Louisville may have to repay over $5M if last month's ruling by the NCAA Committee on Infractions is upheld, according to the Courier-Journal, which adds that it could take as much as four months for an appeals hearing to be scheduled, and even longer before a final decision is reached. Among the variables which cloud the total figure is UofL's participation in three conferences (Big East, AAC, ACC) during the time period the infractions occurred; specifically, it is unclear whether the Cardinals relinquished NCAA Tournament units when leaving the American. AAC officials declined to disclose that information, saying the conference does not discuss financial matters of former members. In addition, UofL is scheduled to receive 2015 NCAA Tournament revenue through 2021. The ACC accumulated over $24M in tourney revenue for 2017 which, distributed evenly among members, total $1.611M per university. (link)
Further, ESPN's Medcalf get comments from an unnamed former Committee on Infractions member on the current cases at Louisville & North Carolina, "We're kind of at a crossroads and trying to see what authority and jurisdiction the NCAA really has." More: "There was some sense the head coaches weren't taking the responsibility to educate and keep people in compliance. As far as I'm concerned, it was the one major change in the enforcement regime that has the potential to really make a difference. You're really going to get people's attention when you start imposing suspensions on people like Jim Boeheim and Larry Brown and Rick Pitino. It's a new regime." Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim doesn't believe punishing head coaches more severely will really stop bad behavior, "A coach is responsible for his program, but how far do you take that? If you should know, what should you know?" A bit more. (link)
Despite spending the formative years of his professional career in the Big Ten, newly minted Boston College AD Jarmond is familiar with the terrain in the ACC, having played MBB at UNC Wilmington, grown up in nearby Fayetteville and having parents who currently live in Raleigh. Asked if he had a favorite ACC team growing up, Jarmond responds: "You know, what I will tell you is that my favorite ACC team is Boston College." Jarmond also acknowledges that winning in the ACC means overcoming stiff competition: "It's harder. Competition is harder now to win and be really competitive at a high level in the ACC because of all the schools. There's so much talent top to bottom." (link)
Following a season in which Florida captured three national titles (Baseball, Men's T&F and Women's Tennis, all of which came in the final five weeks of the athletic season) and finished third in the Learfield Cup standings, AD Stricklin discusses his first year in Gainesville: "There’s a reason this is one of the premier athletic programs in the country. It’s because there’s incredible people you get to work with and you get a chance to impact the lives of young people who are as talented as anyone in the country at a university that’s one of the top-10 public institutions in America. ... You kind of know it from the outside, but once you get a chance to experience it up close, it just illustrates what makes this place so special." Stricklin is quick to acknowledge the work of former AD Foley, saying that "anyone knew whoever was going to be the next AD at Florida was going to be walking into a great situation because of the great job Jeremy did." Meanwhile, Foley expresses optimism for the program's future under Stricklin: "I think the best days in this program are ahead of us, and I think you have the right leader to take us there." (link)
Newly minted Central Michigan AD Alford tells The Detroit News that he will examine scheduling concerns regarding CMU's FB rivalry with Western Michigan, which this season is scheduled to kick off on a Wednesday. "Of course, you always want to provide the best experience for the student athletes and fans, and if that’s a Saturday, then that’s a Saturday. And if for our fans and student-athletes the best experience is on a Wednesday, then it’s on a Wednesday. It’s our job, no matter what we do, to keep the tradition and excitement around that rivalry." Alford also asserts that FB HC Bonamego is doing an "excellent job," adding: "He has great vision for the program. ... I like what he has to offer recruits coming in. I like his attitude and his staff. There's nothing but bright things ahead for our program." As for what makes him a good fit with CMU, Alford notes the vision of Prez Ross "and then the people, just the energy, the positive energy that people brought with them and talking about CMU. ... Their love for the university really came out, just the passion people have for CMU." (link)
Texas adds Corona Extra as its 'Official Import Beer' in a deal brokered by IMG College that comes with the tagline of, "Horns Up, Limes In!" First import beer deal in college athletics. Agreement centers around FB, Hoops, Baseball, hospitality, media exposure, tickets, a "Corona Beach House" near Darrel K. Royal-Memorial Stadium & more. (link); Oh, there's also customized tap handles. (link); With beer at ballgames continuing to expand around the nation & the craft beer craze gaining even more momentum, here's a good read from Fortune on the four mega-brewers who are scooping up craft brands one by one. Question: Is a beer still "craft" if owned by a conglomerate? (link)
