Membership Updates

Sacramento Updates
As provided by Tony Rice

As we turn the page on the month of July and head into August, the Legislature has adjourned activity until August 21st.  Having recently completed some major policy objectives, elected officials are back in their districts as Sacramento enjoys a summer recess.  That’s not to say that nothing is being worked on but rather nothing official can be done until the members reconvene.

One of the last items handled before the adjournment was the extension of California’s so-called cap-and-trade program.  This was an important priority to the Governor and legislative leaders, and with the help of a handful of Republicans in the Assembly, passage was secured.  But while the legislation was passed, and recently signed by the Governor, political reverberations are still occurring and could potentially disrupt the leadership of the Assembly Republicans.  We won’t go into all the machinations involved in those efforts, but suffice it to say, the end of session could be even more raucous than usual.

And speaking of everyone’s favorite end of session, if history is any indicator, we will be in for another round of late nights guarding against any type of nefariousness.  We will be sure to contact CAG members directly should legislation of interest crop up at the last minute that might negatively impact the goals of the organization.

Lastly, we are excited to announce that we are working with the CAG Board to provide even better bill tracking and analysis.  We are hopeful to get the framework and infrastructure for the efforts up and running shortly thereby providing even better service for your Sacramento efforts!

Growing The Game

Huge Numbers Take Up Golf In England
England Golf’s strategy to grow the game has inspired over 640,000 people to take up the sport in the last four years and more than 44,000 to join clubs. The growth was notably rapid in 2016/17, with over 237,000 new players and almost 17,000 new members recorded in the year to the end of March. Forty per cent of all new participants are female, highlighting the appetite for the game among women and girls.

The figures are revealed in England Golf’s latest Impact Report, which reviews the success of support for clubs provided by the county network, with the help of national partners.

Sharon Heeley, England Golf’s Head of Delivery, commented: “It’s very pleasing to report these results and we are looking forward to even greater successes in the future.  We now have Club Support Officers in all counties whose role is to listen to and understand the business needs of clubs and help them to achieve their aims.

“Our refreshed strategy to grow the game of golf in England puts the customer at the heart of everything we do and we’re encouraging clubs to take the same approach. We can help them to understand their market and the importance of providing their customers with the golfing experience they want, whether that’s competitive play, social golf, short format golf which fits into busy lifestyles, or the opportunity to meet friends and make new ones.”

Golf's New Stars Help Boost a $70 Billion Industry After Tiger

By: Taylor Cromwell, Bloomberg

When the career of Tiger Woods began to decline in 2009, he took the fortunes of the golf industry down with him.

The sport’s appeal faded among the millennial generation, and the industry found itself with too many greens and not enough players. It hit bottom in the past seven years: Hundreds of courses closed, millions of people left the sport, and bankruptcies rippled through the $70 billion golf world.

Now there are finally signs of an upswing. Apollo Global Management is acquiring country-club operator ClubCorp Holdings Inc. in the industry’s biggest takeover in years. New golf personalities are taking the place of Woods, and the sport is looking to attract younger players with Topgolf entertainment venues and other tactics.
