion that walk-on players would become a thing of the past if student-athletes fall into an employee classification. Cautions schools to keep an eye on the Dawson case in California, "potentially a very important ruling on the horizon that could shape this issue for years to come." (link)
Facility Upgrades: Texas Tech FB HC Kingsbury unveiled the newly-renovated locker room inside the Football Training Facility to his team on Monday evening. Pretty sharp. Link includes video. (link); The new FB performance center announced last month by Illinois AD Whitman will cost an estimated $79.2M. (link); At Wake Forest, new LED display upgrades are coming to Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which will be done by Daktronics. (link); Morgan State has selected Dak to provide new LED video displays at Hughes Stadium and Hill Field House. (link)
HC Notes: Former College of Charleston Baseball HC Heath files a lawsuit against the university in response to his dismissal. Claims he was not given a chance to appropriately defend himself against the allegations, says the reports of his behavior are "uncorroborated and false." Full filing within article. (link); Stanford Softball HC Hanson exits to become Executive Director at the Baseball and Softball Education Foundation (BASE) in St. Louis. (link); Cal State Bakersfield AD Siegfried promotes Interim Baseball HC Beard to the role on a permanent basis. (link); Alaska Fairbanks Men's Hockey HC Ferguson exits for the HC job with Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. (link); Pepperdine AD Potts moves longtime Men's Volleyball AC Hunt up to the HC spot. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Tennessee AD Currie says he "understands and embraces" what the Lady Vols brand means to so many UT supporters. Thinks he's done a lot of listening over his first 100 days, but points to the need for more on this sensitive topic. On the success of his initial Big Orange Caravan roadshow, "We wanted to get back to our roots as far as why we do this and why we do the caravan is because of the connectivity with our fans. We’ve had the best attendance we’ve had in years in Chattanooga and Memphis. [Monday’s] deal is completely sold out, I think we are closing in on 800-or-900 people [Tuesday] night in the Tri-cities." (link)
The Star Tribune's Souhan writes on how some Minnesota supporters will furl a brow at the new $11.2M 14-year deal for The 3M Arena at Mariucci naming rights deal, but, "I'm actually encouraged by the move. The athletic department desperately needs funds, to complete the Athletes Village and to support two programs with young coaches who could make it big." Further, "Mark Coyle has shown guts and initiative. The only way he could get away with firing Tracy Claeys after a resounding bowl victory was hiring the best candidate on the market. He did. [...] Tacking '3M' onto a familiar name is a small price to pay for a large check." (link)
Sun Herald columnist Cleveland pulls records from 1989 when Ole Miss' athletics budget was $8.5M, the top mark in the state. Compare that figure to the Rebels' $110.5M 2015-16 ledger, "If my math is correct, the Ole Miss and Mississippi State ($7.5M vs. $94.9M) athletic budgets are about 13 times larger than in 1989. Meanwhile, USM’s is about five times larger ($4.9M vs. $25.9M), JSU’s three times larger ($2.9M vs. $7.6M), and so on. In other words, the rich are getting richer — and much faster. And the poor are staying poor." More comparative data from 1989: Mississippi State AD Templeton was paid a base salary of $75K. Current MSU boss Cohen: $750K. (link)
Comment from Nike after Cornell decided to end its licensing relationship given labor concerns abroad, "We are deeply committed to protecting workers across our supply chain and have worked tirelessly to raise standards across the industry. Our Code of Conduct meets or exceeds international standards set by the International Labour Organization’s conventions and while it is not possible to implement individual codes for over 1,000 partner schools, we often find common ground that meets our shared expectations and enables us to move forward." (link); Portland Biz Journal's Kish: "While Cornell ended licensing deal with Nike, the university's athletes will continue to wear Nike, per agreement that runs through 2020." (link)
Media Blips: In a scheduling shift, the 2018 CAA MBB Championship will start on March 3 and the semifinals and finals will be broadcast on CBS Sports. (link); Hart, Rodgers, and Cubelic will be the SEC Network's prime time broadcast team this coming FB season. (link); Former ESPN analyst Schlereth has landed at Fox Sports 1 and will reportedly be a game analyst for Fox's NFL coverage. (link); The upcoming Olympic Channel, which will launch this weekend on a number of cable systems and streaming services, will air all eight of the Dream Team's games in the 1992 Olympics starting Aug. 28. (link)
Also Noticed: Cleveland State AD Thomas appointed to the DI Council to represent the Horizon League. (link); Southern Illinois will finally get a new Chancellor in University of Alberta leader Montemagno. (link); Bethune Cookman Prez Jackson announces his plans to retire. Exact date TBD. (link); One more item on the plate of West Virginia AD Lyons: "We’re trying to finish up some budget issues and fill a couple of positions internally here. I’m in the process of hiring a Chief Financial Officer since Mike Szul left for Rutgers. Dealing with those issues take a little time." (link); Kansas MBB HC Self says he expects the Jayhawks to play Missouri again at some point down the road, but his focus will always be what's best for KU. (link); KORE Software launches a business consulting division led by data expert/Prez Scibetti. Leveraging KORE's CRM or data warehousing are not required for engagements. (link); Northwestern adds a 2019 home FB game against UNLV. (link); Women Leaders in College Sports release details on three membership scholarships to be awarded to administrators at HBCU institutions. (link); Facebook rolls out Messenger advertising inventory around the the globe. (link)

Contributing 1.Q host Tai Brown starts with an interesting question for Northern Iowa AD David Harris, "How much did you stick to your original first 90-day plan once you actually began as a new AD?" Harris notes the need for flexibility, meeting as many key donors as possible & doing a lot of listening. Harris follows-up with his "non-negotiables" for any new AD to execute as quickly as possible during a new tenure. "The one thing you can't delay is the people part, the relationships." Listen by clicking the link. (link) (length - 5:42)
