Hey <<First Name>>,

Hope you've had a great weekend. You're getting this on Friday morning for a reason - I want it to spark some thoughts on how you look at rest. Also, this episode is just shy of 30 minutes long, which is about double what I normally do. Sorry about that, but the topic just needed that much time to cover properly, and I thought it was too important to miss.

The Most Overlooked and Persistently Broken Commandment

When's the last time you felt rested? Not just got enough sleep, but where you felt connected to God and the people you love? When's the last time you spent an entire day devoted to enjoying good food or doing something you love? If you're like most people, you can't remember the last time. When we're on the go seven days a week, we're overlooking and breaking one of God's direct commands - the command to Sabbath rest. Wonder what that is or how to actually do it? Listen to this week's episode below.

Show Notes

Main idea: We were made for a rhythm of work and rest

What is Sabbath?

  • One of the ten commandments (see Ex. 20:8-11)
  • Sabbath is real rest, in harmony with with one another, our Creator, and all of creation. It’s a day to delight in the life you’ve carved out in partnership with God, to delight in the world around you, and to delight in God himself. Sabbath is a day to pull up a chair, sink into it, look back over the work of the last six days, and just enjoy.

Why we overlook the Sabbath

  • We were designed for a rhythm of work and rest, but we've settled for work and leisure - both of which are cheap substitutes
  • We don't trust God to help us get everything done in six days
  • We don't trust God to satisfy and fulfill us

How to start a Sabbath rhythm in your life

  • Convincing - Convince both yourself and your family that Sabbath is necessary and commanded
  • Planning - You can't experience rest without planning for it
  • Saying "no" - We have to say no to some good things so we can say yes to the best things
  • Almost no technology - No matter how good our technology is it can never produce the life-giving rest God designed us to experience
  • Worshiping - The Sabbath day is something designed to benefit us, yes, but more importantly it’s designed to bring God glory, and the way we bring God glory is by worshiping Him
  • Trusting - To find a life-giving rhythm of work and rest you have to come to a place where you trust God with your schedule, your family, your rest, and even your productivity
