Healthwatch Wirral 2016/17 Annual Report

The Healthwatch Wirral 2016/17 Annual Report is now live! You can view this by clicking here.
This report will give you an insight on the work we have been doing during the financial year of 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2017.

‘Your Road to Recovery’ Report

Healthwatch Wirral has been working in collaboration with the charity Interchange on a new project for 2017.

Healthwatch Wirral is a community interest company.  This is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.

Interchange acts as a facilitator between voluntary community organisations and third year University students.

Esme Walker, a final year student from Liverpool University, joined us in January of this year on our ‘Your Road to Recovery’ project.  The project has been looking at services on Wirral for people with substance abuse problems.  Prior to 2015 Wirral CCG commissioned a number of different providers for these services.  In 2015 Wirral CCG then commissioned CRI (Crime Reduction Initiatives) who later changed their name to CGL (Change, Grow Live) in partnership with the Spider Project and Phoenix Futures.

Esme’s research took the form of questionnaires, focus groups and interviews with two staff members and her report is detailed below.

Online Directory of Services

As part of our work with the Mental Health Concordat and the Suicide Prevention training for community gatekeepers, we have developed an online directory of services. This is to help individuals experiencing difficulties which may impact on their mental health and ensure that they can be signposted to local appropriate services before they have a crisis.
Our signposting page is now up and running and can be found using the link below;

Mental health service launched for new and expectant mums

Local mental health partners have launched a specialist mental health service to help new and expectant mums in Cheshire and Merseyside.

Cheshire and Mersey Specialist Perinatal Service has been set up to support women and families experiencing mental health problems during pregnancy and in the first year after birth.

The specialist service consists of three ‘local’ teams, provided by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership (CWP), North West Boroughs Healthcare and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trusts.

The three teams aim to improve access to evidence-based treatments, as well as training for other frontline staff caring for local women to ensure consistent, high-quality care across the region.

NHS England have committed more than £3m to the project, which forms part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP).

Dementia care rated as ‘Outstanding’ in Wirral

The care of people with dementia in Wirral has been rated as ‘outstanding’.

Dementia services were one of three clinical priority areas looked at as part of the annual assessment of NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) by NHS England.

The other clinical areas assessed were cancer care which was rated as ‘good’ and the care of people with mental health which was rated as ‘requires improvement’. The CCG has identified the areas where improvements to mental health care are required and has prioritised this as part of its operational plan.
The assessment of performance against the three priority areas has been published alongside the CCG’s Improvement and Assessment Framework (IAF) results. Wirral has been rated as requiring improvement against the IAF indicators of better health, better care, sustainability and being well led.

The rating reflects concern at the CCG’s financial deficit, for which financial recovery plans have been written and work continues to ensure the CCG commissions quality health services that are within its agreed budget.

Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice

Over half a million people across Cheshire and Merseyside set to benefit as clinical pharmacists join general practice teams

The General Practice Forward View committed to over £100m of investment to support an extra 1,500 clinical pharmacists to work in general practice by 2020/21.

The second wave of applications for the clinical pharmacy roll out programme has been assessed, meaning that over 1770 sites which cover nearly 18.5 million patients will benefit from the skill mix and knowledge that clinical pharmacists bring to general practice.  In Cheshire and Merseyside, this means that 581,916 people will have access to a clinical pharmacist through the pilot programme.

This builds on the 494 clinical pharmacists already working across approximately 650 GP practices as part of a pilot, launched in July 2015.

Secondary school staff get mental health 'first aid' training

From June 2017, teachers in secondary schools around the country will take part in a new training programme to help them identify and respond to early signs of mental health issues in children.

The programme, backed in the first year by £200,000 in government funding, and delivered by the social enterprise Mental Health First Aid, will start with 1,000 staff and extend in years 2 and 3 to cover every secondary school in England. They will receive practical advice on how to deal with issues such as depression and anxiety, suicide and psychosis, self-harm, and eating disorders.

They will also be invited to become ‘first aid champions’, sharing their knowledge and experiences across schools and communities to raise awareness and break down stigma and discrimination.

Consultation on guidance to ensure a safe and effective pharmacy team

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) are consulting on new guidance for pharmacy owners which outlines what they are expected to do to ensure everyone in the pharmacy team can provide safe and effective services to patients and the public.
The consultation is open from 20th July 2017 to 11th October 2017

The proposed guidance for pharmacy owners covers both registered and unregistered staff, including managers who are not registered pharmacy professionals.

The consultation document explains how the GPhC plans to strengthen and assure the regulatory framework for unregistered pharmacy staff.

The new guidance would replace the current policy on minimum training requirements for dispensing/ pharmacy assistants and medicines counter assistants.

They are seeking views on proposals from members of the public, registered and unregistered members of the pharmacy team and pharmacy owners, as well as the organisations that represent these groups, to help inform their approach.

Please read the consultation documents below and respond to their consultation survey.

Birkenhead Central Library to host free summer workshops for children

A series of activities are taking place for children this summer at Birkenhead Central Library.

Four free workshops are planned for August based on the topic 'destiny' giving children different things to learn and make.

Supported by Arts Council England funding, experienced artists will lead the activities combining arts and crafts with the latest technology to create 'techy art'.

'Techy art' can light up, change colour, talk or play music.

All 'techy' artwork will then be displayed at the prestigious Williamson Art Gallery.

Each of the workshops last for three days and will take place between 10am and 3pm - children are welcome to attend as many or as few as they like and can either stay at the workshop during lunchtime or have lunch at home between 12pm and 1pm.
