FUND RESEARCH, FIND A CURE
An update from Cancer in Kids @ RCH
July 2017
  New Project for CIKA

CIKA has begun funding a new project.
"Molecular Characterisation of Paediatric Brain Tumours"

This project is focused on studying and testing paediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumours. This project is needed if researchers are to understand the molecular basis of childhood CNS cancer.  The goal is to improve diagnosis of these tumours and to apply the findings of the study to design improved therapies.

We particularly acknowledge the generous contribution from
Pippa's Trust DIPG326.
Support such as this enables CIKA to continue to the fight against childhood cancer.

CIKA Stalls

Always a team effort!

The stalls continue to go from strength to strength.
Thanks to the work of Ruth, Pam, Sala, Leah and Ruth, and their teams, thousands of dollars have been raised.  Staff and long term families at the RCH know the value to be obtained at the CIKA stalls where beautifully packaged goods are always available.  Visitors to the Trentham Sunday Market are also great supporters, seemingly undeterred by the chilly winter weather!

Fantastic Focus

The Macedon Ranges Focus Group has been a staunch supporter of CIKA for many years. Their next luncheon will take place on Wednesday, 19 July, at the Highlands Hotel, Corner Aitken Blvd and Grand Blvd, Craigieburn. The cost is $25 per head which includes morning tea and lunch.

By Jonathon Fish, MD
  1. Over 80% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured, joining the growing population of long-term childhood cancer survivors.
  2.  As survivors age, they experience health problems years or decades earlier than their peers.
  3. In addition to the risks to physical health, many survivors experience depression and anxiety, with some meeting criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder.
  4. As researchers have learned more about the late effects of cancer treatment, this has had an impact on how doctors treat children newly diagnosed with cancer.
  5. More time is being dedicated to survivorship care.

Bendigo Posties Support CIKA

Bendigo "Posties" have come on board to support CIKA. Following a presentation by Ruth Edelsten in late June, a large group of Bendigo "Posties" have committed to raise funds for CIKA this year. Thank you Ruth for taking this initiative, and a big thank you to the Australia Post workers in Bendigo.

Who are you helping?

Young people like Sam, diagnosed with a Ewings Sarcoma in 1994.  After intensive chemotherapy and surgery he is now married with a family of his own.  Sam and his family are committed to the work of CIKA because they know that continuing to fund research is the only way to beat childhood cancer.
