Chechens in Chains
The five Chechen men responsible for the murder of Boris Nemtsov have been handed their prison sentences by the Russian military court. Boris Nemtsov was a highly vocal Putin critic and served as deputy prime minister to Boris Yeltsin in the 90's. He was shot in 2015 while walking with his girlfriend in Moscow. Afghanistan
Afghan Girls Robotics Team
The Afghan girls robotics team will be allowed to travel to the United States to partake in an international robotics competition after their visa applications were denied twice. The initial rejection of the team's visa sparked international outcry where human rights activists raised questions regarding whether  U.S. agencies were retreating from previous efforts to advocate for young women in Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of State declined to comment on why the visa applications were initially denied. Joe Sestak, President of First Global, the organization hosting the competition, said "I truly believe our greatest power is the power to convene nations, to bring people together in the pursuit of a common goal and prove that our similarities greatly outweigh our differences."

Malta
Island Equality
The tiny island country in the Meditteranean has legalized same-sex unions. This comes as a surprise to the staunchly Catholic country that only in 2011 legalized divorce. Despite strong opposition from Malta's religious elite, Malta's Parliament voted 67-1 in favor of same-sex unions. Malta has become the 15th European country, and the second this year, to legalize same-sex marriage.

This map shows the European countries that have so far legalized all forms of same-sex unions. Click on the map to learn more.
