August
Proud Fisherman
Summertime
By: Debbie Jordan
Driving around the back roads of Maryland during late July and August, you will no doubt drive past vast fields of sunflowers. These glorious, bright yellow and green fields attract an abundance of birds, butterflies, wildlife....and, yes, photographers. At some of the largest sunflower fields, it is not uncommon to find 5, 10, 20, or even 30 photographers on an early morning or early evening shoot. Some are there to capture the beauty of the scene, while others are there to take family portraits against the backdrop of these amazing flowers.

There was a very small sunflower field near my home last year. Parked on the edge of the field was a hay wagon with a sign "Pick you own sunflowers - $1 per flower." and a box to leave the money in. Driving home in the late afternoon, I often saw people in the field choosing their flower or photographing their children in the fields. Unfortunately, that field was not planted with sunflowers this year.

The photo above was taken at a large sunflower field in Harford County. While there, it began to rain. But before I left, I captured the photo below. If you look closely, you will notice the reflection of the field in the raindrop.

The Swallowed Giant
The Swallowed Giant

This picture was taken in Hunting Island, South Carolina. The "silky" water is the result of leaving the camera shutter open for a longer period of time, capturing and blending the movement over time. A faster shutter speed captures and freezes the motion of the water at that one particular moment in time. Summer is the perfect time to head to the beach and try a little long exposure photography.

Speaking of South Carolina, are you ready for the "Great American Eclipse" happening on August 21st, 2017? This will be the first total solar eclipse over the US in a long while. Here in Maryland it will only be a partial solar eclipse. This means the moon will not completely block out the sun, but will cover a good portion of the sun. If you want the full eclipse experience, Google search "path of totality" maps. These maps will give detailed information on a narrow band running from Oregon to South Carolina where the moon will completely block out the sun, and the sun's corona will be briefly visible. I highly encourage you to do some research on where to view the eclipse and how to view it safely.

Personally, I am heading to Nashville, Tennessee to catch the full eclipse. The sun will be very high in the sky so the photography options will be limited, but this is an event I have been waiting for my entire life - ever since I first saw the charts at the age of 10.

Mark you calendars now! The 52nd annual Bel Air Festival for the Arts will be held on Sunday, September 17, 9:00-5:00. Admission is free. There will be over 300 unique artists and craft vendors, live music and food. We will be there...so stop in!  Click here for more information.
