It has been a challenging academic year for D&T teachers with the new KS4 and KS5 qualifications on the horizon, ever tightening budgets, and the continually changing education landscape. All of this has also kept us very busy over the last few months, so much so that there has not been a proper blog since May and this is now the final one before the end of term. We hope to return to a more regular blog at the beginning of the Autumn term. Don’t forget that at busy times like these you can still get regular updates, news and freebies via our social media links.

Some Resources For The Last Few Days of Term
Some schools have already broken up but if you still have another week or so left take a look at these ideas to get you through to the end of term: - Why not use our ‘Product in a Tin’ competition as an end of term activity? You never know you might just win a sewing machine for your department!
- Find out more about the BBC's 'Invented in England' series focusing on inventions that originated in different areas of the country which might be useful for activities towards the end of term especially if you are able to link a particular programme to your local area.
- Get students doing some design activities using this free sheet based on the idea that there are 40 ‘best’ answers, patterns or principles that man and nature use when designing and solving problems.
- Set a holiday homework inspired by the list of unconventional tasks an Italian teacher gave his students to complete over the summer holiday.
- See lots of other ideas in the Let’s Learn section of the website

Resources To Support Your Curriculum Planning Over The Summer
If you are doing any planning over the summer take a look at the website as there may be resources that might support you for example: - If you are still haven’t made a decision on an exam board specification there’s a summary of what each specification offers
- If you aren’t sure where to start when planning for the new GCSEs the website has a ‘5 top tips’ to get you started, which includes links to KS3 and GCSE mapping documents
- If you're looking for teaching and learning activity ideas and support visit the Let’s Learn section of the website. This is in the early stages of development and is a long term project to develop resources that support all qualifications at KS4 and KS5, as well as KS3.
- Take a look at Diana Choulerton’s presentation at the D&T Association’s Summer School (Ofsted’s National Lead for D&T)
- Get ideas for a D&T related day out over the holiday.

Over the summer we have lots of plans for developments to the website, including lots of new free resources. We are also developing a new and exciting course format for our own independent courses and details of these will be released soon. This includes a D&T Teacher Roadshow using a similar format to the very successful Textiles Teacher Roadshow that has run for the last 6 years. Don’t worry as the Textiles one will still continue with the first one of the new academic year taking place on 14th October in Nottingham (book your place for the Textiles Teacher Roadshow here). In addition we are working with some industrial partners to develop new links with industry which we hope will give teachers more access to the real world of design and manufacturing.

Are You Looking For A Course Over The Summer?
We've had a number of enquiries about whether we can run courses over summer holiday. We know it is difficult for many teachers to be released from school during term time and we're always happy to consider running a course over a holiday if there is sufficient interest. We would need at least 3 delegates for a course to be cost effective (dependent on where the venue is) so if you think you can get at least this number together we are happy to consider running a course of your choice (note this is for our independent courses only and not the courses we deliver at the National STEM Learning Centre). If your school will release you for the day but the cost of the course itself is a problem take a look at the courses coming up at the National STEM Learning Centre in the Autumn term. These courses are bursary funded which means the fees are paid for if you work in a state school (and in some cases so is the accommodation). Courses include ones to support KS3, the new GCSE, smart & modern materials, e-textiles/electronics/programming and many more. Take a look at the course calendar for the Autumn term (lots more will be added over the summer)

About Our Training We're a small independent company & run our own courses & events, as well as delivering courses on behalf of other companies. Our USP on our independent courses personalisation of content to meet the needs of individual delegates & because of this we often restrict numbers on courses to very small groups. This is not cost effective for larger companies & it's something that sets us apart. Another USP is that we often deliver content together meaning delegates get a breadth of experience from our time in the classroom, as leaders, or in industry.

Looking for CPD on a limited budget? Look out for the Roadshows which are low cost Saturday courses offering quality CPD at a fraction of the cost of our standard courses.
Did you know courses we deliver on behalf of the National STEM Learning Centre are bursary funded for state schools, including accommodation in some cases? It’s just a form to fill in & there's no limit on how many courses you can attend. Your school pays a deposit which is refunded in full once you attend (independent schools can attend but pay the full fee). Look out for the bursary in course details to know which courses this applies to.
