Conference USA: Commish MacLeod from Irving on her league's TV rights challenge, "It was an absolutely horrible time to be out there (in 2016) […] Depending on how the consumer wants to get their content, we want to be sure it’s available in many different ways. […] There’s plenty of interest in our content. We feel like it’s going to be a much better situation this time." MacLeod also commented on setup of this year's MBB & WBB Tourneys at The Star in Frisco, calls it "unique" & "special," though also a bit of a "risk." Hopes the destination helps to sell fans. (link); More MacLeod, this time on FB success, "At times we sit back and let the narrative be what it is. We need to get more aggressive and let people know about the success that we have had and that we are building some really strong programs." (link); One of the key storylines for the league on the gridiron is the return of UAB. Blazers HC Clark: "We have already had an undefeated year just being here […] I’m super excited about coming back and the crowd and the atmosphere. That’s going to be fun. I’ll probably be more excited than I’ve ever been." (Iink)
CBSSports.com's Dodd compares the Chris Spielman lawsuit at Ohio State to if Tim Tebow sued Florida, "Chris Spielman is that guy at Ohio State." One of the 64 unnamed former student-athletes who is part of the proceedings, "I want the basic human right to say my name and image is not going on a Planned Parenthood [sign]. At the OSU hospital, they might have that." A prominent, but unnamed, antitrust attorney: "This is why we need a college football athlete union… If you're using Chris Spielman's likeness to make money and you're not paying him, you are breaking the law." Dodd: "You can understand why the likes of IMG wouldn't want to pay. The IMG College Licensing website states it controls 80 percent of the $4.6 billion retail market for collegiate licensed merchandise. If it strikes a deal with the Ohio State players, that cuts into that 80 percent. In fact, the best legal strategy for Ohio State partners like Nike, IMG and Honda may be to fight aggressively to protect their financial turf." A bit more. (link)
Wake Forest was "one of three programs to have the football team reach a bowl game, the men's basketball team make the NCAA Tournament and the baseball team advance to the super regionals." Demon Deacons AD Wellman on his fanbase, "Not that their loyalty decreased when we were mediocre or not doing as well as we need to, but the questions then were, 'When are we going to get better?' Now, the questions are, 'Golly, that was great to go to a bowl — which bowl will we go to this year?' They're always building on that previous year ... 'How far do you think we'll go in the basketball tournament this year?' And those are fun discussions to have." And, with facility upgrades continuing, Wellman believes his department can excel at even higher levels, "we're improving and we're winning enough to get our fans excited about what the future might hold, whether it be football, basketball, baseball. I think any of our sports, people would be excited about." (link)
North Dakota State AD Larsen says his understanding is a new nine-game league schedule for the Big Ten will come with the ability to play FCS opponents in years when B1G programs only get four home conference kicks. Larsen: "We sure hope so. Again, the best part for us is with the Big Ten, it's the most geographical favorable footprint and they are the teams we would most prefer to play. There are a lot of Land Grant institutions and it gives our fan base more ability to travel." Larsen would like to engage Minnesota on the opportunity, also believes the Bison make an attractive option given the number of tickets his fan base could move. (link)
Kansas State generated $28.2M in overall cash gifts in FY17, including $18.4M for the Ahearn Fund, a new record, on its way to a balanced budget. FY18's number set at $73.4M, up by $700K year over year. Tickets, plus Ahearn Fund giving expected to reach $34M, distributions from the Big 12 ballparked at $30M. On the expense side, an addition $1.2M will be pushed to operating/recruiting costs, $584K in administrative support planned to be pushed back to the university. (link)
Auburn AD Jacobs indicates he & Notre Dame peer Swarbrick are trying to find a date to matchup on the FB field, "We were together a couple of weeks ago for an Under Armour event […] We first tried to do a home-and-home (or) a neutral site. We couldn't get it worked out because of scheduling issues, but trying to find an opening." AL.com notes 2025 may be the earliest opportunity on the Tigers slate for a new "major" non-conference game. (link); Auburn also announced the launch of a 24-hour TuneIn channel. "Programming will include live game broadcasts, Tiger Talk, press conferences and past games from football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and more. It will also mix in podcasts featuring guests and timely topics surrounding Auburn and college athletics." (link)
