Highlights from the Software and Data Carpentry Community Calendar
Instructor Curriculum Update
A new version of the Carpentry Instructor Training curriculum will be published on 10 August. We ran an issue bonanza on 13-14 July to identify bugs, typos and broken links in the existing material. These issues will be resolved with a 24-hour Bug BBQ on 3-4 August (check the etherpad for dates and times in your locality). Trainers and instructors - please join us for some bug squashing and lesson polishing. All contributions welcome!
Community Calls
Continuing instructor engagement and quality control for workshops were discussed in the two July community calls. Lots of great ideas were aired. These issues were flagged in feedback to the Community Development Lead. If you have an issue to raise, the feedback form is still open. The August 17 community calls will discuss lesson maintenance. In the September calls, Kari Jordan will present her work on assessment. You can stay on top of past and upcoming calls with the all calls etherpad.
Credit for Lesson Maintainers
We shortly plan to re-release all Software Carpentry lessons as part of a new six-monthly cycle of updates. To get the lessons ready, we polled authors about whether they want to be added to or removed from specific lessons.
Subcommittee Activity
Mentoring
The Mentoring Committee are currently working on a questionnaire to try to gauge the usefulness of instructor discussions for our community. Watch out for a short survey coming your way soon. If you want to know more about mentoring, check out the onboarding document.
CarpentryCon
The committee recently met to discuss plans and potential sites for the 2018 event. Keep in touch with developments via the CarpentryCon repository.
Joinery
There have been lots of new instructors trained in the past two weeks. Belinda Weaver trained 23 people at in-person training for a new partner in Brisbane (with Jonah Duckles assisting from New Zealand), while Erin Becker and Jeff Oliver ran partner training at the University of Arizona on 25-26 July. Christina Koch and Napauka Zimmerman are running online instructor training 31 July - 1 August. We welcome all these new instructors and look forward to teaching workshops with them soon.

Tracy Teal has created an issue to further the discussion about using hackmd.io instead of etherpads in workshops. Please feel free to add your comments.
Open Source Education
Greg Wilson posted about the fledgling Journal of Open Source Education (JOSE). A companion to the Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS), JOSE will publish contributions on open educational software, including computational models. Submissions are not yet being accepted, but watch the repo or their Twitter feed for updates.

If you want to test software but don’t know how to begin, check out the many recent discuss list posts which include lots of useful tips and links.
Workshop Reports
Workshop reports have come in from instructors including Ryan Avery, who ran two successful workshops for groups at NASA DEVELOP. One attendee reported: “ I feel like I removed the fangs of the Python in this workshop and now it can’t bite me anymore.”
Another report has been submitted by Peter Evans, a first time instructor in Potsdam, Germany, who wrote: “ Much credit is due to the SWC community for giving us such a solid, well-structured base to work from.”
