Georgia Tech AD Stansbury covers a lot of ground in this month's podcast, telling Tech broadcaster Demetra that as a new apparel deal keeps moving forward, the university's overall branding initiative is being led by an ideation team that includes NFL SVP for Marketing Weston as an outside consultant. The process will be comprehensive, covering signage, fonts, wordmarks and uniforms while allowing the university to examine how the logo will represent all that GT encompasses. On the issue of FB scheduling, Stansbury acknowledges that the triple-option makes some non-conference opponents hesitant, but the Yellow Jackets still seeks balance. In addition to its annual game with Georgia, GT likes to schedule another 'Power 5' opponent, one 'Group of 5' foe, and potentially one FCS match-up. This year, the Jackets will play UCG, which Stansbury points out provides exposure in a big market that also has a large alumni base. Listen. (link)
Iowa gets another big gift, this time it's $5M more from the Gerdin family for upgrades to the Hawkeyes learning center that already bears the same name. On the docket are more study rooms, a commons & a cafe. Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Academic Services Tovar: "Our student-athletes have extremely busy lives, and that means they learn and study at all hours... Thanks to support from the Gerdin family, we can continue to provide all student-athletes with a safe and stable environment to achieve academic success." (link)
Temple announces the launch of The 9, a program whereby donors and/or fans, for $50K, can sponsor individual FB uniforms numbered 1-9. Sponsors will be able to interact with the student-athlete throughout the season, receive custom jerseys and be able to travel on the team plane to one road game. Deputy AD Angelos: "This program is made for the 'best of the best.' As our single-digit numbers are earned and limited to our top players, this is limited to our top supporters. It is an exclusive club and these nine numbers will feel special in so many ways." Contributions will support player resources, including mental health and career services, recruiting and facility projects. Three groups of donors have already spoken for numbers 1-3. (link)
Furman will make use of a $1M contribution by an anonymous donor to create the Bobby Johnson Head Football Coaching Endowment. Johnson, a current College Football Playoff committee member, led the Paladins to 60-36 (41-23) marks in eight seasons as HC, which included a trip to the FCS National Championship game in 2001.  (link)
SportsBusiness Journal's latest edition includes in-depth coverage of beer's growing influence at collegiate sporting events. FishBait Marketing's Jones: "Ultimately, and I mean sooner than later, the vast majority of schools will sell beer in their concessions. TV money and a lot of the other collegiate revenues are flat. Schools are looking for new revenue and [beer at concession stands] will be a significant new giant income stream." Madden Communications EVP McTavish does the math, "You buy a keg for $75 and sell it for $1,400." IMG College EVP Judelson: "What was a second-tier category for us is now a top-10 category." Lots more, including some state legislators who oppose the addition, schools adding beer-related majors given the surge in the craft marketplace & the touchy aspects of beer sponsorships. (link); In an interesting supplement, SBJ's Lefton & Smith note the rapidly increasing rate at which beer brands are buying up TV advertising around college FB broadcasts. In 2015 the total investment in such inventory by beer companies was $15.7M, last year the figure surged to $32.6M. Coors Light & Bud Light lead the way. (link); Michael Smith also penned on the competition for executive search assignments in college athletics as Collegiate Sports Associates' Turner notes the increase of firms due to compensation going sharply north. Turnkey's Perna outlines some differences in searches on the college side versus those his firm does in the pro ranks. "There’s a much brighter light on the college searches." More. (link)
Florida State takes it website to WMT as Noles AD Wilcox remarks, "Seminoles.com is an important tool to engage with our supporters and we feel that WMT best aligns with our strategic vision and where we are going as a program." Of note: Endless scroll, data-driven, mobile-centric. Asst. AD for Sports Information & Digital Media Finebloom: "To work with a company that has the ability to narrowly focus on its select client base and be responsive to our needs on an immediate basis is exciting. WMT is truly a leader in this space when it comes to technology, customer service and innovation. This is the next step in the evolution of our digital presence." (link)
Arizona State agrees to a multi-year partnership with Ticketmaster. As part of the agreement, ASU will utilize Ticketmaster's suite of offerings, which includes consumer-facing ticket sales solutions, venue management software, sales monitoring and multi-channel marketing. Sun Devils AD Anderson: "As the most innovative university in the country, we strive to be pioneers in all aspects of our athletic department. Our new partnership with Ticketmaster exemplifies that vision, as we recognize the seamless and advanced experience Ticketmaster provides to our fans when it comes to purchasing tickets to our events." (link)
Troy released its annual review, highlighted by five teams in postseason play, three teams with the highest GPA in the Sun Belt Conference and an overall 3.0 GPA for the department, the No. 24-rated MBB/FB combo according to College Football News and the only school to win its MBB and WBB Conference Tourneys and a FB bowl game last year. Also in 2016-17: Shovels hit the dirt for the $24M North End Zone Football Facility, expanded ESPN3 coverage, and an increase of 29% in licensing royalties year over year which pushed the Trojans past the $1M mark in merchandise sales for the first time. Within the context of the dismissal of USC FB student-athlete Boermeester, Outkick the Coverage's Travis examines what he characterizes as internal flaws within the Title IX investigative process, especially when it comes to assault. First, Travis makes the point that universities are both ill-equipped for and inefficient at conducting assault investigations, noting that campus police do not have the required resources to carry out such time-consuming and complex processes. In the event that criminal charges are not brought, Travis uses the Boermeester case to point out the flaws in a campus investigation, which is required to take place under Title IX. Boermeester's girlfriend, the alleged victim, has repeatedly denied any assault on Boermeester's part and says: "When I told the truth about Matt, in repeated interrogations, I was stereotyped and was told I must be a ‘battered’ woman, and that made me feel demeaned and absurdly profiled. I understand that domestic violence is a terrible problem, but in no way does that apply to Matt and me." (link)
Harvard Business Review contributors Dattner and Wood explain that employees who don't live up to expected potential need not be let go and that managers may be better served to instead consider alternate paths more compatible with the employee's talents. Three possible solutions to consider when coaching an employee has revealed that he or she is not best suited for a particular role include moving the individual to a different role, redefining the role as it exists or rethinking the organizational chart. Dattner and Wood cite one example in which a CFO, upon realizing that her strengths lay outside of managing a globally dispersed finance team, successfully suggested to her boss that creating a chief of staff position for one of her direct reports, who did excel in such areas, would better serve the organization. "It may seem risky to change an existing role, build a new role around an individual’s preferences and strengths, or to rethink organizational structure, but it can be well worth it to set your most knowledgeable and talented high performers up for sustained success."  (link)