Daily Republic columnist Izzo wonders whether the constant state of flux in which the Summit League has found itself in recent years should be viewed as a warning sign of a death knell. IUPUI's departure announced earlier this week makes it the sixth program to exit the league since 2010. Meanwhile, the geographical makeup of the league has skewed toward the Midwest, which Izzo notes has simultaneously raised the conference profile while putting IPFW "on an island," with its closest competitor, Western Illinois, a six-hour bus ride away. Mastodons AD Hartley Hutton has gone as far as to say the current composition of the conference has "compelled [them] to look at other options." Should they leave, Izzo points out, the Summit would be left with only five baseball teams, one short of the automatic qualifier minimum. Moving forward, Izzo notes several replacement options, including Grand Canyon, DII Augustana and former conference member UMKC. (link)
Wisconsin AD Alvarez names Assoc. AD for Business Development McIntosh as Deputy AD, replacing longtime Badgers leader Dickey. Alvarez: "It is important for us to continue to evaluate ourselves and make adjustments and evolve where necessary. I am always looking to put people into positions and give them responsibilities that are in the best interests of the department." Dickey will remain with UW and resume oversight of compliance and government affairs, as well as serve as liaison to legal affairs and co-liaison to the UW Athletic Board and the B1G. (link)
American Commish Aresco appoints Senior Assoc. Commish DeMarco to be the conference's next COO, effective July 1. DeMarco, who has served as senior associate commissioner since 2010, has been responsible for oversight of the conference office and staff in addition to serving as primary liaison to the AAC's 13 member institutions. Aresco: "Donna is a valued and respected member of my American senior staff and this recognition reflects her key role in the growth and success of the Conference. Her many years of experience as a senior administrator make her an important resource for our Conference and its member institutions. She will be a key figure as we continue to build and enhance The American’s brand." (link)

The International Olympic Committee sings the praises of both Paris & Los Angeles for their fine 2024 hosting bid proposals in advance of next week's meeting in Switzerland. Expectations have Paris getting the '24 Games & Los Angeles the '28 version in what would mark a first for dual awards, a break from the traditional announcement seven-years from an event. Paris hasn't hosted since 1924, LA since 1984. (link)

UCF releases a new strategic plan for the next five years titled, "The Knights' Charge." Mission Statement: "To positively transform the lives of our students academically, athletically and personally through a nationally competitive intercollegiate athletics program that enhances the reputation and visibility of the University." Vision: "To be Florida’s preeminent athletics program, representing UCF and our community with distinction on the national stage as 'Orlando’s Hometown Team.'" Core values: Student-Athlete success, integrity, partnership, inclusion & accountability. Priorities: Student-athlete success, resources, culture, competitive success, branding & messaging. AD White: "As I've said for the past year and a half, we plan to be aggressive and we aspire to be a Top 25 intercollegiate athletics program. The Knights' Charge gives us a map to follow as we continue building toward that goal." Lots, lots more. (link)
GoVols247's Rucker says last week new Tennessee AD Currie took his first day off in 86 days since starting in Knoxville. When asked if he thought starting the job in late spring would be an advantage in that it gave him several months before the fall sports seasons begin, Currie said "I’m not sure there is a perfect time. It’s not fun to leave a group right in the middle of a season, which is basically what I did right at the end of basketball season and right as K-State was getting ready to win the Big 12 in track on the women’s side, which was a great accomplishment for them. But the other thing is when the transition time comes, you make the transition, you pass the baton and you move on and accept it at a new place. I was really glad to get started. I actually started a couple of days before April 1, because I went to Memphis on the 31st and went right into it. I think I worked 86 straight days, and then I finally took a little time off and went to the beach with my family for a couple of days last week." Look for more GoVols247 spotlight coverage on Currie in the coming days, including a podcast interview. (link)
Late last month, former Georgia Southern co-OCs Dean and Gillespie each filed a lawsuit against the school's athletic association, HC Summers and several administrators, including AD Kleinlein. "The lawsuits allege breach of contract, fraud and tortious interference after the school failed to execute the 18-month contracts the coaches signed initially, then pressured them to sign shorter deals two days before their dismissal." The pair initially signed 18-month contracts on Jan. 27, 2016 that would take them through June 30, 2017, but halfway through the contracts learned that the school's Board of Regents and GSU Athletic Foundation never signed them. Summers arranged a second set of contracts in November that changed the ending date to Feb. 28, 2017. Both men accuse Senior Assoc. AD for Business Ops Blythe of strong-arming them to sign the new agreements and both seek monetary damages. (link)
Michigan FB HC Harbaugh's new YouTube channel has produced 20K+ minutes of viewing since launch last Friday, even though it only includes 65 seconds of total content at the moment. Football Scoop's Barnett connects the effort to marketplace studies by Defy Media & Variety that found the 13-24 age demo puts more stock in You Tube personalities than movie or TV celebrities. Creating authentic connections & deeper fan engagement are also prevalent for the biggest YouTube stars. (link - Harbaugh, link - studies)

