As previously discussed, as we enter our 2017-2018 fiscal year on July 1st the group meeting rent will see a small increase up to $35/month. Over the past year we have tried to keep things at the same rate, but the ComEd bill in particular s hitting us hard at about $400 a month. If this small increase is a problem for your group, please come to a board meeting and let us hear from you. The board meets every third Thursday at 6:30 pm in the members lounge.
The Showcase Raffle is still on! Only 50 chances to win a Leather-bound Study Edition Big Book ($60 Value!). There are less than 30 tickets left, so see a meeting chair to get yours for $1 each now. Once all are sold, we will pick a winner!
Meeting Updates: Since the Thursday 7 PM meeting is no longer active, we have an open spot for another group to start up. If you are interested, let us know. We like to have full use of the club and it might be a good lead up to the NiteCap at 10. If you haven’t been to a NiteCap meeting, Tuesday ‘Beginners’, Wednesday and Thursday ‘No Back-up Plan’, and Saturday’s ‘Candlelit-Spiritual’ should be experienced. I think that they are the finest 10PM meetings in Elgin.

A note from my highchair... Recovery is in the air and it smells like Alano Club coffee.

I want to thank all who showed up for the Fireworks and Key Exchange on July 1st. The future success of the Elgin Alano Club relies on open fellowship fundraising events like this! As the monthly Income vs. Expenses are still not quite balancing out to the positive, we are looking for events ideas, activities, new groups/meetings or workshops to draw more people to the club for week to week activities and also have an opportunity to raise special funds to bridge that budget gap at the same time. You input is valued and welcomed!
I just found a list of things that seem to describe alcoholic behavior and thought that a few apply to current situations.
“An AA group will be judged by the worst behavior of its members.”
This is good to remember when in and/or around our club.
“Non-alcoholics change their behavior to meet their goals; alcoholics change their goals to meet their behavior.”
This reminds me of another one that I don’t hear often enough.
“You can’t think your way into good living; you have to live your way into good thinking.”
As we "trudge Riverside Drive to happy destiny", we must recognize we are among people outside of AA/NA who do not have the benefit of a Spiritual Awakening, facing problems without our 12-step program of recovery and fellowship.
I don’t know about you, but I get a good feeling by being kind to strangers; the stranger, the better. A cheerful greeting is sometimes enough to change a person’s day. We are all stuck on this planet together so we might as well try to get along. I have noticed that when I catch myself taking someone’s inventory, the ones that 'hit' me most usually have a lot in common with my shortcomings that are most annoying. I have been asking God to give me patience, RIGHT NOW!!!! Can you guess how that is working out?
"Recovery is something like the restoration of a very old painting, covered over by layers and layers of darkening, distorted varnish ... Not all of the underlying pattern can be revealed at one time. What is uncovered, bit by bit and layer by slow, careful layer, are the things which are necessary and appropriate for me to know about myself right now."
