The Scot Knot - August 2017

Dr. Melanie TuckerWelcome, new families!

Welcome to the Fall 2017 semester. On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, I am thrilled to welcome you and your student to our Scots Family! All of us at Maryville College value the trust you place in us, and we sustain a genuine commitment to helping students experience success on and off our campus.

As I move through my first year as Vice President and Dean of Students at Maryville College, I am inspired by the community of care evidenced across our beautiful campus. The passion for learning evidenced by our faculty, students and staff inspires me to further our focus on access and inclusion, while helping students reach their fullest potential. I am impressed by our students on a daily basis. Their caring, compassion and capacity to change the world around them influences how and why we do the work we do!

I am confident the Class of 2021 will find academic rigor, supportive and engaged faculty and staff, friends from around the world, and co-curricular activities that supplement classroom learning at Maryville College. This time of transition in new students’ lives can often bring about opportunities for growth in unexpected ways. Know that we are here to help students successfully engage with the campus community. If you believe my staff or I can be of assistance now or in the months ahead, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I look forward to seeing our new and returning students on campus soon!

With Scots pride!

Sincerely,

Melanie V. Tucker, Ed.D
Vice President and Dean of Students
Chief Diversity Officer

Student Affairs: Student Services at MC

As a residential college with a strong sense of community, MC provides a wide range of student services, from academics to dining services, career and graduate school assessment, counseling, fitness, health and security offices. For more information about these important services, visit the “Student Services” section of the MC website.

Student Affairs: New Student Orientation

Orientation groupAll new Maryville College students participate in an orientation program that has been carefully designed to meet their particular needs and has two basic objectives: to connect new students to a peer group within the MC community and to acquaint new students with how things work at MC. Participation in the new student orientation program is a requirement for all incoming new students, and we believe it eases their transition into Maryville College. If you have a student starting at MC this fall, be sure he or she knows which days his or her orientation activities are scheduled. Read more about orientation on the MC website.

Academic Affairs: Enrollment Confirmation

All students are REQUIRED to confirm their enrollment at the beginning of each semester. A list of required forms/tasks will be available on The Tartan beginning Aug. 10. Students who complete all requirements before Aug. 24 will not have to confirm their enrollment in person. Those who do not meet the deadline will complete remaining items in Fayerweather 205 on Mon., Aug. 28. Further details about the process and instructions for completion will be sent to all students' "my.maryvillecollege.edu" email addresses on Thurs., Aug. 10. Questions about this event may be directed to Denise Cantrell.

Human Resources: Student Employment Meeting

A Student Employment Informational Meeting is scheduled for Thurs., Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in Pearsons Hall’s Proffitt Dining Room. At this meeting, students will learn how to look for on-campus employment for both federal work study positions and also jobs that are not linked to the federal work study program. Representatives from the Career Center, Financial Aid and Human Resources will lead the session. Once hired, students will need to provide originals of documents (no copies) to certify the federal I-9 form. Examples include a driver’s license, birth certificate, Social Security card, and a U.S. passport, among others. See the full list of acceptable documents. Maryville College is an equal opportunity employer and also an E-Verify employer.

Student Affairs: Meal Plans & Flex Dollars

Flex Dollars can be used like cash for discounted purchases at any of our dining locations: Isaac’s Café, the Scots C-Store and Pearsons Dining Hall. View our meal plan and Flex Dollar levels. Academics: Advising/Course Registration for First-Year Students

Faculty member advising studentAll first-year students (freshmen) are contacted by email during the summer and encouraged to begin selecting courses for the fall semester. Students are notified of a list of required and recommended courses based on their major or fields of interest. During Great Beginnings (June/July), each student meets with a faculty advisor to finalize this schedule and ask questions. During Orientation (August), first-year students will meet with their faculty advisors to reconfirm the schedule, make any adjustments and confirm that the courses fit their personal academic and career goals. All first-year students are advised by their First Year Seminar (FYS 110) instructors during their first semester at Maryville College, so students have frequent contact with their advisors and know whom to contact regarding questions about academic advising, course selection, tutoring and other topics.

Campus parking sign

Student Affairs: Vehicle Registration

The online vehicle registration form must be completed by all Maryville College students, regardless of whether or not they have a vehicle on campus. This lets us know who has a car and who does not (and who needs a parking decal).

Convocation ceremony

Academic Affairs: Convocation 2017

The theme of Maryville College’s 2017 Convocation ceremony is “Planning to Act.” The ceremony, which marks the opening of the 2017-18 academic year, will be held on Thurs., August 31 at 11:15 a.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre and is open to the public.

Financial Aid: Federal Work Study

If your student has been offered federal work study, then he or she is eligible to apply for a work study position. To confirm that the student qualifies, you will want to check the student’s financial aid package through the Online Financial Aid System. Students can view job openings and apply for positions starting Aug. 30 through our Handshake job board and will be interviewed if they are a top candidate. As a reminder, participation in the federal work study program is not guaranteed, and students cannot work more than 20 hours a week.
