Messages from the Office

Core unit standards are out for consultation
NZQA have released the Core unit standards for the Outdoor Leadership qualification suite.  It is important to take the time to look through these unit standards and provide feedback as these will shape the future of outdoor qualifications.  The Skills Active TRoQ team is seeking feedback on the programme structure, Core unit standard detail and general programme guidance and conditions. Each programme will be made up of Core unit standards and activity specific unit standards (e.g. Rock, Bush, Abseil etc.)  The core must be achieved by all graduates regardless of their activity specialty and therefore have been written so they can be included in each specific activity.

Consultation closes 5 pm Monday 31 July 2017.  Click here to provide feedback.  NZOIA is also keen to hear what you have to say so please drop us a line with a summary of your feedback.

Let's Celebrate

Nominations are open for the 2017 NZRA Outdoor Awards

There are many great stories in outdoor recreation just waiting to be told.  The NZRA Outdoor Awards are your opportunity to celebrate those successes and nominate individuals and organisations that are valued and effective members of the outdoors community.  The Awards are an important means of recognising the size and diversity of the outdoor recreation sector and provide an opportunity for outdoor individuals and organisations to be rewarded, recognised and for us to celebrate their contribution.  Nominations are open until 4 August 2017 and NZRA will be awarding the following accolades:

  • Outstanding Volunteer Award
  • Outstanding Event Award
  • Outstanding Programme Award
  • Organisational Excellence Award
  • Environmental Leadership Award
  • Supreme Award

Winners will be announced at the Outdoors Forum dinner in Wellington on the evening of Monday 4 September 2017.  Don't be shy, lets recognise what members of NZOIA and their organisations do for our industry and the people of New Zealand.  You can nominate and find more information here: http://bit.ly/OutdoorAwards

FAQ

Q: What's hot in the world of caving?

A:
NZOIA member Neil Silverwood is launching a new book called Caves: Exploring New Zealand's Subterranean Wilderness in Nelson this weekend.  The theme behind the book was to change the perspectives on caving and showcase how amazing the underground world can be.  It's not just about grovelling around in the mud.  The book is being launched at Fairfield House in Nelson on Saturday.  It will be available from bookstores on Monday.

Well there is snow everywhere but here!  Hope you're all getting out there amongst it.  I have enjoyed 6 days of skiing without a plate in my leg for the first time in 18 months - yippee!  Great to bump into heaps of NZOIA members while out there.
