Dear Friends:

Smalls has always been a haven for all creatures.  Besides jazz musicians, poets, painters, late-night dwellers, addicts, neurotics and unusual humans there has also been some "Spiritus Animalis" who have found their home in our basement.  Those of you who can remember back to the original days of Smalls will remember the wonderful Snow, a pure white Simoyan, who was the clubs first mascot.  Snow was incredibly intelligent and would confidently walk through the club making sure everything was ok.  She would patiently let everyone pet (and praise) her and then would take her place at the top of the steps to sit proudly with Mitch at the front door - guardian, host and protecting being.  After Snow passed away (a sad day in our club history) there was a long gap before another Spiritus Animalis found us.  The successor to Snow ended up being a cat of great beauty - Minnow the Maine Coon.  She was an unworldly spirit - like a princess trapped in a tower, she tolerated the common rabble and would, like a diva, jump on the piano (particularly when I was playing) and steal the spotlight.  She was (and still is) stunningly beautiful and kept guard over our club for nearly 5 years before finally retiring from her duties.  She now lives in my apartment sunning herself on the window sill and barely tolerating my other two cats.  Now, out of the blue, comes Bix.  He's a young white tomcat who survived the harrowing ordeal of living on the streets of New York, hiding in a car and being abused.  One day for some reason, he showed up at our club's front door.  We let him in and he now he acts as if he's been there his whole life.  He may very well be a reincarnated jazz musicians from some other era finding his most comfortable home.  But he is a hit - a most amiable kitty, eager to be touched and held, much to the delight of the audience.  Welcome home, Bix.  Let the mice tremble with fear.

I'm psyched to announce that we have finally changed our live streaming platform to UStream, a really great streaming company run by IBM.  We're hoping that this will solidify our transmissions and eliminate any of the issues that people have been having with FLASH compatibility.  Please let us know how this system is working for you and if there's any issues.

I wish everyone an excellent week and hope to see you at the clubs for one of our great shows.

Regards,

Spike
