BEAT THIS HAS MOVED!
It was in January 2017 we took on the lease of the unit next door to Chime Creation Centre (Unit A) and started to develop what we have envisioned since the beginning of this incredible journey; a fully fir-for-purpose Community Music Centre in the heart of our hometown Peterborough.  As you can see it was a completely seperate unit until we decided to make lots of mess and smash through the walls (courtesy of a very reasonable Landlord and a very powerful drill), adding windows and doors so as to essentially make into one facility.

What's happened to the old office? I hear you ask, well we're not there anymore!  We have built a modestly sized but lovely office cum training suite within the building itself so over the last month we
have been shifting more stuff than we thought we had, giving away things we certainly didn't
need and settling in to the new space, it's cosy and we love it!
Several heroic volunteers have been tirelessly working day and night to assist in this terrific transformation,
it would not have been possible if it were not for their efforts.

We have also been very fortunate to recieve donations from Perkins Engines, Santander, Persimmion Homes and the Olive And Jesse Palmer fund through Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.  The funding we received form these organisations has so far enabled us to build the office/trianing room and make a very sure start on
transforming the rest of the building.
We still have a way to go yet! The next phase is to hang another acoustic door, finish soundproofing the rest of the bigger space, build a bespoke voiceover and recording booth and performance stage.  We also have to kit it all out with a range of Assistive and Interactive Music technology and much more..

THE CAREERS SHOWDOWN

Organised by The Peterborough Skills Service, the annual Careers Show aims to showcase the extremely wide range of career opportunities on offer in the local area to 14-24 year olds, providing the chance to try out different things and talk to employers from all sectors.

We were invited by Peterborough Music Hub to attend the annual Careers Show on 27th July at the Peterborough Arena where we had a space in the "Creative Zone" to setup lots of musical gadgets and gizmo's and presented info and offered advice and guidance about the world of Community Music for young people to get involved with.

The Arena was buzzing on s record-breaking numbers of young people from across the region found inspiration for their future careers, attracting over 6,000 visitors and 230 exhibitors.

As you can see we had a great deal of interest from the young people of The Voyager School and in Xidus Pain our resident poet, lyricist and rapper.

THE LAVA LAMP IS BACK!

Yes you read it correctly, The Lava Lamp Nightclub has made a triumphant return folks! We have been supporting the only nightclub in town run by and for adults with additional needs since it began back in 2007.  Last year things took a surprising turn as the venue it was based at
closed down after the event on Christmas.

So the committee have been working really hard to find a new venue and after 6 months
they have succeeded! Club Caliente in Parnwell is the new home for the Lava Lamp
and the first event on 6th July was a roaring success!

Over 100 people made it to the new venue to see 5 new DJ's (trained and mentored by our team)
and to have a ruddy good boogy! You can expect a lot more from the Lava Lamp, the next event
will be held on Thursday 26th October.

If you or anybody you know is interested in becoming a DJ or volunteer at the next event please contact Benny on 07513 360050 or email benny@beatthis.org.

IN THE STUDIO WITH THE LIGHTERS

Recently our work experience volunteer Euan interviewed the Lavalamp Lighters about what they have been up to of late...

First of all Happy Birthday to Natasha who turned that magical year older on July the 6th.

The band recently did a gig at Central Park, they said that they enjoyed it and were happy to do it again as well as Stamford college and Fab Club. The band are currently in the middle of writing two new songs for their new EP these are written by Jeremy (Bass) and Martin (Keyboard).

The band also recently took part in a drum learning session with DrumSense's Steve Burge who taught them all about drums. Recently Enzo and Natasha attended a drum clinic and told us about some special drumsticks that he saw, these drumsticks help people with limited hand and
arm movement as they have special pivot points
so the drumsticks essentially do all the work.

PETERBOROUGH MUSIC HUB

The Peterborough Music Education Hub was established as a result of the National Plan for Music Education and is funded by the Arts Council England.

The organisation is dedicated to making an enjoyable and successful music education accessible
to all young people irrespective of their ability to pay.

The Music Hub also seeks to lift the barriers that arise through language,
educational, social or cultural issues.

Peterborough Music Hub’s work is guided by The National Plan for Music Education 2011.

The plan states that:

Children from all backgrounds and every part of England should have the opportunity:

CHRIS HUNT
(A.K.A THE SHADOW)

Our Work Experience Volunteer Euan asked Chris Hunt The lead singer from the LavaLamp Lighters and upcoming solo artist, a few questions about himself and his love for making and performing music.

When did you first start listening to music, and did it make you want to produce music?
I started listening to the odd song on my phone and for a long time i wanted to learn the guitar but i was never able to do it. Then the oppertunity came up to be in a band and kind of dove right in.
So when did you first start producing music?
Enzo who plays drums in the lavalamp lighters came up to me and asked do you want to make music, so i came along and had a chat with the band, and the rest is history.
What instrument do you play within the band?
I don't play instruments, i mainly sing and songwrite.
How many Albums have you produced?
With the Lavalamp lighters we've produced one EP and are working on our second one at the moment, as a solo artist i am currently working on my first Album.
What was it like when you first started recording your own music?
I was very nervous when I went into the studio with Benny for the first time because i didn't know whether my vocals were going to be alright or how the recording was going to go.
What was your first song about?
My first song is called Asperger Syndrome's a gift, which is all about how people think that people with Asperger's Syndrome is so negative when instead it can have so many positives.
Last question, what is the song which you are currently working on about?
My song at the moment is all about discrimination and how i want to completely wipe it out via my music, i hope my music can deliver what I've written. Benny my producer and I have got a lot more songs in the bag so watch this space guys!

You can check out Chris' music on his very own Bandcamp page.

BEAT ORCHESTRA UPDATE

After a successful run of past workshops and performances, The Beat Orchestra has been busy behind the scenes organising the youth led work to continue providing large scale music and performances for the youth of Peterborough. We are now looking for young musicians, from all walks of life, to help shape the Orchestra into a true youth orchestra, this means you call the shot and make the music!

Whatever your preferred genre of music or ability, We're looking to grow the Beat Orchestra once again, with Musicians, Producers, Singers, Rappers, Beat-boxers and Instrumentalists aged 13-25, who are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people, making and performing music as a large ensemble. You will have the chance to record in a professional studioenvironment and perform at future city events and festivals.

Music professionals are on hand to help you transform your musical ideas into tracks that a
diverse group of instruments and musicians can play.

Here's a short video of one of the songs performed as part of the 2013 Peterborough Festival in
