You have to come! Everybody's going to be there!

This year, Booksellers NZ has been active for 96 years – making this our 96th conference: not bad going, for a sector of the retail industry that the media had all but given up on 10 years ago with the advent of e-books.

Now, of course, we know an e-book is simply a different way of delivering literature, and it isn’t ever going to be used by everybody in the world. However, we still have some real challenges threatening the health of our bookshops.

We continue to get rebuffed by the Government on the matter of collection GST on online offshore purchases, despite our research paper and countless formal letters to the variety of Ministers who have been responsible for Revenue and Tax Collection / Customs / etc. This is especially urgent now as Amazon moves literally next door.

So the theme of this year’s Conference is ‘Building Our Future’, with a focus on resilience... Read on to find out more about the highlights of the conference, and learn how to write a successful entry for A Book Industry Award. (And check out the programme).

It is refreshing to read board books for young babies which represent the world they are growing up in through beautiful pictures and simple text.

In Colours for Kiwi Babies, each double page spread focuses on one colour. One page is filled with the colour with the colour’s name in both te reo Māori and English. Opposite, a stylized kiwi image represents the colour. With each turn of the page, the pictures show New Zealand proudly – a rugby jersey, pohutakawa, pavalova; all things your child is likely to grow up knowing in real life.

In Counting for Kiwi Babies, the focus is on New Zealand native birds from across the country – kiwi, tūī, ruru and kea for example. The text includes the numeral with te reo Māori and English names for each number. This is great as your child grows for number recognition. Read on.

Rachel Eadie, Manager, Scorpio Books, Christchurch (Board Member elected 2016)

Rachel Eadie was elected as a Board Member of Booksellers NZ at the 95th Booksellers NZ Conference in 2016. Our board members fill an essential role in our business, advising us on our strategy and business targets.

Here is a bit more about Rachel and her passions as a bookseller.

Please tell us about your early experiences with reading and books.
I was a bibliophile from an early age – my mother likes to tell the story that from the age of 5 I was alphabetizing my books – to her horror marking A-Z on my antique bookshelf, and then twinking it when it had to be re-arranged! I was a huge fan Kiwi authors such as Sherryl Jordon and Maurice Gee, and of course my 80’s childhood consisted of reading piles of Nancy Drew and The Babysitters Club. I also fondly remember devouring the Chronicles of Narnia and The Secret Garden; my very battered copies now sit on my children’s bookshelves.

Read on to find out more about what she is hoping to achieve as a board member, and what it is she loves about bookselling.
