Comms from the Commodore - Mostly concerning Weed
Watery Matters - Weed
Despite my upbeat article in the last newsletter the weed has continued to grow with a vengeance this year, so much so that it is now growing faster than we can cut it with our stalwart team of volunteers headed up by Barry Bennett – great thanks to all our volunteers.
A combination of bright sunlight, high water temperature, little algae and lack of wind have all encouraged exceptional and continued weed growth this year. We are not alone as we are receiving similar reports from other clubs
We are exploring other options with Natural England to ensure that we can keep sailing and have engaged contractors to trawl and rake the weed on the bottom of the lake. This should reduce the viability of the weed and retard growth thus enabling us to better control the weed into the future. Again we are being told that chemicals and dyes are not available for our SSSI Site of Special Scientific Interet - but we continue to explore all available options.
The contractors will be on site for the next week or so and you are asked to keep clear of their operations whilst they are working.
Ladies Who Launch (the Weedcutter that is!)
PSC is pleased to announce our first two female recruits to the Weedcutter team, namely Sue Irons and Karen Fredborg – congratulations and welcome aboard.
If anyone else wants to join the cutting team please contact me directly on frankbrown1@ntlworld.com to arrange the necessary training
