News Updates

July 2017

Dear Members & Supporters

Welcome to this busy Update:

2017 ASEA National Convention Update
Perth 19th to 22nd October 2017

Finding the balance: quality of life, quality of fluency

Is fluency and stutter free speech the main goal, the end game, for people who stutter?
How much energy should we put into our fluency compared with other aspects of our lives?
How do we support our friends and colleagues who stutter - at our support groups?
Do we tell them to slow down, use technique, concentrate, breathe and practise?
Do we take the time to really see how they are going? They may need support in other areas of their lives as people who stutter - not just with their fluency.

Quality of life is important for everyone, not just people who stutter, and this is a primary focus of the 2017 Convention. We have a great program including international expertise with Dr Scott Yaruss, leading Australian researchers in Dr Janet Beilby, Dr Charn Nang and Associate Professor Deborah Hersh, and many presentations on emerging research outcomes. To balance the equation and “find the balance”, specialist practitioners will provide their insights on wellness and resilience, mental wellbeing and mindfulness, self-care and self-help, and on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Our speakers span a wide spectrum - from consumers and self-help gurus to researchers and clinicians.
To view the draft, almost complete program, go to this link.
More detail on the speakers and their background profiles, is available by clicking on this link.
You will notice that there are still some speaking sessions available (15 minutes) and also one more keynote session. If you know of anyone who might be interested in presenting at the Convention, please drop me (Peter Dhu) an email: peter@peterdhu.com.au
Registrations are now open and Eventbrite is being used to process all ticketing.
It is a simple process - just go to the bookings webpage by clicking this link.
Full registration includes: A welcome function on Thursday evening, lunches and morning/afternoon teas, all conference sessions and the convention dinner on Friday night. At an early bird price of $270 ($250 for pensioners, students and concession card holders) it is cheaper than both Adelaide and Canberra, our two previous conventions.
Accommodation at the convention venue is very affordable. You can share a self-contained apartment with some friends and colleagues for around $50 per night. This price will offset the cost of flights and make it affordable to all Eastern States delegates. For those of you who want a little more luxury, the Superior Twin room or Superior Double room is available at $150 per night.

The groundwork is done and now we need your help and enthusiasm to share this information; to encourage other people from your support groups to register now. Why not team up with four or five of your friends and book an apartment so you can share the benefits of these cheap rates? Could each state branch and McGuire groups distribute this information to your friends and colleagues? The benefits of attending a convention far outweigh the costs. For many people these conventions become transformational, as we all strive for true quality of life for people who stutter and the broader community that supports them.

RESEARCH SUMMARY
During 2016 some SEAWA members volunteered to take part in a stuttering research study by Speech Pathology Honours student Alice Carter from Curtin University.
Alice was supervised by Associate Professors Janet Beilby and Lauren Breen.
The study title was:

Self-Efficacy and Quality of Life in Adults Who Stutter
Alice has kindly obtained permission for this news update to publish a brief results summary of her research study.
A copy of the summary can be viewed here.
Honours Research Project
Attention Regulation In Adults Who Stutter
~ Invitation to participate ~

What is the project about?
This is a supervised Honours degree student research project, which aims to investigate attention regulation abilities of adults who stutter compared to those who do not. Attention regulation is our ability to stay focused, change our focus of attention from one task to another, and ignore certain input when there is lots of incoming sensory information.

Who is doing the research?
The project is being conducted by Ashleigh O’Callaghan-Sear, who is a fourth year Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) student, under the supervision of Dr Janet Beilby and Britta Biedermann. There will be no costs to you and you will not be paid for participating in this project.

Why am I being asked to take part and what will I have to do?
We are looking for adults who have a diagnosed developmental stutter, and adults who do not have a diagnosed developmental stutter.
The study will take place in a quiet room at the Curtin University Stuttering Treatment Clinic. You will be required to complete a reading task, and two computer based activities.

What happens next and who can I contact about the research?
If you would like to find out more about this study please don’t hesitate to contact the student researcher Ashleigh O’Callaghan-Sear by phone 043 763 1205 or email
ashleigh.ocallagh@student.curtin.edu.au. Alternatively, you can direct any inquires you have to the supervisor of this project, Dr Janet Beilby (08 9266 7463; j.beilby@curtin.edu.au)
