Welcome back! 
July has been a really busy month.  Everyone is back from their break, and planning has commenced for the remainder of the year.  Here are some highlights from some of the events and activities:
  • The AGISP Steering Committee met at Boeing Defence Australia for the bi-monthly meeting.   
  • Aerospace teacher and Teacher Award Winner, Jon Collins, is on his amazing trip, and currently attending Space Camp as we speak!   Photos to come in next month's newsletter.
  • Aerospace students from Townsville SHS undertook an amazing work experience opportunity assisting Townsville Helicopters during the VIP helicopter transfers at the Townsville 400! (How cool!) (photos below)
  • The Australian Youth Aerospace Forum (AYAF) was yet another successful event this year, which saw 80 keen year 11 and year 12 students participate in aviation related STEM activities.  
  • St. Patrick's College (Mackay) hosted their industry partners Mackay Airport Operations Manager Mr. Philip Clark and General Manager Mr. Rob Porter, and Chrisair Maintenance Director's Claire Christensen for a meeting to discuss the support for the school and the program.  There are some great opportunities for the Aerospace Studies students at St. Patrick's College.  (photo's below)
  • The RAeS Queensland Branch held their annual Sir Hudson Fysh Dinner.  
  • Townsville SHS  hosted an Aerospace GISP meeting between themselves and their local industry partners. Such a great meeting discussing ways they can assist the school with growing aerospace to be bigger and better over the coming years ahead. Thank you to Adrian Norman (Cleveland Bay Aviation), Dick Arnold (Townsville Helicopters), Jason Rainbird (Townsville Airport), Joanne Heenan, (Defence Work Experience), and Heath Coleman (Townsville Airport).  (Photos below)
  • Calamvale Community College Aeropsace students toured Qantas Hangar 3
  • Brisbane SHS Aerospace students took a trip out to the RAAF Amberley base where they were treated to lots of aircraft taking-off and landing including a special fly by, by an F18.  The students were lucky to go up into the tower as well as tour through both Boeing Defence Australia, and TAE Aerospace's facilities.  
  • UQ direct entry applications are now open.  Packages have been sent to all of the principals to share with their respective schools
  • Applications are now open for the 2017 Aerospace Education Awards.  (details below)
  • QUT  and Griffith University have announced their bonus rank scheme for those students studying Aerospace Studies.  
  • Oakey SHS played host to their local industry partners Boeing Defence Australia (Oakey) and Airbus (Oakey) to discuss how they can work with the school community.   Exciting plans in the works now.  (photo below)

Just announced!!!
Airways Aviation are now offering the Certificate III in Aviation (Ground Operations & Service). 
 
The course will be commencing in 2018 and is being run in a number of ways – a 6 month full time course for recent school leavers, or those wanting a career change; an 18 month part-time course for current students starting Grade 11 in 2018. 
 
Airways is now offering all schools in South East Queensland, who participate in the Gateway School program, the opportunity for their students to complement their existing studies in Aviation with their new Cert III program.  With subject selection time of year, they are ready to work with schools on the options available for them to offer students, Airways is offering this course at all of our Academies – Caloundra, Brisbane, and Coolangatta.

Aerospace Studies has been included in BOTH QUT AND Griffith University's entry bonus scheme!!

With Aerospace Studies now included in QUT and Griffith’s entry bonus scheme, Australian year 12 students who successfully complete Aerospace Studies could earn 2 bonus points if they apply for QUT’s Bachelor of Engineering single and double degrees or Griffith University's Bachelor of Aviation or Aviation Management degrees. Students qualifying for bonus points across a range of subject areas could receive the maximum 8 bonus points.

QTAC arrangements have been put in place in time for the 2017 QTAC opening dates. This is now available for students applying for University entry in 2018.

What's coming up
Drones are changing the World
...and the World of Drones Congress will be presented in Brisbane, Australia, 31 August to 2 September, 2017.
The Congress theme is Driving the drone economy across the Asia Pacific and the program will be presented in four segments:
  • Business and education implementation of drone technology
  • Drones in creative industries, the community and urban spaces
  • The drone industry and regulation
  • Drones and the environment, agriculture, resources and construction industries
Each segment will include keynote & plenary sessions and a choice of specialised concurrent sessions.

2017 Aviation Expo
The AGISP will be having a table at this year's Aviation Expo, being held at Aviation Australia.  Saturday 19 August 2017.  
Come and say hello and meet some of our very own Aerospace schools, teachers and students.

We are again participating in Brisbane Open House on Sat 7 Oct 2017.  The event is open from 10-4 and is made up of terminal tours, historical talks, airside bus tours, food, entertainment and aircraft rides/displays.  The theme is Heritage and the celebration of the 75th anniversary of General Macarthur who established the HQ for the South Pacific platform to protect against the Japanese invasion after Pearl Harbour.

  • Presentations presented for various awards for the day events

The Aerospace GISP Project Manager will be taking a short leave of absence starting Monday 27 November 2017 for approx 8 months.   Recruitment for the role will commence in September 2017.  
Air Force Tech Camp at RAAF Amberley

The UAV Challenge team are pleased to announce that the rules for the 2017 Airborne Delivery Challenge for high-school age students have now been released.   Registrations for the competition are now also open. You can register your high-school age team here via this online form. Finally, the Accelipens are available for borrowing. Check the High-School page for further details.