The Wall Street Journal's Germano continues on marketplace changes for Nike as the leading footwear brand will "push the gas" on new releases & leverage more non-traditional sales channels to boost the bottom line. For example, the Swoosh recently debuted a limited edition shoe alongside headlining chef Chang & the units were sold only at Chang's restaurant in New York using an augmented reality app. Additionally, Nike still says it has the deepest roster of relationships with athletes & entertainers as Kanye West's connection to Adidas continues to generate press. (link); Another avenue where Nike looks to make a mark is selling kicks via Instagram. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
ESPN the Magazine writer Keating: "Why does it seem like nobody cares about female concussions?" Keating questions the content examined at the annual Concussion in Sport Group meetings, which in 2016 featured a "dozen sessions at the conference, not one was dedicated to sex or gender. Researchers made 24 oral presentations during the meetings; one focused on female athletes. Among the 202 research abstracts, nine, or less than 5 percent, studied women specifically. 'Gender hasn't been a hot, hot topic,' says one member of the" CSG. "The latest studies continue to find that women get brain injuries more often in sports also played by men. But, research into why and how is lagging to nonexistent, as are efforts to reverse the trend. Which means millions of female athletes are putting their brains at risk unnecessarily." Lots more here, including Keating's take on the NCAA's role: "Maybe the best indication of the NCAA's priorities is simply this: Its chief medical officer has a staff of seven to address college-age health and safety issues from mental health to sexual assault. Meanwhile, its compliance desk has more than 50 employees who police amateurism among athletes." (link)
As Oklahoma finishes construction on the $160M south endzone renovation at Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium and continues to make progress on the $7M Blake Griffin Performance Center, which will add over 18K square feet of training and BB court space, AD Castiglione says OU is pressing on with other facilities upgrades. At the forefront now are renovations to L. Dale Mitchell Park and the OU Softball Complex at $10M and $15M, respectively. Castiglione says OU is in the "quiet phase" of discussions with potential donors, noting that there are parties interested in both. Meanwhile, the school is developing master plans for other projects, including gymnastics, tennis and a potential upgrade to Memorial's west side. But, Castiglione explains that the economy will have to improve before the department is ready to launch a fundraising effort for such an expansive project. OU regents have, however, given the okay to develop master plans for Memorial's northeast corner, which will include an academic center. "Everything from academics to our career planning to how we evolve with the sports sciences -- our leadership and mental health and resources to anything we think we can put in place to help contribute to creating that kind of unique experience for [student-athletes]." (link)
Facebook has given the go-ahead on a documentary series on former UCLA MBB student-athlete Ball and his family. Awful Announcing calls it part of Facebook's strategy to be a destination for viewers seeking original content. Look for a series featuring former Dirty Jobs host Rowe, as well. VP of Media Partnerships Grudin: "Our goal is to make Facebook a place where people can come together around video. To help get there, we’re supporting a small group of partners and creators as they experiment with the kinds of shows you can build a community around — from sports to comedy to reality to gaming. We’re focused on episodic shows and helping all our partners understand what works across different verticals and topics." (link)
More Tech/Digital: Snapchat adds backdrops, "a discrete voice-filter option" & a way to add links to images called "Paperclip." Undoubtedly, Instagram will do the same today. (link); Ticketmaster Presence is a new device designed to allow ticket holders to tap their smartphones for entry into an event. Already in 32 venues, it's another effort by the company to eliminate the hassle of paper tix. Ticketmaster is also partnering with Lisnr on the tech front. (link); ADWEEK's Marshall believes Twitter's story is a marathon, not a sprint, communicates a bunch of engagement statistics & the ability for brands to make a big impression on the little blue bird platform. (link); Twitter, Facebook & Snapchat are vying for World Cup highlights from Fox for next year's event. (link)
Facilities: Ohio is getting ready to get moving on its new $6.49M home for student-athlete academic center, a space AD Schaus & new Prez Nellis believe is vital for the Bobcats. However, some student leaders in Athens continue to pushback. (link); Florida A&M's Bragg Stadium is on schedule for key upgrades planned by AD Overton. (link); Xavier's upgrades to the Cintas Center have been covered in this space before, but I hadn't seen the video within this piece of what the renovations will look like once finalized. (link)

Another from contributing host Tai Brown from the 2017 NACDA Convention last month in Orlando. In this segment, Delaware AD Chrissi Rawak reviews the value of experiential learning & looking outside the industry for examples of how to execute in a more effective manner.
