The notable Jon Solomon writes for Athlon Sports on the impact of Wakeyleaks within the FB coaching community, a group already known for its paranoia. Miami (FL) HC Richt, Colorado boss MacIntyre, former LSU/Vandy/Indiana HC DiNardo & former UCLA/Washington/Colorado HC Neuheisel all comment on getting burned by allowing the media to record practice footage & the extreme competitiveness of the business that leads to coaches protecting every angle of strategy. Neuheisel: "I don’t know if people realize this or not, but if you lose a head job, it’s hard to get back. I think as salaries are going up and expectations go up with them, you’re not going to be careless." Even a hotel with windows facing the new FB practice facility at UCLA gets examined. Neuheisel also jokes that Nebraska HC Riley, because he's "the nicest guy in the world," could get any legislation passed. Lots more. (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt during an Alumni Association event in San Angelo: "Right or wrong, we're judged a lot of times by the success of our football program. That's the way it is. It's unique in the American culture within higher education that a sport, especially like football, sets the tone for so many things. And I want to tell you today that I can't wait for this season to kick off. […] We'll know the trajectory of the progress that we've made between last year and this year as we work through this football season. I'm very optimistic that we're going to make tremendous progress and this is going to be a successful year." Also, calls his chairmanship of the College FB Playoff Committee "an honor and a privilege," excited to never miss a FB practice again with the new Sports Performance Center that's coming online. (link)
Another good name to see on the masthead again, Dana O'Neil, pens for the Washington Post on, "Penn State’s road back, five years after NCAA sanctions." O'Neil points to the 2012 squad under then-HC O'Brien, along with a litany of letter winners, held the program together amid the Sandusky saga. The Nittany Lions' 8-4 finish that year identified as the tipping point for securing the commitments of key recruits who have continued to raise the profile of the program under HC Franklin. Former student-athlete & team leader Zettel: "That game (PSU over Ohio State last year), the Rose Bowl, all of it, it wouldn’t have even been a dream if we didn’t hold the program together. We all believed that if we stayed we would do something even bigger than winning a national championship. Watching that game, that’s all I could think about." More. (link)
Georgia AD McGarity inked his latest updates to Bulldogs fans earlier in the week, starting with an outline on the $55M raised by his department in FY17. Says he'll start to produce a "weekly, in-depth note to all donors" next month as FB slate approaches as a way to "educate and inform all fans of what to expect from a fan experience standpoint for the season." McGarity also runs through a litany of on- and off-field accomplishments by UGA student-athletes over the past few months. (link)
It's a good time to be a ticket seller in the Centennial State as both Colorado & Colorado State have seen solid gains for FB season ticket purchases. The Buffs are up to 19,353 (+1,342 year over year) to date & the Rams have surged to over 17K account holders (+3K). CU Assoc. AD of External Affairs/CMO Biggers: "The fan excitement and that energy when the team is coming off a winning year after 10 years of not winning has just been tremendous. People are really excited to get on board." CSU AD Parker: "We went through a process in the spring and transitioned everyone that was a season-ticket holder in (2016) into the stadium through a seat-selection process that was very, very successful." (link)
Oregon continues to push on the same front in its quest to get back to the 37,404 season tickets sold last year. The Ducks stood at 35,643 on Wednesday. Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Public Relations Pintens says equaling 2016 is still in sight, but there's still work to do in the final six weeks before opening kick. The equivalent of 1,312 season tix have been sold via mini-plans & are not reflected in the overall numbers. Some new perks for season ticket holders: $5 concession voucher, invitation to second-annual movie night at Autzen Stadium, early access to equipment surplus sale. Average renewal price down by 3.9%. Home slate includes Nebraska, Utah, Oregon State. More. (link)
There's discussion in Nashville about building a new $175M - $250M stadium to attract an MLS expansion club that would also be shared by Vanderbilt FB. The Tennessean's Rexrode is not a proponent, "Vandy jumping aboard is a creative way to solve two problems. But sports in this city as a whole will be better off if the MLS pursuit goes on and succeeds without Vanderbilt. Because if this happens it will weaken Vanderbilt football. […] I can imagine the conversations that will take place when a prospective recruit tours Vanderbilt’s modest football building and then has to take a ride out to the stadium where he’s being asked to play, which has MLS signage all over it and a soccer team practicing in it. I can point to the consistent failure of off-campus stadiums in college football. I can envision the empty seats on the bus dispatched to bring Vanderbilt students from campus to football games." (link)

NFL's Sunday Ticket & Red Zone options in Canada will only be available via DAZN ("Da Zone") over the next five years as cable & satellite companies were boxed out. Here's the kicker: A $20 monthly price point or a one-time $150 payment. DAZN Managing Director Rice compares his platform to Netflix, but notes that games can still be experienced on connected TVs. (link); The Mountain West will again leverage Facebook Live at its FB media days next week. Quinnipiac's competitive portfolio is quite healthy with a litany of conference championships last year, plus Men's Hockey winning 132 games in the past five years, tops in the nation. AD Amodio: "You know we're always trying to get people to understand we're as hidden a gem as I think you can find on the East Coast or the Northeast corridor." Two National Championship appearance for Men's Hockey, plus the run to the Sweet 16 by WBB has allowed QU to tell its story to a wide audience in the past handful of years. More Amodio: "We want to look like an Atlantic 10, Big East school. [...] We can be what Gonzaga's been in their conference or what Butler was or what Davidson was in their respective conferences. That should be our initial, aspirational goal, to be as a great as we can be, win on a consistent basis and then all the other things will take care of themselves." (link)
