Recap: Trail Armoring

The Friends of Fort Harrison State Park conducted a trail improvement project on Wednesday, June 14th and 21st on a section of trail near the Duck Pond.

The volunteer crew prepared the trail surface with shovels and rakes and placed flat stone slabs that armor the trail to provide a mud-free walking path and slow down trail erosion. Many thanks to our hard working volunteers for their help in this much-needed trail project!

Recap: Harrison Trace Trimming

The Friends were out and about in June and July, working to trim back errant branches from the sides of Harrison Trace. Thanks to the hard work of our trimming crew, you are less likely to be tree-slapped while enjoying the Trace!

Recap: Garlic Mustard is busted!

Thank you, Friends of Fort Harrison members Dick and Carol Schwartz, for organizing numerous garlic mustard pulls this spring. Thanks to the efforts of the Dick, Carol, Lee Ann, Wilma, Kati, Rachel, another Rachel, Mitch,  Karen and the crew from Blue Ribbon Transport, it is estimated that over 1,000 pounds of mustard have been removed from FHSP this season.

Garlic mustard disposal fact: Garlic mustard will continue to produce seeds, even if pulled, much like a dandelion. Once pulled by the roots, garlic mustard should be placed in heavy duty trash bags and disposed of in a trash container.

Although we made a great dent in the population of invasive garlic mustard this year, we will be back at it again next spring.
