High School Students Learn about Animal Health and Diagnostics at Summer Scholars Program

Thirty-three high-achieving high school students took advantage of the opportunity for some hands-on learning from SDSU Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences faculty this month.  The students were part of SDSU's Honors College Summer Scholars Program who had identified a specific interest in veterinary and biomedical science.  VBSD faculty members Alan Young, David Knudsen, and Chris Chase led the students in a variety of activities through the week, while Dr. Rosie Nold from SDSU's Animal Science Department arranged tours of the animal units.   Besides the tours, students performed diagnostic test procedures, participated in a disease outbreak scenario, and spent time on the necropsy floor looking at pathology cases.  In addition, students learned about careers in veterinary medicine and biological sciences.

Veterinary and Biomedical Science Department is Key Collaborator in New Biologics Center

Treating and preventing gastrointestinal disorders by developing probiotics and nutraceuticals that improve bacterial balance in the digestive tract is one of the goals of the new South Dakota Center for Biologics Research and Commercialization.

Other goals of the center are to develop vaccines, immunotherapies, diagnostic reagents and tests that aim to improve overall health, according to SD-CBRC administrative director Jane Christopher-Hennings, head of the SDSU Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.