First-year 37-year-old Morgan State AD Scott: "I tell our student athletes, 'I’m old enough to know better but young enough to know your world.'" Facility upgrades & strategic partnerships have been early markers of success for Scott's tenure as he looks to increase the spotlight on the Bears. "As A.D. you’re always looking for ideas that have worked at other places around the country. When you’re new you’ve got to collaborate with other departments and demonstrate shared values across campus." (link)
It's Personnel: Georgia AD McGarity promotes Assoc. AD for Business Operations Ransom to Executive Assoc. AD. Compensation jumps from $108K to $175K. (link); Another exit at Cal as Executive Director of University Business Partnerships Fulp heads to Learfield to lead its Campus+ vertical. (link); Virginia Tech AD Babcock recruits Illinois Assoc. AD for Marketing/Fan Engagement Wurthman to join the Hokies team as the new Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations. (link); Navy AD Gladchuk is the new Committee on Athletic Administration chair for the Patriot League. (link)
Texas A&M FB HC Sumlin took exception to comments by the SEC Network's Rodgers after he said the Aggies boss looked "defeated" during SEC Media Days. Sumlin: "Let me tell you, I heard about this. The guy who said it was a quarterback at Vanderbilt. We won more games in two years than he won in his whole damn career at Vanderbilt." Good for Sumlin. (link)
More HC Notes: NYT's Crouse writes on the challenge for Stanford Women's Swim HC Meehan to keep world class student-athletes, like recent Olympics stud Ledecky, sharp & motivated. National team director Busch told Meehan he better not mess Ledecky up. Meehan: "I said to him, 'I know you’re not actually joking.' The enormity of the pressure is almost overwhelming, and that comes with the territory." (link); Staying in the pool, Georgia Swim HC Bauerle's pay is set to increase $130K to $380K. Women's Track & Field HC Kyprianou from $160K to $280K. (link); Closing the book on the College of Charleston Baseball HC search, "#CofC AD Matt Roberts says there was "unified support" for Holbrook on search committee despite topsy-turvy nature of search." (link)
AthleticDirectorU: Arkansas Asst. Dean & Assoc. Professor of Recreation & Sport Dittmore reviews the decision by South Carolina to rebrand its Media Relations. Dittmore takes a look how others in the SEC, Big Ten & Pac-12 have approached the changing media landscape. "What I found that I had NOT expected was the prevalence of 'Strategic Communications' in individual titles (n=9), despite only two schools (Penn State and Missouri) naming their units 'Strategic Communications'. Six of those with that title work at schools in the Big Ten Conference (Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers), two in the SEC (Arkansas and Missouri) and only one (California) in the Pac-12. [...] The growing usage of 'Strategic Communications', coupled with 'External' titles suggests athletic directors recognize a need to bring together the multiple internal units which aid in dissemination of news and information." Follow-up on the exit of Ole Miss FB HC Freeze: Former UNLV/Arizona/Washington State AD Livengood believes Freeze will coach again, "They all coach again [...] Because he won. You better win." (link); USA Today's Wolken: "Things can change quickly in college athletics, when the small slice of someone’s life that fans wanted to believe in begins to look more and more like the lie. In the end, those skeptical of Freeze turned out to be correct and the hard lesson was learned again. They’re just football coaches. Some are better men than others, better teachers, better disciplinarians, better husbands. But when we judge them and embrace them, all we can really know is the part we see for three hours every Saturday." (link); USA Today's Schroeder does not believe Freeze's exit will help the NCAA situation hanging over the Rebels. (link); Of course, there's already speculation on who might be the next permanent HC for Ole Miss. SI's Feldman mentions interim HC Luke, UTSA's Wilson, Memphis HC Norvell, Arkansas State HC Anderson, SMU's Morris, Troy's Brown, Air Force's Calhoun & Appalachian State HC Satterfield. (link)
Iowa State Senator Bisignano on the strong fundraising year for Iowa Athletics in the face of state budget cuts for higher ed, "I understand when they say that they are separate entities — and I understand the reasons for the division and that athletics is self-supporting — but it's all part of the identity of the university. I understand that those are different issues, but they aren't different to the public. […] Money is money." Other politicians from both sides of the table say all options should be on the table to balance the higher ed situation. Some point to the renovations to Kinnick Stadium & recent lawsuit settlements as problematic in the public eye. More. (link)
Former Indiana Senior Assoc. AD for Administration & External Alliances Neuburger, who is the new Stadium Director of Lucas Oil Stadium, says he's ready for the challenge of making sure the venue doesn't lose a step at its 10-year mark. Attracting two super high-profile concerts per year, like the one he inked with U2, is part of the plan. Indiana AD Glass was instrumental in the plan to build Lucas Oil & says the grand vision was a venue that would have national influence for at least 30 years. Another Super Bowl would be a major boon, may be a challenge to land. (link)
UT Chattanooga is the latest to add non-traditional premium seating options with the installation & servicing of eight tents on the west end of the stadium that will each include 12 tickets, electric, TV with cable, WiFi, etc. Season price: $5,000. Signage can be added for an additional $3,500. Looks like the tents may also be sold on a single game basis. (link)
VICE Sports is the latest casualty in the shifting sports media ecosystem as it's jettisoned for more video from parent company VICE. (link); Eye-opening comScore study: "...online ads targeted toward millennials have to be around 5 to 6 seconds to be effective, a sharp contrast from the traditional 30-second commercial seen on TV." comScore CEO Fulgoni: "You're going to have to make your case literally in a matter of seconds and make sure you grab somebody's attention." (link)