The International Olympic Committee has named Paris as the host city for the 2024 Olympics while Los Angeles will host in 2028. LA officials estimate it will cost $5.3B to host the games and say the city will be able to cover costs through sponsorships and ticket sales. The IOC predicts it will contribute $1.7B of broadcast and sponsorship revenues to the Paris games while LA could receive at least $2B. LA will also have more flexibility in selling domestic sponsorships in categories yet unclaimed by IOC international corporate partners. Meanwhile, the IOC has agreed to pay the city $180M immediately to cover the cost of keeping the organizing committee running for an additional four years and contributing as much as $160M to youth sports. In addition, if the Games come in under budget, the city will be able to keep the lion's share of $487.6M set aside to offset any cost overages. LA Mayor Garcetti: "I can look people in the eye and say this is a much stronger deal financially." (link)

Ole Miss AD Bjork & Kansas State boss Taylor discussed the dynamics of hiring a Deputy AD in an AthleticDirectorU interview moderated by Ventura Partners' Chatlos. The conversation is an interesting one on a number of levels, not least of which is the fact that both leaders were in the market for a #2 at the time of the recording at the 2017 NACDA Convention. Plus, both have strong bodies of work that include time themselves as a Deputy AD. Trust, versatility & already thinking like an AD are key traits the duo identify as necessary in a quality Deputy. Lots more. (link)

