Rockin’ Kids Sing Along
A musical play group for kids of all ages. Hosted by Stephanie Pepitone, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and former punk rock singer/guitarist. Stephanie plays acoustic guitar and leads families in about an hour’s worth of singing, dancing, music making and fun/chaos. Features original children’s music and some of your old time favorites as well as songs in Spanish!

Peruvian Independence Day Party
Celebrate Peruvian Independence Day with Afro-Peruvian music and dance! Enjoy LIVE MUSIC by De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association as well as music by Sal Chicha a new Peruvian cumbia band that will surely make you dance! Peruvian food and drinks will be available!

Capoeira Angola Class
Brazilian Instructor Sergio Bittencourt teaches Capoeira Angola  Tuesdays and Saturdays at La Peña. The class incorporates 1 hour of music and 1 hour of ritual combat arts.  It is believed that its origins may go as far back as the 16th century, when Africans from western Central Africa were enslaved and taken to Brazil, specifically Salvador and the surround Recôncavo region.

Adult Bomba y Plena Workshop
Students in the Adult Bomba y Plena workshop learn dance, songs, drum rhythms, and history of Puerto Rico. Classes culminate in student performances. For those interested in staying healthy, connecting with the community or learning a rich musical tradition, Bomba is for you. This class is open to all levels and drop-ins are welcome. Instruction is geared to different levels and skills from beginner to more advanced. Click on link for more info!

Salsa Party and Dance Class
Attention Aspiring Salsa Dancers! Come brush up on your salsa dancing skills at Orquesta La Peña’s Monthly Salsa Party and Dance Class the last Monday of every month! The evening starts off with a beginners salsa dance class from 8pm-9pm. Followed by TWO sets of LIVE SALSA MUSIC by Orquesta La Peña, directed by Josh Jones! We will also have EMPANADAS, BEER, WINE FOR SALE! (Cash only please).

COMMUNITY UPDATES
Bay Area Mural Festival Open Call to Artists

The 2nd Annual Bay Area Mural Festival, slated for October 2-8 in Richmond, is now accepting artist applications. The deadline to apply is August 7, 2017.

With support from the California Arts Council, La Peña Cultural Center has partnered with Los Pobres Artistas mural group, Richmond Art Center, Earth Team and other invited artists and organizations to produce the 2nd annual Bay Area Mural Festival (BAMFest 2017) this fall. BAMFest will bring together 10 master muralists and 2 East Bay youth groups through a series of artist residencies and workshops culminating in the painting of 10 environmentally themed murals.

Artists will paint for one week and end the festival with a closing celebration at Richmond Art Center Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 1pm-5pm with speakers, community painting, and performances by local musicians and dancers, which will be open to the public.

School Supply Drive was a Success

La Peña was proud to partner with Food Empowerment Project as a drop-off location for their annual School Supply Drive for the children of California farmworkers! The drive was a huge success and we received many donations, as pictured above. Thank you to everyone who donated to the families who work so hard helping to put the food on our tables and taking the time to contribute!
