St. Paul’s Needs You?
The most effective means of attracting newcomers to any church is a personal invitation from a parishioner. If this makes you nervous about being turned down, know that survey after survey shows that three-quarters of people say they would go to a church if a friend, neighbor, or co-worker invites them. The question is, "Do you have a church home?" And if the answer is no, just say, "St. Paul's means so much to me and my family, I would love it if you would visit with us sometime." It is that simple. In order to make the invitation even easier, we will have cards available which church members can share with those you want to invite to worship with you. The backside of the card will offer information about the church including the physical location, phone number, web address, and Sunday service times. We will bless the cards during Mass and invite members to pray about who to invite and then take cards with them. As a parish priest, I have service times on the back of my business card. That one small item often converts a conversation in the community to someone showing up for worship. We readily share restaurants, movies, and books with friends and co-workers. Why not also share your church with those you know and love? It is easier than you think.

Reflections:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

As Episcopalians we believe that we continue in the faith and practice of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I believe that the primary role of every Christian is to witness to the Resurrection. In answer to the call to witness, we must be willing to use the gifts God has given use to teach and be a person of prayer and identify and encouraging the gifts for ministry which our Lord has planted in all God’s children. Learning to be engaging and to listen to the needs of those God sends our way is our mutual call to servant ministry. It is important at all times to be alert to opportunities given to witness to our common life in Jesus Christ, especially with those intimately involved with the work and witness of the Gospel.

As servants of our Lord’s desire that all my be one in God, members of the Episcopal Church are called to cultivate the unique gifts available to everyone, thereby, encouraging each other to use those gifts collaboratively. In this way, we can make effective witness to the power of God to transform life in an anxious and alienated culture. The touch stone of those gifts is the balanced vision conveyed by the worship and teaching of the Book of Common Prayer. This life grounded in the prayer book includes a view of history that both informs our discipleship and encourages each of us to take an active role in the ministry of the church. Ours is a liturgical witness that is rooted in tradition while being flexible and responsive to the needs of various worshiping communities, with an approach to education which emphasizes God’s ongoing conversation with us.

A life of prayer rooted in the commitment to both the offices and daily Eucharist keeps me in the Gospel story with its life and disciple forming patterns. I invite you to take great joy in the experience of the opportunities our liturgies provide. At St. Paul’s this ranges from a simply said mass early on a weekday morning to the full expression of a sung liturgy on a Sunday. A day does not go by that you cannot participate in the worship of Almighty God. The richness and depth of our liturgical life together are something I love to share with you, make it your joy to share it with another.

I am fully committed to education in the lives of Christians of all ages. Each year that passes draws us deeper into the important and continuing conversation which we must have as a community of believers in a skeptical world. The most powerful posture we can take as witnesses to the truth of God in Jesus Christ is that of a servant. Humbling ourselves to serve the need of God’s Kingdom and each other allows us to see more clearly the gifts which the Holy Spirit provides. When immersed in the deep and rich heritage which is conveyed in the patterns of Prayer Book spirituality, word and sacrament provide us with a voice that is compelling and authentic. Think how you might share this gift with another.

During my tenure at St. Paul’s, we have moved from a stance of survival to becoming a hub of creative enablement in the parish, the convocation and the diocese, supporting mission work and providing leadership for two other congregations as well as supporting a college chaplaincy. In addition, the Holy Spirit has blessed our work with numerous opportunities to make common cause with people of other faith traditions and people of no faith tradition to address the ancient concerns of scripture for the poor and needy, the suffering and oppressed. In short, God has allowed us to participate in the extraordinary depth of love which is God’s for all creation. What more exciting work awaits us? Who may God be calling us to nurture their gifts and by doing so open a whole new pilgrimage of discovery? WWIII