Van Wagner continues its run of new deals with Samford. The agreement calls for Van Wagner to oversee all aspects under the broad umbrella "Samford Athletics Sponsorships," which includes enhancing the game day experience and creating unique opportunities for sponsors. AD Newton: "As we continue to look for ways to grow our athletics department in alignment with the university's mission, Mike Palisi and his team at VWSE made perfect sense. They have years of experience in multimedia rights, are of the highest character, and will allow us to look for new and creative ways to increase revenue and engage our campus and community." (link)
An enhanced multi-year partnership designates Safeway/Albertsons the Official Grocer of Oregon State Athletics for the 2017-2018 academic year. AD Barnes: "We're excited to enter into this partnership with a corporate sponsor possessing unique Pacific Northwest origins that our fans have come to trust. Safeway/Albertsons' commitment to excellence aligns with the goals the young men and women who represent Beaver Nation on the fields and courts of play strive for every day. In addition, this strategic partnership will enhance the fan experience for Beaver Nation throughout the week and into game day." (link)
In a statement, Adidas acknowledges that removing a female official during last week's Summer Championships at the behest of LaVar Ball was the "wrong decision," adding: "We regret the situation and are looking into the matter to make sure our standards for sportsmanship, equality and fair play are met in the future. ... We believe in the power of sport to create positivity and bring people together. Importantly, any representation that we would compromise our values and inclusive approach for the benefit of any individual is inaccurate." (link); Speaking of Ball, ESPN analyst Bilas has had enough. Following last week's on-court behavior and his decision to tell female Fox Sports 1 reporter who criticized Big Baller Brand for not selling women's apparel to "stay in your lane," Bilas tweeted: "LaVar Ball has shown himself to be a misogynistic buffoon that is unworthy of our time and attention. I'm done." (link)
Latest from Law360 on the Pepperdine WBB trial, "A federal judge Monday interrupted a California trial over two female basketball players' claims Pepperdine University discriminated against them for dating, asking a witness who testified coaches were concerned dating drama would spill onto the court why that meant “getting into the dynamics of that relationship.” More behind the site's wall. (link)

The Twitter feed of Yahoo's Forde has the latest in the Ole Miss situation, "Houston Nutt atty Tom Mars says Ole Miss tells him phones Hugh Freeze used were paid for by school's Athletic Foundation, not school itself. Mars: Phone arrangement through Foundation was a departure from Nutt's tenure. Why would school would create/allow that arrangement? Mars requested phone records from entire Freeze OM tenure. School says it will cost 25 grand to produce records, citing time for redactions. More Mars: "If you're asking whether coach Nutt would dismiss his lawsuit if OleMiss would apologize w/o offering reasonable compensation for what coach Freeze did to him the answer would be NO." Mars on problems stemming from lack of OM apology: "Inherent in the freedom we have to make wise decisions is the freedom to make bad ones." (link)
UCF kicker De La Haye was ruled ineligible after he chose not to accept the conditions of an NCAA waiver that would allow him to maintain his eligibility and monetize YouTube videos as long as they did not reference his status as a student-athlete or depict his football skills. According to the terms of the waiver, granted July 14, De La Haye would only be allowed to reference his status as a student-athlete on non-monetized accounts. (link); NCAA statement: "Contrary to misperceptions, making a YouTube video-- and even making money off of it-- is not a violation of an NCAA rule." (link)

Discovery Communications will buy Scripps in a $14.6B cash-and-stock transaction. Discovery will now own approximately 20% of cable viewership and five of the top pay-TV networks targeting female audiences. "The acquisition of Scripps' lifestyle properties, like Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel, add heft to Discovery's similarly lifestyle/adventure-based portfolio that they could leverage to develop their own non-sports skinny bundle." TCU AD Chris Del Conte chats with 1.Q contributing host Tai Brown on fitting the mold of an executive, dressing for the job you want, but at the same time being true to yourself. Del Conte admits there was a point in his career he tried to operate according to a stereotype & as a byproduct negativity impacting his performance. Further, Del Conte notes a number of peers he's learned from - like Northwestern's Phillips & Alabama's Byrne - and how he translates their strengths to his own style. Bottom line: Del Conte says ADs have so many responsibilities, feeling comfortable in their own skin is paramount. More. Listen by clicking the link. (link) (8:45)
