Frequently, Family Voices Indiana receives referrals and calls from families in which the primary complaint includes discipline by the school of a child with special health care needs. Care Coordinators can help families avoid additional stress and conflict with the school by recommending as part of the IEP process that a family request a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA), which is then used to create a Positive Behavioral Intervention Plan (PBIP/BIP). These are essential components of a child’s IEP, which can ensure that unwanted and disruptive behaviors and patterns are identified and addressed appropriately, thus eliminating unnecessary or unwarranted disciplinary action. Family Voices Indiana partnered with other organizations to share this guide to requesting an FBA and BIP.