LEAD1's new Board of Trustees will by led in 2017-18 by Colorado AD George as Chair, Clemson boss Radakovich as 1st Vice Chair & Texas A&M's Woodward as 2nd Vice Chair. Others on the board: Bowen, Wilcox, Phillips, Plonsky, Hocutt, Massaro, Nielsen, Knuth, Cunningham, Vecchione, Luck, Cohen, Moccia, Muir & Swarbrick. Prez/CEO McMillen: "LEAD1 Association is fortunate to have such an extraordinary leadership in its member ranks." (link)
HBR: "Stop Using the Excuse 'Organizational Change is Hard'." Organizational psychologist Tasler says our biases toward failure is how we are wired so "when a change project falls a day behind schedule, if leaders and employees believe that successful change is an unlikely outcome, they will regard this momentary setback as the dead canary in the coalmine of their change initiative. (Never mind the fact that three other initiatives are still on time or ahead of schedule.) Suddenly, employees disengage en masse and then the change engine begins to sputter in both perception and reality." Disagrees wholeheartedly with Hammer and Champy's highly-published 70% failure rate, instead believes that number to be around 10% and wants leaders to "flip the script." "Change is hard in the same way that it’s hard to finish a marathon. Yes, it requires significant effort. But the fact that it requires effort doesn’t negate the fact that most people who commit to a change initiative will eventually succeed. This point has gone largely unnoticed by an entire generation of experts and laypeople alike. I am just as guilty of this omission as everyone else. But now that we know the truth, don’t we have a duty to act on it?  Isn’t it time to change the way we talk about change? As leaders and consultants we need to be aware that our team members are not entering change situations with a blank slate. Two decades of hearing about mythical failure rates has planted the seeds of bias against success in our minds. And every time we say 'change is hard' we water those seeds." (link)

The Great Alaska Shootout will be played for the 40th time this November & the format is changing a bit for both the Men's & Women's sides. For the first time, a full slate of four games will be played on Thanksgiving Day to create more bracket balance. Alaska Anchorage Asst. AD for Media Relations Sagan: "Most teams coming up (in the past) enjoy staying the extra day on Thanksgiving. We hope fans eat early and come out and support the women that day." This year's Women's field: Binghamton, Tulsa, Maryland Eastern Shore & UAA. Men's: Cal Poly, College of Charleston, Central Michigan, Sam Houston State, Idaho, Santa Clara, Cal State Bakersfield & UAA. (link)

Iowa FB senior student-athlete Welsh pens for HawkeyeSports.com on his toughest opponent: depression. "The simple truth is that it doesn't matter if it's on the football field, in the classroom or in a corporate office – success doesn't immunize you from depression. ... depression doesn't discriminate. You can have everything working in your favor – a strong upbringing, a loving family, a promising future – and depression can turn it upside down. It can make your successes feel unimportant and your problems seem monumental. It made me feel empty, like I had nothing. But it also galvanized me. It gave me a perspective that I never would have gained without it. Depression also taught me pure, visceral humility and that I need to be honest with myself and others about how I feel." (link); USA Today's Schellong, in "How College Athletes Are Fighting the Stigma of Mental Illness," covers Southern Cal junior volleyball student-athlete Garrick's TEDx presentation last month and her involvement in on-campus support groups like Hope Happens Here, a group formed by Saint Michael's College (Vermont) hockey student-athletes McKenzie and Divis to promote mental health awareness among college athletes. USC Assoc. Dir. of Clinical and Sport Psychology Scholefield says the difference in how athletes vs. non-athletes experience mental health issues is "because student athletes are from a culture that's stoic... not addressing how they feel... repressing their feelings." Stats: "A survey of nearly 21,000 Division I, II and III college athletes at nearly 600 schools indicated mental health issues were not uncommon. Approximately 30% of students self-reported feeling overwhelmed a month prior to the survey was conducted. And according to a study surveying 465 athletes at Division I colleges, 28% of female athletes reported “clinically relevant” levels of depression compared with 18% of male athletes." Lots more here, including the Best Practices guide that the NCAA made available in 2016. (link)
