CRITICAL ML & THE NEWS
Critical media literacy work must be founded in action, especially when it comes to journalism, currently under fire for reasons both good and bad. In keeping with our multi-pronged approach to CML—education, activism, partnering—ACME is thrilled to be part of the Weave News 10th-anniversary conference in upstate New York this fall! Board member Bill Yousman will deliver the keynote and officers Ben Boyington and Allison Butler will present on fake news, student journalism, and the work of the Global Critical Media Literacy Project. Stay tuned to the ACME and Weave Facebook and Twitter feeds. If you don't yet follow either, we hope you will!
CML: An Educational Tool to Respond to Racial Violence
It starts with a hashtag. Just a name, a stranger’s name and nothing else. You know instantly what it is—it’s another victim of police brutality, of Islamophobia, of misogynoir. Sometimes the hashtag is accompanied by a request—say their name, perhaps join a protest—or a petition. ...          READ MORE

The Weave News 10th Anniversary Conference

On September 22-24, Weave News will host a special conference at St. Lawrence University (Canton, NY) to mark our 10th anniversary of grassroots media-making. The conference will spotlight work in investigative citizen journalism and critical media education and will feature a series of hands-on workshops designed to help attendees develop key investigative and multimedia skills that are part of the citizen journalist toolbox.

Weave News was founded as a global community of citizen journalists committed to weaving a better world. Our organization is directed by a team of seasoned staffers who assist contributors in sharing their work via our investigative blogs, Big Questions videography, multimedia projects, and other initiatives. We believe that the work of journalism is too important to be left to mainstream/corporate media outlets whose content is increasingly driven by the interests of powerful elites. Our work is grounded in citizen journalism: the idea that any of us can act as journalists by gathering and sharing information about what is happening in the world.

The 10th Anniversary Conference will also include a film screening and Q&A with director Quester Hannah, a live performance by artist and activist Taina Asili y la Banda Rebelde, and a networking reception with fellow citizen journalists. The event promises to be a dynamic weekend of learning, networking, and activism to bring back to your communities. We hope to see you there!

If you cannot be there in person, follow the conference at #WeaveNews10! And if you do come, we hope you'll tweet about it! In the meantime, watch Facebook and Twitter for updates!   —Nicole Eigbrett, Weave News
ACME’s Allison Butler Speaks CML to Worcester State Faculty
On May 17, I had the distinct honor to present the keynote address, "Truth and Untruth: Using critical media literacy to make sense of the current political, news, and information environment," at Worcester State University’s Faculty Summer Institute. I spoke with faculty from across the university about the main tenets of CML, including engaging in continuous critical inquiry and explorations of power. Using examples from the mainstream/corporate news, we highlighted ways to evaluate trustworthy news, fake news, satire, and propaganda through critical media literacy. Faculty were given questions to ask of any media text and were encouraged to expand those questions to their own fields of study. Special thanks to Worcester State University faculty Daniel Hunt and faculty/ACME Co-President Julie Frechette for inviting me.          —Allison Butler
Out of the Maze of Fake News
Fake news! The accusations are flying from both left and right. Liberals decry social media stories that led people to believe the most absurd lies about Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign season. Meanwhile, President Trump and his staff and supporters use the term like a weapon against any news outlet that dares to question Trumpian statements and policies. ....          READ MORE
