Summer of Sport


Now all GLL Sport Foundation support has been distributed it's the time that we can look out for all the fantastic achievements that are athletes are doing. There have been some exciting competitions so far this Summer including Wimbledon, the Deaflympics, Muller Anniversary Games, Para Athletics World Championships, Youth Commonwealth Games and many National and Internationals championships across all sports.

The GLL Sport Foundation has supported many athletes competing in these championships and we're very proud to see athletes succeed after their hard work.

EVENTS

London Lions - Free Tickets for Supported Athletes


Our supported athletes can now access tickets to watch the London Lions Basketball Club throughout the 2016/17 season at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. 

The basketball season started in October and continues through until April 2017. London Lions have had a fantastic start to the season and we hope this continues through to next year. Please see the home fixtures

British Athletics have announced the team for the Athletics World Championships taking place in London 4-13th of August. Currently 81 in total, the London 2017 team will be the largest ever to represent British Athletics at a World Championships. On 27th July 2016 Poplar Baths Leisure Centre opened it’s doors to the public for the first time in 30 years. The iconic venue is at the heart of the community in Tower Hamlets and offers swimming, gym, fitness classes, roof top football pitch and Better Coffee Corner. To mark the one year anniversary the centre and community team put on a free open day on 27th July 2017 which allowed members and non members the chance to see the venue and try some of the classes, sports and games. Read more.

The World Transplant Games are unique games which celebrate what is possible in life after transplantation. Put simply, the games are the ‘Olympics’ for transplant recipients. Held every two years, this year the Games were hosted by the city of Malaga, Spain where 1,350 transplant athletes from 52 countries gathered from across the globe. The Games included 13 sports, including track and field, cycling, badminton, tennis, squash and swimming. Read more.

Eden Cheng (GSF supported athlete) won Great Britain’s first gold of the European Junior Diving 2017 with victory in the Group B Platform. The 14-year old looked a star in the making as she swept to gold, finishing 20 points clear of the field on 361.30. Read more.

Mari Durward-Akhurst is a GLL Sport Foundation athlete competing in Para Dressage. Mari attended the Chiltern & South Bucks GSF awards last month and is truly engaged in the programme. Below is her update from Hartpury CPEDI3* International that she sent in to us. “I literally cannot thank everyone enough who supports me. I could not of achieved what I have done over the last week if it wasn’t for you all.” Read more.

July was a very busy month with a lot of success from our supported athletes. It was a difficult decision, but we have chosen Aled Davies and Michael McKillop for their successes at the Para Athletics World Championships last month. Both athletes added to their medal collections winning more golds in London. Read more.