Cotton Bowl Prez/CEO Baker is watching the proceedings in the Texas Legislature over the pending "Bathroom Bill," but isn't yet thinking about the possibility that his bowl game could be stripped of its spot in the College Football Playoff rotation. "I don’t want to stick my head in the sand, but we haven’t thought that far ahead. We’re watching it." Big 12 Commish Bowlsby echoed those comments: "We’re certainly watching it very carefully. I just don’t know if it makes any sense to get overly anxious about things we can’t control." (link)
Despite the passage of an Illinois state budget, SIU Edwardsville AD Hewitt says it will still be a couple years before any major changes are made within the department, explaining that enrollment will be key moving forward. "The state budget stabilizes the institution, but like any other fee-supported unit, enrollment is our key. To bring back sports, we need to see SIUE make leaps and bounds in enrollment, because that’s going to generate a great deal of revenue for us and allow us to bring back sports, and who knows, maybe even bring in additional sports." (link)

An official announcement awaits, but reports indicate Louisville will pay the Louisville Arena Authority, overseer of the KFC Yum! Center, $2.5M more per year to aid with the venue's refinancing plan. In total, the Cardinals would contribute an additional $75M, on top of the $1.3M to $1.8M it already pays annually, over the next 30 years. The Cardinals will also give back approximately 50 dates that could be used for other events to create revenue for the arena & city. Twenty of said dates are a result of Volleyball moving its games back to Cardinal Arena on campus. UofL's Athletic Association & Board of Trustees are set to discuss the plans today. (link)
The 90-day lock on an in-depth piece covering multimedia rights deals by Portland Business Journal's Kish has finally expired, meaning you can now read the whole thing in front of a pay wall. It's quite long, but full of nuggets, like details within the 10-year $150M deal between IMG College & UCLA, as well as Oregon's six-year $53M pact with IMGC. North Carolina sports marketing professor & industry expert Jensen on the pact in Westwood, "I’ve never seen such an exhaustive list. I’ve been doing sponsorship deals for 20 years. Anything you could potentially think of that you could put a brand on is in this contract. The corporate branding they’re going to allow inside Pauley Pavilion is insane." Piece also includes comments & insights from Learfield boss Brown, IMG College Prez Pernetti, as well as UCLA AD Guerrero & Oregon's Mullens. (link)
Holy Cross's Crusader Athletics Fund raised a record $2.08M in 2016-17, an increase of 27% from last year. The CAF was able to best the previous record of $1.63M by having six programs raise more than $100K and three pull in more than $200K, along with strong engagement from former student-athletes. (link); Cal State Bakersfield's Roadrunner Scholarship Fund raised a record $800K in 2016-17, part of the $1.9M banked overall by the department. The fund has more than doubled since it raised ~$350K four years ago. (link)
ECU's sponsorship deal in NASCAR has hit a wall, as Rick Ware Racing notified the school that it's going in a different direction because the sponsorships it expected the purple and gold car to generate did not materialize. The Monster Energy Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend was slated to be the second of a three-race deal, which was worked out at no cost to ECU as part of an initiative to introduce colleges and universities to the world of NASCAR marketing. ECU Asst. AD for Marketing and Sales Herring: "We’re certainly disappointed to not be out there at Indy. When we learned they weren’t going to be able to get those sponsors, we were disappointed, but it’s a business. They’ve got to be able to pay for that car, and if they’ve got to find other opportunities that paying sponsors can bring that car, I get it. It’s just part of racing." (link)

AstroTurf's Diamond Series chosen as the venue's playing surface. AstroTurf Director of Baseball Operations Klotz: "Honestly, the stadium they’re building is ridiculous, ... there’s going to be nothing like it in college baseball, I mean they’re building a palace." (link)
