A Note from the President

August, 2017

August is the culmination of hard work for the outdoor season -- USA Archery Nationals, ITAA State Championship, Duel in the Cornfield, and IAA Field State Championship.  Pick up your bow and choose where to send your arrows!

USAA Nationals - With nationals nearby, we have a pile of archers participating.  Last year several youth archers shared their thoughts and experiences with USAA Nationals.  I'd like to invite all of our youth archers to do that again.  Send me some notes about the event, and I'll pull them together into a special newsletter.  Last year's special newsletter even got shared around the USAA offices!

Make sure to get your last-minute sign-ups in for our ITAA Outdoor State Championship on Aug 12th.  We could use some help setting up the field that morning -- setting up targets and safety barriers.  Volunteers should arrive around 6:00 am.  We will -not- be holding the annual meeting that day, but info about that meeting will be sent soon.

The following weekend of Aug 19th, you can choose between the regional Duel in the Cornfield championship (in Ohio) or our state NFAA organization IAA State Field Championship in Joliet.

The time for judgement has finally arrived!  USA Archery is hosting a judge certification seminar in Chicago in September.  More details are below.

As we fly into the future, "shoot 'em straight."

USA Archery Judge Seminar - Sept 2-3

The time for judgement has finally arrived!  USA Archery is hosting a judge certification seminar in Chicago in September.  After a year of building interest and recruiting to build up our pool of judges to help keep our events running smoothly, here is the biggest step.  Our enthusiasm has convinced USA Archery to send their judge trainer to Chicago in September to certify new judges, and prepare people to become national-level judges.

What can a judge do?

It would be great for the ITAA community to have a large pool of training judges.  A trained judge can:
• Run a USA Archery sanctioned tournament, including national tournaments.
• Create a tournament atmosphere of confidence and consistency.
• Broaden the pool of judges for state tournaments, so everyone gets a chance to shoot a tournament, too.
• Be a rules mentor at a club to answer questions as archers prepare and train for tournaments.

What will the seminar cover?

This two-day seminar will cover a broad range of topics.  By covering the materials now, we can all be on the same page on the day of a tournament.
• Philosophy of Judging
• Communications with Organizers/Coaches/Archers
• Judges Responsibilities before, during and after the tournament
• Arrow Value Calling and Scoring procedures
• Indoor Scoring
• Equipment Inspection Procedures
• Rules - Where to find them and how to read them.

Day 1 is in the classroom, and Day 2 is at an archery range.

The goal of this seminar is to make sure that all judges across the country start on the same page, have the same training, and the same philosophy for judging.

Benefits to the ITAA

The 2017 ITAA Roadmap includes the goal of supporting larger, more varied tournaments in the community.  A big part of this is ensuring that we have a large pool of trained judges.  This seminar is a great way to establish a set of judges who can mentor additional judges as we grow.

What does it cost?

On its face, the seminar costs $150.  But, in recognition of the importance of certified judges, the ITAA Board is offering a grant program to reimburse that seminar fee.  We are extending 10 grants to judges who successfully complete the judging seminar, judge two ITAA State Championship events, and act as judge mentors within their clubs and the ITAA community.  This fee will be reimbursed after the judged tournaments are completed.

Folks interested in this grant program should contact Tony. (tk@illinoistargetarchery.org)

More info will be posted to the ITAA web site, as well.

ITAA Outdoor State Championship - August 12th

ITAA Outdoor State Championship - August 12th

This is our annual Outdoor State Championship event for all ages.  Everyone young and old is welcome for this event for the crowning of our outdoor state champions.  We've made two changes for this year.  The event will be at a new venue at the Medinah Park District.  The format this year is a standard 720 Round at each category's nationals distance.  Registration will close soon, and there's plenty of space everyone this year.

In the interest of making sure everyone can experience the state tournament, we are including several modified categories.  We are adding a 10 meter and 20 meter novice divisions for folks who want to even when they can't necessarily shoot as far as the nationals format would require.  If you are interested in shooting in this division, send Tony an email.

We would highly appreciate some extra hands setting up and tearing down the event.  Set-up volunteers should arrive by 6:00AM Saturday morning.

More information and registration are here.

Weekend -- August 19th-20th

On August 19th & 20th, 2017

The state NFAA organization, the Illinois Archery Association (IAA) is hosting their state Field Archery championship in Joliet.

This is 28 targets on Saturday, and 28 targets on Sunday, so it's a full weekend of hiking and archery.

More info and registration are available on the IAA web site.

DUEL IN THE CORNFIELD

On August 19th & 20th, 2017

ACE Archery in Oregon, Ohio is hosting the regional target championship for the Northern Region.

This two-day dual 720 is not only the championship for the group of states that make up USA Archery northern region, but the scores will also be tabulated for the Duel In the Cornfield championship.

Duel in the Cornfield takes the highest two compound and highest two recurve scores from each state, and awards prizes to the winning states.

More info and registration is over here.
