Discussion has started about future directions for Library Carpentry and working with Software and Data Carpentry. Library Carpenters want this to be an open, community-led discussion so please have your say.
Are we teaching Git backwards? Anelda van der Walt got the talking started with her post on alternatives to Git, while Jake Vanderplas’s talk at PyData Seattle started a ‘Python for data science’ thread.
Joinery
Data Carpentry Executive Director Tracy Teal was the speaker for the Diversity Luncheon (Thursday, 13 July 2017) at this year’s SciPy.
Software Carpentry Executive Director Jonah Duckles featured in the Storify for the Sydney Research Bazaar (ResBaz). He was helping teach at one of three concurrent Software Carpentry workshops being run at that event.
The Carpentries are running four instructor training events in July and August for non-partner affiliates. These events will serve new instructor trainees from 21 countries in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. If you have applied to become a Carpentry instructor, please stay tuned for announcements about more upcoming trainings.
Offcuts
Belinda Weaver, our new Community Development Lead, has asked supporters what she should focus on first. Keeping people informed, and engaging more people in lesson maintenance were both raised. Keep the feedback coming and join the discussion on our next community call on July 20/21 (call times/dates will depend on your location) where some feedback will be discussed.

Mentoring
Fifteen new folks have joined the Trainer Group as Trainers-in-Training. They’ll be meeting weekly for the next two months to prepare to lead instructor training events. Please join us in welcoming Amy Hodge, Anita Schürch, Alexander Konovalov, Danielle Quinn, Elizabeth Wickes, Fotis Psomopoulos, Francisco Palm, François Michonneau, John Simpson, Juan Steyn, Kwasi Amoako Kwakwa, Marijka Batterham, Martin Dreyer, Paula Andrea Martinez, and Robert Davy to the Trainer team!
CarpentryCon
Staff from NumFOCUS gave advice to CarpentryCon planners in a recent call. A GitHub repository has been set up to capture ideas, so feel free to do that in issues. Fotis Psomopoulos is planning to move all existing minutes and other documentation there.

Formative assessment for instructors
Post-workshop feedback is great for tweaking future workshops, but feedback gathered in-class can help instructors do better right then and there. Read Tracy Teal's post about the many uses of minute cards.
Survey feedback analysed
Learners are motivated by what we teach. Read Kari Jordan’s work on analysing our workshop survey feedback - with pictures! The raw data is also available for further analysis.
Updating instructor training
We plan to publish an updated instructor training curriculum on August 10. To identify issues that need fixing, we ran an issue bonanza from 13-14 July. Bugs will be squashed in a Bug BBQ on 3-4 August. Trainers, instructors and members of our community are welcome to get involved.
