Where'd the summer go?

If your summer is like ours, you might be simultaneously wondering how it's August already, as well as holding onto whatever semblance of calm remains before the new school year AND fiscal year for DC starts.

Speaking of which, you should know that our offices will be closed Monday August 28 through Labor Day Monday. In the meantime, we'll keep this short.

Citywide Needs Assessment for OST Programs

The Deputy Mayor for Education and United Way National Capital Area are conducting a study of the supply of and the demand for out-of-school time programs offered across DC. These programs take many forms and may be offered at varying times (after-school and summer programs, weekend programs, seasonal programs and programs offered during school closures) but all generally have a youth development focus.

Community-based organizations are an important part of the out-of-school time programs landscape, and we are asking you to help support our data-collection efforts. And we need you. The information you provide will help increase our understanding of the need for Out-of-School Time programs and allow us to assess if this need is being met.

Please complete the survey by August 3.
We appreciate your support.

Webinar: Key Findings from Market Research on Social and Emotional Learning

Thursday, August 17, 2 to 3 PM

Social and Emotional Learning. Whole Child. Non-Cognitive Skills. Character. There are many different terms in play for this work, which is intended to help children learn skills they need to succeed in school, in work and in life.

During this session, results will be shared from a recent market research project conducted by EDGE Research that explored how K-12 educators, out-of-school time leaders, and parents think about SEL. Researchers also explored how these groups responded to different ways of framing the benefits of SEL. The findings are based on research, interviews with 45 field leaders, a survey of 1,600 professionals, and focus groups.

Two new NDI resources for strengthening youth political participation

The Youth Political Participation Programming Guide is designed to help democracy and governance practitioners work more effectively to support the political inclusion of young women and men. The guide distills the findings of a recent NDI study that included a review of contemporary literature on youth development, an examination of NDI youth programs, and discussions with other democracy and governance assistance organizations. Most importantly, the study involved a series of consultations with young political leaders and activists from four continents on their political challenges and assistance needs. This ensured that the guide was grounded in the real-life experiences of young people themselves.

The centerpiece of the guide is a refined theory of change for youth political participation, which unifies the different factors that combine to increase meaningful, sustained youth political participation. The guide unpacks the theory and lays out lessons for how it can be operationalized in a program, highlighting examples of NDI programs in Jordan and Kosovo.

The second resource -- the Change My Community platform -- contains tools and guidance for young people seeking to create positive change in their communities through organized political activism. NDI developed this practical resource in conjunction with the Work Group for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas (KU), drawing on content from KU’s Community Tool Box. The resource is intended to touch on all aspects of organizing a campaign to solve a discrete, tangible local problem. This can often help young people begin to build the power and influence to lead change.
Microsoft and Big Parser are conducting a Summer Hackathon on August 19th for 400 STEM high schoolers in DC, Maryland and Virginia area. The main aim is to increase gender and economic diversity in coding.
